C19 Chapter 18 – The Blacksmith's Path
The first light of dawn reflected from the surface of the stone furnace.
The fire inside had gone out during the night, but the furnace still felt slightly warm.
Aiden stepped outside his hut and took a deep breath.
The cool morning air filled his lungs.
As usual, he began his day by checking the wheat field.
The green stalks had grown taller.
Small drops of dew rested on the leaves.
He removed a few weeds, watered the soil, and nodded with satisfaction.
"Another few days..."
"Then my first harvest."
Unlike before, he no longer expected instant results.
Everything on the island had its own pace.
And that pace rewarded patience.

After breakfast, Aiden placed the two Iron Ingots on the workbench.
Their dull gray surface reflected the morning sunlight.
He gently touched one.
It was smooth.

Heavy.

Crafting a pickaxe.
Building the furnace.
Smelting it.
Every step had required effort.

He studied each one carefully.
The Iron Hammer would require more materials than he currently had.
The Iron Chisel wasn't useful yet.
The Iron Knife...
That seemed perfect.
"It will help with hunting, cooking, and crafting."
He selected the blueprint.

Even so, Aiden didn't rush.
He reheated the iron until it glowed a dark orange.
Using a smooth stone as an anvil, he struck it with his Wooden Hammer.

The sound echoed across the camp.
He hit it again.
And again.
Each strike slowly flattened the metal.
The work was harder than he expected.
His arms quickly became tired.
The iron cooled faster than he could shape it.
He had to place it back into the furnace several times.
Nearly an hour passed before the rough blade finally took shape.
It wasn't beautiful.
One side was slightly thicker than the other.
But it looked like a knife.
He attached the wooden handle using plant fiber and tested the grip.
It felt firm.
Comfortable.
