C101 Storm Or Silence

When I reached the restaurant, Laura was not there yet. I stood near the entrance for a moment, unsure of what to do with my thoughts while waiting. My mind was still heavy from everything I had told Alicia and Chris earlier. The words Josh had spoken to me kept replaying in my head like a broken record.

To calm myself, I walked to the counter and bought a glass of juice. I held it tightly in my hand, not even drinking it properly just trying to steady myself. A few minutes later, I saw Laura arriving. She looked around and then spotted me sitting near the window. Her expression softened immediately, but also carried confusion. "You’re so early,” she said as she sat down.

I nodded slowly. “I needed to see you… because we have a big problem.” Her smile faded instantly. “Mike… what happened?” I took a deep breath and started explaining everything. I told her about Josh, her father, and the conversation I had with him at the office. I didn’t hide anything. I even repeated his exact words the choice he had given me.

As I spoke, I expected anger. I expected her to be shocked, maybe even upset with me for putting her in the middle of something so complicated. But instead… Laura lowered her gaze. When I finished, she looked up at me with worried eyes. “So what do we do?” she asked softly. “I don’t want a breakup… I love you.” Those words hit me harder than anything else that day.

I reached across the table and held her hand. “I love you too,” I said quietly. “That’s the problem… I can’t just let you go either.” For a moment, neither of us spoke. The noise of the restaurant around us faded into the background as if the world had paused just for that conversation.

Then Laura squeezed my hand tighter. “Then we don’t break up,” she said firmly, even though her voice trembled slightly. “We face it together.” I nodded. “If storms come… we’ll be ready.” She gave a small, determined smile. “Together.” For the first time that day, something inside me eased. Not fully… But enough to breathe again.

When I got home later that evening, it was already late. As soon as I stepped inside, I could feel it my parents had been waiting. My mother, Mary, was the first to speak. “Son… are you alright? You don’t look well.” My father, Quinton, folded his arms, studying me carefully. “What did your team manager say?” he asked calmly. “I know that look. He must have said something serious.”

I hesitated for a moment, then sighed. I sat down. “Mom… Dad…” “He gave me a choice.” Both of them became quiet immediately. I continued. “He told me I should break up with Laura and stay on his good side at work… or continue dating her and face him as my enemy at work.” My mother’s face changed instantly. “So he is threatening your position?” she asked sharply.

I nodded slowly. “He’s my boss… and if things get difficult, it could affect everything I’ve worked for.” Silence filled the room. My father exhaled slowly. “And what do you plan on doing?” he asked. I looked down for a moment, then lifted my head. “Laura and I met this afternoon,” I said. “We decided we’re not breaking up. If storms come… we’ll face them together.”

My mother’s expression softened, but I could still see worry in her eyes. Quinton nodded slightly, but didn’t say anything immediately. The tension remained in the room like a heavy cloud.

At the Chambers household, the evening was just as tense but in a different way. Chris had just arrived home. Valeria and David were already waiting for him at the dining table. Valeria was the first to speak. “You’re late again,” she said, though her voice wasn’t angry. “Where were you?” Chris sat down slowly. “I was with Mike,” he said.

David raised an eyebrow. “With Mike? What happened?” Chris sighed. “It’s complicated.” He explained everything he knew Josh’s reaction, Mike’s situation, and the pressure he was now under because of Laura. Valeria’s expression turned serious. “So Mike is in trouble because of a relationship?” she asked. Chris nodded. “And Josh is not just his manager… he’s also Laura’s father.”

David leaned back in his chair. “That makes things worse,” he muttered. Valeria folded her arms. “But Mike is not the type to give up easily,” she said quietly. “Is he?” Chris shook his head. “No. He’s fighting it… but I can see it’s affecting him badly.” David sighed. “This is not just office politics anymore,” he said. “It’s personal.” Chris didn’t respond. Instead, he stared at the table, thinking about everything.

For the first time, he realized how fragile things had become for all of them. Mike was struggling. He was hiding it behind calm words… But Chris had seen his eyes. Something was breaking inside him.

Meanwhile, at the Mooney residence, Alicia had just returned home. Everyone was already there Mark, Peter, and Georgia sitting in the living room waiting for her. As soon as she stepped in, she spoke without hesitation. “Dad… Grandpa… Grandma… I’ve made my decision.”

All eyes turned toward her. “I agree to become the director,” she said clearly. A small smile appeared on Peter’s face, and Georgia looked relieved. But Alicia raised her hand. “However… I will only take the position after three months. I still want to work as a Special Analyst and learn more.” Mark nodded slowly. “That is reasonable,” he said. But Alicia wasn’t finished yet. “There’s a condition.”

The room immediately went silent. Peter frowned slightly. “A condition?” Alicia took a breath. “Things are not looking good for Mike right now. If things get worse and he loses his job… I want the authority to hire him into Lucia Goods after I take over.” That statement changed the atmosphere instantly. Mark’s expression turned serious. “So you are agreeing to all this because of your concern for him?” he asked.

Alicia shook her head quickly. “No, Dad.” “I already decided last night.” “I just didn’t have the chance to say it properly this morning.” "You were not here remember." She paused. “This condition came later.” “But I’m not ready to explain everything yet.” Peter leaned back in his chair, studying her carefully. “And if we disagree?” he asked. Alicia looked at him directly. “Then I will still accept the position… but I will also still stand by that condition.” Silence followed again.

Then Georgia finally spoke gently. “My child… being a director means you make the decisions. Not us.” “If by that time you believe helping him is right… then you will do it.” Alicia’s eyes softened immediately. “Thank you, Grandma.” A weight lifted from her shoulders. She bowed slightly and then turned toward her room.

Before sleeping, she opened her phone sent a message in the group chat "Brother, how are you doing? You left early today… is everything alright?" A few minutes later, my reply came. "Everything is fine. If storms come… I will fight them. Don’t worry." Alicia stared at the message for a long time. Then she smiled softly. “Stubborn as always,” she whispered. She put her phone down. And finally, she allowed herself to rest.

And somewhere in the silence of the night… Three different hearts lay awake under the same storm. But none of them were willing to give up.
