C15 An Unfamiliar City

After finally receiving permission from Ho Li to leave the company, Tang Xin headed home for a shower. The marks on her body were too conspicuous, prompting her to don a high-collared T-shirt despite the summer heat.

By the time she reached the hospital, it was evening. She made her way directly to Ling Yue's ward.

Ling Yue had only just fallen asleep, having long forgotten his previous encounters with Tang Xin. His realization that he was in a hospital had earlier sparked a tantrum, and he had passed out from sheer exhaustion.

The ward, arranged by Ho Li, was outfitted with the utmost care. Upon seeing Tang Xin, the nurse tactfully exited, leaving her alone with Ling Yue.

Next to the bed, a small cabinet held freshly washed fruit, and it was stocked with an abundance of nutritional supplements. Ling Yue's wounds were well-tended, his defined features now visible. Despite his rebellious demeanor, he appeared to be nothing more than a resolute young man.

Shortly after Tang Xin sat down, Ling Yue awoke.

His initial surge of emotion subsided at the sight of her. "Why are you here?" he asked.

"I'm the one who brought you here," Tang Xin replied succinctly. "I've settled the debt you owed, but it's a one-time deal. If something like this happens again, even if you're dying in front of me, I won't help you."

She didn't disclose how she had managed to acquire the money. Ling Yue, taken aback, had to admit that he hadn't treated Tang Xin well. Although he had indeed rescued her, his motives were selfish; he had been captivated by her beauty, thinking he could profit from it, which led him to send her to a nightclub as soon as she was well.

Realizing the difficulty Tang Xin must have faced in raising such a sum, Ling Yue was filled with a mix of shame and gratitude. He earnestly promised, "From now on, I'll work hard. I'll pay you back."

Tang Xin had never expected Ling Yue to repay the money, but his commitment to work hard reassured her that her sacrifice was justified.

"Then..." Tang Xin began tentatively, "Do you know anything about my family background?"

Tang Xin had lost her memory, leaving her completely in the dark about her past life. She had no idea where her family might be or if she even had one. This uncertainty filled her with panic. She would have been grateful for even the smallest clue about herself.

"I actually don't know anything about your past," Ling Yue confessed, his head bowed in embarrassment. His initial intention had been to find another way to make money, so he had simply rescued Tang Xin without much thought, not even bothering to take a photo at the scene of her accident.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure to investigate your background for you in the future."

Tang Xin nodded in appreciation. "I appreciate your concern."

But was it really such a concern? Tang Xin had already done so much for him without a word of complaint, and all he had done was make a simple inquiry about her past. It hardly seemed like a bother. The more he reflected on it, the more remorseful he felt. He resolved to treat Tang Xin with the utmost care from that moment on, vowing never to let her endure any hardship.

After ensuring Ling Yue had his dinner, Tang Xin headed home. She had her own work to attend to, and with the hospital staff on hand, there was no need for her to stay.

Ho Li had demanded toughness from her, and after standing for so long, her legs felt weak. She decided it was best to head home quickly to avoid raising Ling Yue's suspicions.

Instead of taking a taxi, Tang Xin chose to walk. She strolled along the streets for a long time, taking in the novelty of it all. The city, with its unfamiliar faces and places, was all new to her.
