C18 Chapter 17 – The First Furnace
The morning began with the sound of waves crashing gently against the shore.
Aiden woke before sunrise, as he had every day since arriving on the island.
His body had changed.
The first morning, even carrying a few logs had exhausted him.
Now, lifting bundles of wood and stone felt almost natural.
He stepped outside and looked around his camp.
The wheat field was growing steadily.
The workbench stood beside the hut.
The storage box kept everything organized.
The camp no longer looked like a temporary shelter.
It looked like the beginning of a home.
After watering the wheat and eating a simple breakfast of roasted rabbit meat and berries, Aiden checked his tools.
The Stone Axe still had plenty of durability.
The Stone Pickaxe needed a little repair.
He fixed the loose binding with fresh plant fiber before setting off.
Today's goal was clear.
"I need a furnace."
Without one, the Iron Ore he had collected was nothing more than heavy rocks.
---
Aiden walked to the small clay deposit he had discovered beneath the workbench.
Using a wooden shovel he had crafted the previous evening, he carefully dug out several more lumps of clay.
Unlike stone, clay had to be handled gently.
Too much force broke it apart.
Too little left it stuck in the ground.
After filling a woven basket, he carried it back to camp.
The next material was stone.
Lots of it.
The furnace blueprint required nearly thirty medium-sized stones.
By midday, sweat covered his clothes.
His shoulders ached.
Even with improved Strength, carrying heavy stones back and forth was exhausting.
When he finally stacked the last stone beside the workbench, the System quietly updated.
Woodcutter Profession EXP +8
Builder Profession EXP +12
Aiden smiled.
"So professions level through real work."
That made perfect sense.
---
He opened the blueprint.

---
A blue outline appeared beside the workbench.
This time, it was much larger than any structure he had built before.
The circular stone walls had to be perfectly balanced.
The inside needed a hollow chamber for fire.
Small air vents were placed near the bottom.
"It's more complicated than I expected."
For the next three hours, Aiden worked patiently.
He mixed clay with water until it became thick and sticky.
He pressed it between every stone like natural cement.
Several times, part of the wall collapsed.
Instead of getting frustrated, he simply rebuilt it.
"The stronger the foundation..."
"The longer it will last."
As the afternoon sun began to sink lower, he placed the final stone at the top.
The furnace stood almost as tall as his chest.
Simple.
Rough.
But solid.
A soft blue light covered the structure.

Aiden gently touched the warm stone wall.
He couldn't hide his excitement.
"This changes everything."
For the first time, he could enter the age of metal.
---
He immediately placed several pieces of dry wood inside the furnace.
Using flint and steel-colored stones, he carefully lit the fire.
The flames slowly grew stronger.
When the inside glowed orange, he placed three pieces of Iron Ore into a clay bowl and slid them inside.
Then...
He waited.
Smelting wasn't instant.
Minutes passed.
The fire had to remain hot.
Several times, he added more wood.
Nearly an hour later...
The System chimed.
Smelting Complete
Items Obtained:
- Iron Ingot ×2
- Iron Slag ×1
Aiden picked up one of the ingots using two sticks.
It was still warm.
The smooth gray metal reflected the firelight.
His eyes filled with excitement.
"My first metal."
The journey from rough stone to refined iron had taken days.
That made the moment feel earned.
---
Just then, another notification appeared.
Builder Profession Level Up!
Beginner Lv.2
New Passive Effect Unlocked:
Steady Hands
Effect:
Small increase in construction accuracy.
Reduced chance of crafting mistakes.
Aiden nodded.
"So professions grow with me."
He preferred this much more than receiving random rewards.
---
As evening approached, he placed several unfinished clay bowls inside the furnace to harden them.
When they came out later, they felt much stronger than before.
One by one, his primitive tools were improving.
The camp itself was evolving.
Not because of luck.
Because of knowledge.
---
Night slowly covered the island.
After dinner, Aiden sat beside the furnace.
The warm stone continued to radiate heat long after the fire had faded.
He opened his journal.
Survival Journal – Day 13
- A strong foundation supports everything built above it.
- Metal begins with patience, not strength.
- Every profession improves through practice.
- Fire can create as well as destroy.
- Today's furnace will shape tomorrow's civilization.
He closed the journal.
The stars glittered above the island.
Far beyond the ocean...
A golden beam of light suddenly rose into the sky.
A System announcement echoed across the world.
[Global Announcement]
The first player has successfully entered the Bronze Age.
World Age Progress: 2%
Aiden quietly watched the fading light.
"So someone is already ahead..."
He smiled and looked at the glowing furnace beside him.
"That's fine."
"I'll build my future... one step at a time."
