C20 Just Do What You like
A video was playing on the phone, showing a bustling tofu stand crowded with people. A woman with a pleasant face skillfully managed the stall. The scene was lively, and though the video was a bit blurry and noisy, it was clear the woman was Xue Ning.
In less than a minute, the video shot to fame in the food category, with viewers affectionately dubbing her the "Tofu Belle." Xue Ning watched the video, her mouth twitching slightly. She just wanted to make a living, who knew she'd become famous? It was like planting a willow and getting a whole grove.
As the video's popularity soared, people lamented that they were too late to taste her tofu. Xue Ning was unfazed, confident in her culinary skills. Her mentor always said she had a natural talent, and making delicious food was second nature to her.
"Host, are you really that proud over something as ordinary as tofu?" The voice in her head was quick to dampen her spirits.
"021, would it kill you to give me a compliment?" she retorted.
After a moment of silence, the mechanical voice returned, "This system believes in being factual."
That system sure had a knack for taking her down a peg. Wasn't she allowed to feel a little smug?
Xue Ning couldn't be bothered to argue with the system. Her real challenge was Lu Bai, sitting nearby, whose curious gaze never left Xue Ya.
In her past life, she had been tormented by Lu Bai, leaving deep emotional scars. Now, under his intense gaze, her body tensed, and her heart pounded like a drum.
"What’s the big deal? It's just a video. My cooking skills deserve this kind of attention," Xue Ya insisted, trying to sound confident.
As soon as she spoke, the atmosphere in the car seemed to drop. The man across from her asked slowly, "When did you learn to cook?"
His tone was deep, each word cutting into Xue Ya like a knife, sending chills through her. Lu Bai was not someone easily fooled; he knew her too well. But she couldn't let him see through her.
Xue Ya averted her eyes. "You were often not home, so after marrying into your family, I decided to teach myself."
She tried to appear indifferent, striving to act naturally.
To Lu Bai, her words were ironic. Ever since she married him, she had been pestering him about the Xue family’s finances. Even if she did learn to cook, it was probably just to win him over.
"Showing off your skills, aren't you just trying to get my attention?" he mocked. No matter what Xue Ning did, it only fueled his growing resentment towards her.
Xue Ning was not pleased by his words. In her short life, she saw no future for herself; only cooking brought her warmth and solace.
"Why does everything with Lu Bai turn into a game of winning his favor?" Xue Ning turned around, her eyes defiant. "Sorry to disappoint you, but I learned this because I love it, not for anyone else."
"Lu Bai, do you really think I used to revolve around you every day just for your sake? You're mistaken!" Xue Ning's voice was firm, fiercely protecting her inner sanctum without a second thought.
Her reaction genuinely surprised Lu Bai. What gave her the nerve to speak to him like this? No matter how Xue Ning explained, Lu Bai refused to believe her. He saw her as someone who spun tales, with not a single word worth trusting. To him, her current behavior was just a ploy to grab his attention.
"Hah, full of lies. Do you really think I'd believe you?"
