The contractors had finished—construction, cleaning, plumbing, electrical. It was time. Tally had done a walk-through first to check the work, traversing the floors in a strange, gray haze. The basement at the main house had been gutted. No trace remained of the former rooms, spaces that could only hold memories of violence and anguish for all of them.
