C184 Tears Behind Closed Doors
Sarah remained silent. "I told him to find another woman... I was the one who pushed him away." She lowered her head. "But when I actually saw another woman standing beside him... my heart hurt." Sarah sighed softly. "You have developed feelings for him?" Samantha answered honestly. "I don't feel anything for him." She paused. "But I am scared." Sarah looked at her. "Scared of what?"
Samantha forced a smile. "I'm afraid that Monica and I will become unnecessary." She continued quietly, "What if Ben brings that woman home?" "What if Father and Mother accept her?" "What if Monica loses everything because Ben has another family?" "What if... one day... Monica asks me why I couldn't keep her father?" Her voice broke again. Sarah's own eyes became moist. Sarah hesitated for a moment before asking the question that had been weighing on her heart. "Sister... have you finally moved on from Mike?"
Samantha froze. The smile on her face disappeared, and she slowly looked away, avoiding Sarah's gaze. A long silence filled the office before she finally spoke in a trembling voice. "To be honest... I've tried. Every single night I tell myself that I should forget him, that my life has already changed and I should accept reality. But no matter how hard I try, it's much harder than I ever imagined. Mike is the only man I have ever truly loved. I gave him my whole heart without holding anything back.
She wiped her tears. "Then, overnight, everything changed. My fate was rewritten, and I ended up marrying the very man who destroyed everything between us. Sometimes I wonder what my life would have been like if none of this had happened." Tears slowly streamed down her cheeks. "I keep telling myself to let go, but my heart still remembers him, and that is what hurts the most." Sarah understood that pain better than anyone. Her own future had been changed because of Ben's selfish actions.
She had lost her freedom. She had hidden her pregnancy. She had rushed into marriage. Although she loved Chris now, the beginning of their relationship had never been their choice. Thinking about everything, tears slowly rolled down Sarah's cheeks as well. She hugged Samantha even tighter. "Sister..." "No matter what happens..." "You will never lose me." Samantha looked at her sister-in-law. "...Really?" Sarah nodded firmly. "Even if the whole world changes..." "You are still my sister." The two sisters cried together quietly inside the Director's office.
Chris's office was opposite Sarah's office. While reviewing a document, he suddenly heard faint sobbing coming from the corridor. He slowly stood up. "...Sarah?" Without thinking, he walked outside. The crying became clearer as he approached the Director's office. He stopped outside the door. He could hear voices. Although he couldn't understand what they were saying, he could clearly hear Sarah crying.
His heart tightened. "Wife..." He instinctively wanted to knock. His hand even reached the doorknob. But after thinking for a few seconds, he slowly lowered it. "If she wanted me inside..." "She would have called me." He remained standing there for another minute before quietly turning around. As he walked back to his office, countless thoughts crossed his mind. "Did something happen at home?" "Did Father-in-law say something?" "Did someone bully her?" "Or..." "...is she regretting marrying me?"
That final thought made him stop walking. He shook his head immediately. "No." "Sarah wouldn't." Even so, the uneasy feeling refused to leave his heart. Back inside his office, he opened a stack of reports. However... Nearly ten minutes passed without him reading a single page. His eyes remained fixed on the same paragraph. His mind was somewhere else.
Meanwhile... Sarah and Samantha gradually calmed down. After washing their faces and fixing their makeup, they looked at each other. Sarah suddenly laughed. "We're going to scare everyone if they see our swollen eyes." Samantha couldn't help laughing too. "You're right." Sarah handed her a tissue. "Everything will be alright." Samantha nodded slowly. "I'll try." The afternoon passed quickly.
Employees slowly began packing their belongings as work came to an end. Chris looked at the clock. Five o'clock. He immediately stood up. Without wasting another second, he walked toward Sarah's office. When he entered, Sarah was already organizing the documents on her desk. Seeing him, she smiled brightly. "Is it time already?" Chris nodded. "Yes." He smiled. "Hurry." "I still have to show my parents our marriage certificate." Sarah giggled. "You've been talking about that all day." Chris laughed. "They've waited long enough."
Sarah stood up and grabbed her handbag. Just as they were about to leave, Chris suddenly froze. Sarah looked at him curiously. "What is it?" Chris scratched the back of his neck awkwardly. "This morning..." "We came by taxi." Sarah nodded. "So?" "I didn't ride my bicycle." Sarah blinked before suddenly understanding. "Oh... Then we will go back together."
Chris shook his head, "If we leave together..." "...people will start talking." Chris nodded quickly. "My mysterious wife won't stay mysterious anymore." Sarah burst into laughter. "So it is not that you are embarrassed to be seen with me..." "You're protecting your mysterious wife?" Chris grinned proudly. "Exactly." "My wife has worked so hard to stay mysterious." "I'm not ruining that in one day." Sarah playfully rolled her eyes. "You really take this seriously."
Chris nodded dramatically. "Of course." "My mysterious wife is carrying my child." "I have to protect her identity." Sarah couldn't stop smiling. Then Chris looked at her seriously. "Wife..." Sarah tilted her head. "Hmm?" "Were you crying during lunch?" Sarah froze. Chris continued softly, "I heard both you and Samantha." "I didn't come in because I thought you two needed privacy." He looked directly into her eyes. "Did something happen?" "Is Father-in-law alright?"
Sarah smiled gently. "No..." She had barely spoken when Bang! The office door suddenly swung open. Samantha walked in with her handbag already over her shoulder. She looked at the two of them before sighing dramatically. "You two really don't get tired of staring at each other, do you?" Sarah laughed immediately. Chris coughed awkwardly. Samantha folded her arms. "I've been waiting downstairs for nearly ten minutes." "Are you planning to spend the night in the office?"
Chris rubbed his nose. "We were just talking." Samantha smirked. "I'm sure." She pointed toward the door. "Come on." "The driver is waiting." Sarah smiled. "You're the driver." "Exactly." "So don't make me wait." The three of them finally walked downstairs together. Just as Chris had predicted... The moment employees saw the three executives walking side by side, countless eyes turned toward them.
Fortunately, Samantha was between Sarah and Chris. Most people simply assumed the Director and Vice Director were discussing company matters. Nobody suspected anything more. Outside the headquarters, Samantha unlocked her black Rolls-Royce. She slid into the driver's seat. Sarah naturally took the back seat beside Chris. Chris smiled secretly. His mysterious wife... ...was still safe.
Samantha glanced at them through the rearview mirror and shook her head with a helpless smile. "You two look like newlyweds." Sarah and Chris looked at each other before laughing. Without another word, Samantha started the Royce. The luxury car slowly pulled away from the Wood IT Company headquarters, disappearing into the evening traffic.
