Defense Arts involved teaching the nobles skills on self-defense and combat. For their practicum, they were tasked to pair up and fight, applying their lessons on swordsmanship and at the same time beating their opponents with their martial arts. It didn't only become a showcase of strength among nobles but an assertion of their status.
