C215 She Married A Monster
The gentle knock at the front door drew everyone's attention. Knock. Knock. The entire dining room fell silent once again. Everyone instinctively turned toward the entrance before slowly looking back at Ben. Ben immediately raised both hands. "It isn't Natalie." "I didn't invite anyone." One of the maids walked toward the door and opened it.
The moment the visitor stepped inside... Everyone at the dining table froze. "...Christopher Chambers?" Chris looked equally surprised to find the entire Wood family gathered around the dining table. He quickly composed himself before smiling politely. "Good evening, Mr. Wood." "Mrs. Wood." "Good evening, everyone." Kelvin smiled warmly. "Chris." "What brings you here at this hour?" Before Chris could answer... Ben's cold voice interrupted. "What are you doing here?" "You are not invited here."
The cheerful atmosphere that Kelvin was trying to create instantly disappeared. Chris looked toward Ben before calmly answering, "I came to check on someone." Ben let out a sarcastic laugh. "Oh?" "And who exactly?" Chris ignored the sarcasm. His concerned eyes searched the dining room until they landed on Sarah. Only after seeing her sitting there safely did he secretly breathe a sigh of relief. The tension in his shoulders disappeared.
He smiled gently. "My wife." Sarah instantly blushed. She suddenly remembered that her phone had been switched off the entire day. Chris walked a little closer. "I was worried." "I called you many times." "There wasn't even a single answer." "You also didn't come to work." He glanced toward Samantha. "Vice Director Samantha didn't report for work either." "I became worried." "So I thought I should come here first." Sarah lowered her head guiltily. "I'm sorry..." "My phone has been off the whole day."
Kelvin quietly exchanged glances with Tracy. The two elders smiled unconsciously. Seeing a man worrying so much about their daughter... Made them feel unexpectedly relieved. Tracy warmly stood up. "Chris." "You've already come all this way." "Come and have dinner with us." Chris politely shook his head. "Thank you, Mrs. Wood." "I don't want to disturb your family dinner." "I just came to..." Before he could finish his sentence, someone interrupted him... Ben suddenly slammed his hand against the table. Bang! "What?"
Everyone looked toward him. Ben stared directly at Chris. "So you came here to check on them?" His voice became colder with every word. "You're quite brave." "You married my sister without my approval..." "And now..." "You've come asking about my wife as well?" The dining room instantly turned tense. Sarah frowned. "Brother..." But Chris calmly interrupted her. His expression remained surprisingly composed. "Sarah is carrying my child." "So naturally..." "I worry about her."
His eyes slowly shifted toward Samantha. "And as for Samantha..." He smiled faintly. "Who wouldn't worry about her..." "...after she married a monster?" Silence. Then... "Pffft..." Sarah covered her mouth. She tried holding it in. She failed. "Hahaha!" Her laughter echoed throughout the dining room. Even Kelvin couldn't stop the corners of his mouth from lifting. Ben's face immediately darkened. "My relationship with my wife is none of your business." "She does not need your sympathy." Chris, however, looked completely innocent. "What?" "I only spoke the truth."
Sarah stood up while still laughing. "My phone has been switched off." "I'm really okay." "The baby is fine too." Chris nodded thoughtfully. "We can't be completely sure." Sarah blinked. "What?" Chris spoke naturally. "Didn't we agree yesterday?" "We were supposed to go to the hospital today for another examination." The entire room became quiet. Sarah stared blankly at him. "Yesterday?" "Did we discuss that?" She searched her memory. Nothing.
Chris suddenly gave her an almost invisible wink. Only then... Everything clicked. "Alicia!" Sarah slapped her forehead dramatically. "Oh!" "Oh no!" "How could I forget?" Everyone stared at her in confusion. She quickly turned toward Kelvin and Tracy. "Mom." "Dad." "I have to go to the hospital." "I'll see you later." Kelvin blinked. "What?" "What about dinner?" "And where's your phone?" "What about your wallet?"
Sarah was already hurrying toward the entrance. "I'll explain later!" Without another word... She disappeared outside. Chris scratched the back of his head awkwardly. He smiled apologetically. "Mr. Wood..." "Mrs. Wood..." "It was nice seeing everyone." "I promise she'll come back." He quickly bowed before following after Sarah. The moment the front door closed... Silence returned once more. Kelvin stared toward the entrance before letting out a helpless laugh. "Our daughter..." "...has truly changed."
Outside the residence... Sarah hurried toward the driveway. She instinctively remembered that she did not take her handbag. Then suddenly froze. "My car keys..." She turned around. "They're upstairs." Chris had already caught up with her. "Looking for keys?" Sarah shook her head. "I left them in my room." She sighed. "I'll go back and fetch them." Chris smiled mysteriously. "No need." He pointed toward the gate. "Let's go."
Sarah followed his finger. Parked quietly outside... Was an unfamiliar blue Hyundai. She frowned. "Whose car is that?" Chris grinned. "Come and see." Curious, Sarah followed him. The driver's window slowly rolled down. When she saw who was sitting behind the steering wheel... Her eyes widened. "Mike?" She blinked several times. "Since when do you drive?" I laughed. "Not long." Sarah looked from me... To the car... Then back at me again.
She couldn't hide her surprise. "You actually drove here?" Before I could answer... Chris sighed dramatically. "See?" "I'm always the last one in everything everything." "First Mike got married." "Then he became Vice Director." "Now he suddenly drives." He folded his arms with exaggerated disappointment. "I officially quit competing with you brother." Sarah burst into laughter. "You deserve it."
Chris placed a hand over his chest dramatically. "My wife..." "How could you say something so heartless?" Even I couldn't help laughing. For the first time that entire day... The heavy atmosphere surrounding everyone seemed to disappear. Still smiling... The three of us climbed into the blue Hyundai. A few moments later... The car slowly pulled away from the Wood family residence... Heading toward the City Hospital.
