C23 Chapter 23
Jules was hustled out of the safe house, Detective Thompson and Emily flanking her. They sped through the night, switching cars twice, losing any potential tail. Finally, they arrived at a new, heavily fortified safe house. Jules was shaken but coherent, her mind racing with the killer's words.
Detective Thompson's team had meanwhile been working on tracing the call. Emily burst into the room, a mix of determination and worry on her face. "We got something. The call came from an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town. We've got a team heading there now."
Jules stood up, resolve hardening in her eyes. "I want to be there when they search the warehouse."
Emily's face fell, her eyes darting between Jules and Detective Thompson. "Jules, I don't think that's a good idea. It's too risky."
Jules' expression didn't waver. "I need to do this, Emily. I need to face him."
Detective Thompson intervened, his voice firm. "Emily's right, Jules. You're staying here, where it's safe."
Jules' frustration boiled over. "Safe? He's already got a message to me, Detective. I'm not hiding anymore."
Emily's voice was firm, her eyes welling up with concern. "Jules, my decision is final. Your safety is the most important thing to me. You're not going to the warehouse."
Jules' face fell, a mix of frustration and desperation flashing in her eyes. She nodded, pretending to agree, but her mind was already racing with a plan.
As Emily turned to brief Detective Thompson on the next steps, Jules slipped out of the room, grabbing a hoodie and slipping out into the night. The streets were dark, the shadows swallowing her whole.
Emily realized Jules was gone, panic setting in. "Detective! She's gone!"
Detective Thompson's face was grim. "Get a team on her. Now."
As Jules walked through the dark streets, the shadows seemed to move with her. She kept her head down, her eyes scanning the alleys and corners. She knew she was being watched.
Suddenly, a figure emerged from the darkness ahead. Jules' heart skipped a beat, but it was just a homeless man, huddling in a doorway.
Jules breathed a sigh of relief and kept moving. But as she passed a particularly dark alley, she felt a presence behind her. She spun around, but there was no one.
A faint whisper echoed in her ear, "Welcome, Jules."
A shadow detached itself from the wall, and a figure stepped forward. The streetlamp caught his face, and Jules' blood ran cold. It was Alex, her supposed dead friend from university.
A sinister smile spread across Alex's face. "I've been waiting, Jules. You're just in time for the show."
Alex lunged forward, covering Jules' mouth with a white cloth. She struggled, but the chloroform was too strong. As the world went dark, Jules saw Alex's smile twist into a cruel grin...
And everything went black.
