C47 He Callapsed
Alicia came back after speakinh to her father on the phone. She noticed that Chris was not there and so is Mike, her eyes searched through out the hall and landed on me.
Chris had left the celebration earlier than the rest of us. At first, Alicia and I did not think much of it. The party was still lively, business partners were congratulating us, and people kept coming over to talk. We simply assumed that Chris had become tired and gone back to his room to rest.
What neither of us knew was that something had happened upstairs. After leaving the celebration hall, Chris made his way toward his room. With every step, he felt increasingly uncomfortable. His body felt strangely hot, and his thoughts were becoming clouded. By the time he reached his floor, his vision had started to blur. He managed to reach his door before his legs gave out beneath him.
Few minutes later not far away, Sarah had just stepped out of the elevator. She noticed someone lying on the floor near one of the rooms. "Chris?" she called out in surprise. Receiving no response, she hurried over. When she reached him, she was shocked to find that he was burning with fever-like heat.
Panic flashed across her face. "Chris! Can you hear me?" His eyes opened slightly, but he seemed disoriented. Sarah tried helping him stand, but Chris was much taller and heavier than she expected. After several failed attempts, she finally managed to drag him into his room before anyone walking through the corridor could see them.
Once inside, she guided him onto the bed. Her first instinct was to lower his temperature. She rushed to the refrigerator, grabbed ice and cold water, and returned as quickly as possible. However, nothing seemed to help. Chris looked increasingly uncomfortable.
Sarah had never experienced anything like this before. Though intelligent and mature in many ways, she had spent most of her life focused on her studies abroad. Situations like this were completely outside her experience.
For a moment she simply sat beside him, unsure what to do. "Chris..." she called softly. His eyes opened slightly. For several seconds neither spoke. The atmosphere inside the room gradually became quiet. Sarah's heart started beating faster. She suddenly became aware of how close they were sitting.
The realization made her cheeks turn red. Embarrassed, she looked away. Outside the room, the celebration continued. Inside, however, the world felt strangely silent.
Chris vision was blurred he tried finding comfort but only Sarah was there. He hugged her tightly, at first Sarah tried to shake him off but noticing his burning body that even ice failed to cool it down, she allowed him to hug her. Warm hug atmosphere turned into a kiss that nobody knows who started it. Sarah's mind went blank she had few drinks earlier so her emotions took control and explicit scenes happened. As soon as they were done Chris fell into a deep sleep. Sarah noticed that his fever had calmed down. She tried to get up but she was too tired her body was itching, Clearly Chris had enough energy to torture her. She eventually fell asleep.
Back downstairs, Alicia and I remained at the party a little longer. Kelvin was in an excellent mood and personally thanked many of the employees who had contributed to the project. The overseas partners were equally pleased, and the atmosphere remained cheerful. Eventually, however, even we became tired.
"I think Big Brother has already gone to sleep," Alicia said while stretching. I laughed. "Probably. He was tired the entire day." "Let's go rest as well." We both laughed. After saying our goodbyes, we headed toward our respective rooms. When I finally entered mine, I loosened my tie and sat down on the edge of the bed.
My phone vibrated. A message had arrived. The moment I saw the name, I smiled. Laura. "Nerd, how are things going? When are you all coming back?" Seeing her message immediately improved my mood. Perhaps it was because I had drunk a little during the celebration. Perhaps it was because the project had been successful. Or perhaps it was simply because I liked talking to her.
Whatever the reason, I replied much faster than usual. I told her about the successful contract and how everyone was celebrating. After sending the message, I placed my phone beside me and started changing out of my suit.
Meanwhile, in her room, Alicia had also returned from the celebration. She had only had a few drinks, but they were enough to leave her slightly dizzy. The moment she entered her room, she locked the door behind her and collapsed onto the bed.
For several minutes she simply stared at the ceiling. Unfortunately for her, her mind refused to stay quiet. Images from earlier in the evening kept replaying themselves. Especially one particular image. Mike standing in his room with only his formal trousers on while searching for a shirt. His ABs were visible.
The memory caused her face to turn bright red. "What am I even thinking about?" she muttered while covering her face with a pillow. Yet the more she tried not to think about it, the clearer the memory became. Embarrassed, she buried her face deeper into the pillow.
Back in my room, I lay on the bed staring at my phone. Laura had not replied to my last message. Normally I would have left it there. Tonight, however, I felt unusually brave. Or maybe unusually foolish. I took out my phone. I was dizzy. But After staring at the screen for several moments, I finally typed "Good night. I've been thinking about you all day. Sleep well, Laura."
Without reading it again, I pressed send. Satisfied, I immediately locked my phone and tossed it onto the bed. I never noticed my mistake. A few seconds later, Alicia's thoughts were interrupted by her phone. Her phone lit up. Seeing my name, she frowned. "What does he want now?"
Curious, she opened the message. The moment she read it, she froze. Her heart skipped a beat. "I've been thinking about you all day..." For a brief moment excitement surged through her chest. Then her eyes moved to the last word. Laura. The excitement instantly turned into confusion.
She sat upright. "What does this mean?" Did he send it to the wrong person? Was he drunk? Was it really meant for Laura? Or had he intentionally sent it to her? Questions filled her mind. Before she could think any further, her phone began ringing. The caller ID displayed a familiar name. Dad. Mark Mooney.
Taking a deep breath, Alicia answered the call. The conversation lasted several minutes. Most of it involved her father asking whether the trip was going well and reminding her to be careful overseas. Hearing her father's voice gradually calmed her thoughts.
After ending the call, she looked at the message one final time. Then she locked her phone and placed it on the bedside table. "No point thinking about it tonight," she whispered. Still confused and unable to understand the strange feelings in her heart, Alicia finally closed her eyes. Within minutes, sleep claimed her.
Outside, the lights of France continued shining through the night.
