C216 My Wife Is A Terrible Liar
The blue Hyundai rolled smoothly through the evening traffic. Inside the car, the atmosphere was far lighter than it had been at the Wood residence. Sarah sat in the back seat while Chris sat next to her at the back. For a few minutes, no one spoke. Then Sarah suddenly leaned forward and smiled. "Chris..." "How did you even come up with such a wild plan?"
Chris turned to look at her. "What plan?" She laughed. "The hospital examination." "If you hadn't winked at me..." "I wouldn't have remembered Alicia at all." Chris scratched his head sheepishly. "I was running out of excuses." "I couldn't exactly tell everyone we were going to congratulate Alicia." Sarah giggled. "You nearly gave me a heart attack." I laughed while keeping my eyes on the road. "Brother." "You did well." "Telling them would have rose unnecessary questions."
Chris proudly puffed out his chest. "Of course." "I'm naturally talented." I shook my head. "Don't praise yourself too much." The three of us laughed. After the laughter died down, Chris's expression became serious again. "Now..." "You tell me." "What really happened today?" Sarah looked away. "What do you mean?" Chris folded his arms. "You know exactly what I mean." "You switched off your phone." "You didn't come to work." "Neither did Samantha."
He paused before continuing. "And yesterday..." "You were crying with samantha." "When I asked what was wrong..." "Something interrupted us." Sarah lowered her head. She remained silent. I glanced at Chris before speaking. "Brother..." "Didn't you tell me Samantha stopped you from asking?" Chris nodded. "Exactly." Sarah looked at me in surprise. "You already told him?"
Chris smiled helplessly. "Would he have driven all the way to the Wood residence if I hadn't?" He sighed. "So..." "What happened?" Sarah smiled awkwardly. She couldn't possibly expose everything that had happened inside the Wood family. No matter how close they were... Those were still family matters. And worse some involed Mike. Yesterday's crying alone was because Samantha was crying over mike. And Today if it was not for Ben. They would have gone to work.
After thinking for several seconds, she finally answered. "Well..." "I celebrated Alicia's pregnancy yesterday." "I became so excited that I couldn't sleep." "So this morning..." "I woke up very late." "I felt dizzy." "That's why I sent you a message saying I wasn't coming to work." "And then..." "I switched off my phone." Chris stared at her quietly. After several seconds... He laughed. "My wife..." "...you're a terrible liar." Sarah immediately protested. "What?" "How am I lying?"
Chris smiled. "I know you." "When you're nervous..." "You avoid looking people in the eyes." "You've been staring out the window ever since I asked." Sarah immediately looked at him. "I wasn't!" Chris chuckled. "See?" "You just proved my point." I couldn't help laughing. "Sister-in-law..." "You really need to work on your acting." Sarah pouted. "You two are bullying me."
Chris laughed again before asking, "Fine." "I won't force you." "But then explain one thing." "Why didn't Samantha come to work either?" Sarah instantly choked. "Sam?" "Well..." "She..." "She wasn't feeling well." Chris slowly nodded. "I see." He didn't question her any further. Instead, he smiled. "I know Ben was somehow involved." "It's alright." "You can tell me another day." Sarah's eyes widened. "How did you know that?"
Chris looked out of the window. "I know my wife." "Your message this morning." "The switched-off phone." "The tears yesterday." "And now these excuses..." "They don't match." He smiled gently. "But that's okay." "When you're ready..." "You'll tell me." Sarah stared at him quietly. A warm feeling spread through her heart. She didn't realise someone could understand her so well.
Chris suddenly grinned. "Besides..." "Before, you ask me how I knew to mention the hospital..." He looked back at her. "Think about it." "We understand each other." "I know how your mind works." Sarah burst into laughter. "You really are impossible." Then she suddenly clapped her hands. "Oh!" "We can't go empty-handed!" I smiled. "There's really no need." "We already took breakfast to Alicia this morning." "And Grandpa Peter and Grandma Georgia are still with her."
Sarah shook her head stubbornly. "That doesn't count." "I'm still buying something." Neither Chris nor I argued. We both knew there was no stopping her once she made up her mind. A few minutes later... The blue Hyundai pulled into the City Hospital parking area. The moment the car stopped, Sarah unfastened her seatbelt. "You two wait." "I'll only take a few minutes." Before either of us could reply... She hurried toward the convenience store beside the hospital.
Chris and I exchanged helpless smiles. "Your sister-in-law..." "...is really energetic." I laughed. "She always has been." Inside the shop, Sarah approached the cashier. "Excuse me." "Do you accept Apple Pay?" The young shop assistant smiled. "Yes, ma'am." "We do." "Perfect." Sarah picked up a shopping basket and began walking through the aisles. She selected healthy instant porridge. Several cartons of fresh fruit juice. Fresh apples. Oranges. Bananas. A variety of berries.
She paused before adding body lotion. Moisturising cream. Soft towels. Sanitary pads. Wet wipes. Toothpaste. A new toothbrush. Facial tissues. Slippers. A warm pair of socks. Even a small packet of chocolates. Chris, who had been waiting outside, eventually became curious. "She's taking forever." "Brother why don't you go inside i will go look for her." We will follow you soon." I nodded. As i pressed the elevator. He walked into the shop.
The moment he saw two overflowing shopping baskets... He froze. "My wife..." "Are you moving into the hospital too?" Sarah laughed. "No." "I just remembered women need lots of things after being pregnant." "Everything becomes complicated." Chris shook his head helplessly before picking up the heavier shopping bags. "I'll carry these." Sarah smiled sweetly. "Thank you."
The cashier processed everything. Sarah simply unlocked her iPhone, authenticated the payment, and held it over the payment terminal. Beep. "Payment successful." The shop assistant smiled. "Thank you, ma'am." Chris looked at the number of bags again and laughed. "I suddenly understand why Mike wanted us to wait." Sarah smiled proudly. "Alicia is carrying our future niece or nephew." "Of course we should spoil her." Together, carrying several large shopping bags, the two of them left the shop and made their way toward the VIP ward, where Alicia was recovering.
