C415 Surrounded
Mark immediately slowed down. The Range Rover came to a stop near the edge of the bushes. Before the men behind him could reach the vehicle, Mark opened the door and jumped out. He ran into the bushes without looking back. His shoes struck the dry ground as he pushed through branches and leaves. He could hear vehicles screeching to a stop behind him. "He's out!" someone shouted. Mark continued running. He knew he could not remain in the open. If the men saw him, he would become an easy target. He moved deeper into the trees, crouching whenever the branches became too low. His breathing grew heavier, but he forced himself to continue. Behind him, Brian stepped out of one of the vehicles. He looked toward Mark's abandoned Range Rover, then toward the bushes. "He must have run on foot," Brian said. He raised his weapon. "Come on. Chase him. We have to kill him." The men spread out and entered the bushes. Mark heard them approaching. He stopped running and pressed himself against the trunk of a thick tree.
For several seconds, he remained still. His breathing was loud in his ears. He reached beneath his jacket and pulled out his gun. He checked the magazine quickly. There were enough bullets. Mark looked around. The trees provided some cover, but not enough to remain there forever. He needed to slow the men down until his police team arrived. He moved carefully between the trees, searching for a position from which he could defend himself. The sound of footsteps grew louder. Branches snapped. Men shouted to one another. "Check that side!" "Don't let him escape!" "Spread out!" Mark crouched behind a large tree and waited. One of the men passed between two bushes. Another followed behind him. Mark held his breath. He waited until the first man moved into his line of sight. Then he fired. Bang! The gunshot echoed through the trees. The man staggered backward and collapsed, clutching his chest.
For a moment, everyone froze. Nobody had expected Mark to fight back. The sudden silence was broken only by the sound of the wounded man falling to the ground. "Where did that come from?" one of the attackers shouted. Another man spun around, searching the trees. Brian immediately raised his hand. "Everyone take cover!" The men scattered. Some dropped behind trees while others crouched near the bushes. Weapons were raised in every direction. Nobody knew where Mark was hiding. Brian's eyes moved slowly across the forest. "Do not fire blindly," he ordered. "Find him." Mark remained behind the tree, his back pressed against the bark. He could hear the men moving. He allowed himself a small breath of relief. They were slowing down. That meant his police team might have enough time to reach him. Mark glanced toward the direction of the gravel road.
He could not see the vehicles from where he stood, but he knew the men were still searching. If he could keep moving, perhaps he could reach another road or find somewhere to hide until help arrived. He waited for the gunmen to move farther away. Then he quietly stepped from behind the tree. He crouched low and moved toward another group of trees. He had only taken a few steps when one of the attackers suddenly spotted movement. "There!" Mark immediately ducked. Multiple gunshots erupted. Bullets struck the trees around him, sending pieces of bark into the air. Mark ran. He moved from one tree to another, keeping his body low as he searched for cover. More shots rang out behind him. He dropped to one knee behind a fallen tree trunk. The attackers shouted as they tried to follow his movements. "He's moving left!" "No, he's behind the trees!" "Don't let him get away!"
Mark fired one shot toward the direction of the voices, forcing the men to retreat behind cover. He took advantage of the moment and ran again. The forest seemed endless. Every direction looked similar. Trees surrounded him, branches scratched against his clothes, and dry leaves crackled beneath his shoes. His breathing became heavier. His legs were beginning to ache. But he could not stop. He knew that the moment he stopped moving for too long, the men would find him. Behind him, Brian was becoming increasingly frustrated. "He is only one man!" he shouted. "How difficult can it be to find him?" The men continued spreading out. They moved between the trees, checking every possible hiding place. Brian's group was larger than Mark had expected. There were too many men. Even if Mark managed to escape one group, another could be waiting ahead.
Mark reached another section of trees and crouched behind a thick trunk. He checked his phone. There was still no call from his team. He looked toward the road again. Nothing. Only the sound of distant gunfire. "Come on," he whispered. "Where are you?" A sudden burst of gunfire forced him to move again. Mark ran toward a cluster of trees on his right. He fired once over his shoulder to keep the attackers from advancing too quickly. Then he disappeared behind the trees. For a few moments, everything went quiet. Brian raised his weapon and looked around. "Where is he?" Nobody answered. The men slowly began moving forward. They were no longer rushing blindly. They had learned from Mark's first attack. They moved carefully, checking behind trees and scanning the bushes.
Mark watched them from a distance. He realized something immediately. They were adapting. Their movements were becoming more organized. The longer he stayed in the forest, the more difficult it would become to escape. He needed to find another route. Mark began moving backward, trying to create distance between himself and the attackers. But the forest was closing around him. Trees stood in every direction. There were no clear roads, no buildings, and no visible way out. He moved toward a slight clearing, hoping it would lead him toward another path. Instead, he stopped. Something felt wrong. The voices behind him had disappeared. The gunfire had stopped. For several seconds, Mark heard nothing but his own breathing. He slowly turned his head. To his left, a man stepped out from behind a tree.
Mark immediately raised his weapon. Before he could fire, another man appeared on his right. Then another. Mark took a step backward. More men emerged from the trees ahead of him. He looked behind him. There were men there too. They had spread across the forest without him noticing. Brian's men had surrounded him. Mark stood completely still. His gun remained in his hand, but his eyes moved rapidly from one direction to another. There were too many of them. The trees that had protected him moments earlier had become walls trapping him inside. Mark slowly realized the truth. He was surrounded.
