C17 You Are the Most Important Person to be Happy

Mrs. Lu did not look surprised. "You'll meet others you like who like you too. I've seen you very sad in this marriage, Yao Yao. To me, your happiness is most important. I understand your decision."

Lu Yao choked on a sob and nodded.

"Shao Yunchen will probably try to come here, but I don't want to see him. Could you please give him the divorce papers and ask him to sign them?"

"I will."

Lu Yao called Xiang Dongnan to ask him if she could stay at his place for some time. Xiang Dongnan readily agreed and told her to get the house keys from his office. Lu Yao soon left her mother's house with Tian Tian by her side.

The next afternoon, Shao Yunchen left Jin City in a hurry. He drove to Mrs. Lu's house directly from the airport.

He rang the bell a few times before Mrs. Lu finally opened the door. She looked at him with an indifferent expression on her face. "Is something the matter?"

"Mother, is Yao Yao here?" Shao Yunchen asked softly. Frustration was eating him up on the inside.

When he returned to the company yesterday, he found that Lu Yao was Ying Xin Corporation's negotiator. She left her ring in his office and took off in a hurry. He called her and she again said that she wanted a divorce. She was adamant on it.

He had been held back by several conferences since then and could not return to the city until this afternoon.

"She isn't here, but she left something behind for you."

Mrs. Lu turned and went back into the house. Shao Yunchen took the opportunity to peep inside, hoping that he would catch Lu Yao inside, but she was not there.

Mrs. Lu returned with a document in her hands which she handed to Shao Yunchen.

When he saw the title on the papers, his eyes flashed in anger and he raised his voice. "Mother! I don't want to divorce Yao Yao."

"But she wants to divorce you," Mrs. mother said calmly. "Shao Yunchen, my family has never treated you unfairly. Yao Yao has always been kind to you. But you two can't be together. These three years have proven that. There's nothing you can do about it now."

"I was busy with work, and I told her earlier that—"

"You were busy with work?" Mrs. Lu interrupted him at once. "Shao Yunchen, do you love my daughter? Should she not be more important than your work?"

Shao Yunchen stood silently, averting his eyes.

Seeing this, Mrs. Lu continued in a cold tone, "Shao Yunchen, my daughter is like any other woman, after all. She wants to have children. She is not getting any younger. If you have any conscience, just let her go."

Mrs. Lu closed Shao Yunchen's fingers around the divorce papers and shut the door in his face.

Shao Yunchen stood outside the door, frozen, divorce papers in hand.

Didn't he tell Lu Yao that they would discuss the matter of divorce when he returned from abroad?

How could she decide that she always had the last word?

Shao Yunchen was getting more and more distressed, although he could not pinpoint exactly why he was so upset about the divorce. He thought of where Lu Yao worked and drove there, only to find out that she had applied for leave. She had not mentioned a duration. It was as if she was deliberately absenting herself until he signed the divorce papers.

Shao Yunchen was furious and tore the divorce paper into pieces once again.

They got married because she wanted it in spite of his reluctance, and now she insisted that he sign the divorce papers. Did she ever ask for his opinion?

He should find her and ask her why she never bothered.

Lu Yao spent her off days staying at Xiang Dongnan's house with Tian Tian. She did not step out unless it was for something urgent.

Her mother called, saying that Shao Yunchen came back from Jin City the day after she left, looking for her. He even went to her office.

Before they got married, she and Shao Yunchen were poles apart. Their paths were like two parallel lines, never meeting. After marriage, they only met once a week. Now that they were about to be divorced, he was looking for her everywhere. It was truly ironic.

"Mom, don't open the door for him if he comes again," Lu Yao said. Later that day, she went to the hospital to take an appointment for her abortion.

If she could not give her child a proper home, she would rather not give birth at all.

Lu Yao then contacted her lawyer. She needed to see her father in prison.

After a long time of waiting, Lu Yao saw her father come into the visiting room, escorted by two guards.

Her father did not seem to be doing well these past few months. His hair was already half white and his back was slightly hunched. When he saw Lu Yao, his eyes turned downward in guilt.

Lu Yao's eyes were a little sore from crying. She gestured to the phone and waited until her father picked it up before saying, "I brought you something. I'll have someone bring it to you later. The verdict is out. "

Her father clutched the phone tighter, unsure of what to say. "Yao Yao, I'm sorry."
