C42 He Didn’t Confess, Words Failed To Come Out
Soon the picnic area was filled with snacks, sandwiches, drinks, fruit, and various small treats Alicia had packed. Looking at everything, Chris shook his head. “You planned this like a military operation.” “Of course.” “Who brings this much food for four people?”
Alicia pointed at him. “The same person who knows will eat half of it.” Chris looked offended. “I am being targeted.” “Because you deserve it.” Again everyone laughed.
As the morning continued, conversations became easier. Laura fit into the group surprisingly well. At first she seemed quiet and reserved, but once she became comfortable, she started speaking more often.
She talked about her studies, her hobbies, and how exhausting it was having a father who worried about everything she did. At that statement, Alicia immediately nodded. “Tell me about it.” Laura looked surprised. “Your father worries too?” “My father has security teams.” Laura blinked. “I think you win.” The girls laughed together.
Watching them get along relieved me. I had worried that introducing Laura to my friends might feel awkward, but somehow everything seemed natural. At one point Chris leaned toward me and whispered. “You look happy.” I immediately denied it. “I always look happy.” “No.”
He pointed toward Laura. “You have been smiling at her for nearly an hour.” Before I could respond, Alicia suddenly appeared beside us. “What are you two whispering about?” Chris immediately pointed at me. “The Nerd.” “What about him?” “He keeps smiling.” Alicia looked at me suspiciously.
I quickly grabbed a drink. “I have no idea what he is talking about.” Neither of them believed me. Alicia exchanged a glance with Chris before both of them laughed. Somehow they continued finding opportunities to tease me. Today they were clearly teaming up against me.
Meanwhile, Laura seemed completely unaware of what was happening. Or perhaps she was pretending not to notice. Around noon, the park became much busier. Families arrived with children. Couples walked along the paths.
The blue sky was so bright creating a beautiful scene. Eventually Alicia stood up. “Let’s go for a walk.” None of us objected. The weather was perfect. Not too hot. Not too cold. Just enough sunshine to make everything feel peaceful. The four of us wandered through the park while talking about random topics.
At some point Chris and Alicia began arguing again. Nobody knew how it started. One moment they were walking normally. The next moment they were debating whether pineapple belonged on pizza. “It absolutely does not,” Chris declared. “It absolutely does,” Alicia replied. “You are a criminal.” “You have no taste.”
Laura laughed so hard enjoying the scene. I couldn’t stop laughing either. The more they argued, the more ridiculous their points became. Eventually Laura shook her head. “They really sound like siblings.” I smiled. “That’s what I’ve been saying.”
The argument continued for another ten minutes before they finally gave up. Afterward, we returned to the picnic area. Everyone seemed relaxed. Everyone except Alicia. At some point during the afternoon, she found herself quietly watching me and Laura.
She didn’t understand why. Whenever Laura spoke to me, Alicia would unconsciously pay attention. Whenever Laura laughed at one of my jokes, Alicia would notice. Whenever I smiled at Laura, she would somehow feel strange. It wasn’t anger. It wasn’t sadness. It wasn’t jealousy. At least that was what she kept telling herself.
Yet every time those thoughts appeared, she remembered the same thing. Mike was her brother. Chris was her brother too. Family was family. Relationships came and went. Family remained. That was what she had told herself countless times.
And yet… Why did she keep looking? Why did she keep paying attention? Why did she keep wondering whether Laura liked me? The questions refused to disappear. Eventually she shook her head. No. She was overthinking things. That had to be it.
Meanwhile, I was completely unaware of her inner struggle.
Seeing that it was becoming late and that the main thing for this picnic was not achieved yet, Alicia pointed at the space not far away from us and said to Chris, "Brother come and help me start the fire there." "Fire?" "Yes we have had enough snacks, take this braai stand and put it there. We will eat rosted barbecue." Only then did chris understand, he slowly stood up following Alicia. Leaving Laura and I behind.
For the first time, I was having an opportunity to speak to Laura without work getting in the way. Just us two talking. We talked about books. Movies. Travel. Dreams. Future plans. The more we spoke, the more comfortable I felt around her. But still i couldn't confess. Words failed to come out whenever i tried.
At one point Laura smiled. “You know, you’re very different from the rumors.” I laughed. “That’s not exactly difficult.” “No, I mean it.” She looked serious. “The person people describe online doesn’t exist.” I didn’t know how to respond. So I simply smiled. “Thank you.”
For a brief moment, neither of us spoke. The silence wasn’t uncomfortable. In fact, it felt surprisingly pleasant. Then Chris suddenly appeared between us. “There you are.” Both of us jumped. Chris looked completely innocent. “Why are you standing so close together?” “Chris.” “Yes?” “Go away.” Laura immediately started laughing. Seeing her laugh made me laugh too.
Soon Chris left after giving them few barbecue that was ready. Seeing this alicia smiled and thought. The idea of having braai stand and barbecue was a good one. The situation between Chris and her would have been awkward. The two of them alone.
When Chris got back to rosting barbecue, Alicia whispered, "It doesn't seem like Mike has confessed." "I am not sure why he has not done it yet" "come on you were there just now." Chris nodded "yes i was there but they were talking about different things that are not related to this." They both laughed and continued rosting the barbecue while eating it.
By late afternoon, the sun had begun its slow descent. The park was still lively, but many families had started packing their things. Looking around at my friends, I felt strangely grateful.
A few months ago, my life had been filled with disappointment, betrayal, and uncertainty. Now I had people who genuinely cared about me. Chris. Alicia. Maybe Laura as well. Even if nothing romantic ever happened, I was thankful for this moment.
None of us realized that from a distance, hidden behind a row of trees, someone was watching. A man lowered his phone after taking several photographs. His expression was cold. The instructions he had received were simple. Observe. And Report. His new plan was already beginning to take shape.
Unaware of the approaching storm, the four of us continued enjoying the peaceful afternoon beneath the summer sky. Everything felt perfect. None of us knew that this happiness was about to be tested.
