C530 The Warehouse Surveillance
Soon, everyone said goodbye to their families and began making their way towards the warehouse. We had spent the morning preparing for the mission, but now it was time to put those preparations into action. As agreed, we first met at Lucia Goods. We left our personal vehicles there and decided to travel together in a single car. The fewer vehicles we took to the area, the less attention we would attract. After making sure everyone had what they needed, we set off. The journey was relatively quiet. Everyone understood that our mission was different from the operations we were accustomed to. We weren't going there to launch an attack or eliminate a target. The Mayor had instructed us to identify Ann Smith and take photographs of her. However, given everything we knew about the Mayor's suspicious behaviour, none of us was willing to assume that the mission would be straightforward. When we arrived near the warehouse, we stopped at a distance and took a moment to observe our surroundings. I looked at the others before reaching for the communication equipment I had brought with me. "Before we go any further, everyone needs to understand how these work."
I began distributing the small communication earpieces. "Each of you must take one. They'll allow us to communicate with one another even when we're separated. That way, we won't have to keep moving around or meeting in the open just to exchange information." Everyone collected an earpiece and examined it. I held mine up so they could see it clearly. "There's another feature I want you to know about. Each earpiece has a small camera built into it. If you press this button, the camera starts recording." Sarah examined hers with interest. "So, we can record what happens without having to hold a camera in our hands?" "No," I replied. Everyone turned towards me. I paused before explaining the limitation. "The device is small, and its memory is limited. I believe it can record only about two or three minutes at a time, so don't assume it will capture everything. We'll still need to use the two proper cameras we brought." Amanda nodded as she examined her earpiece. "Understood. We'll have to be selective about what we record." "Precisely," I said. "Make sure you know how to activate the camera before we get any closer. We don't want anyone fumbling with the equipment when something important happens." One by one, everyone checked their devices one more time. Once I was satisfied that they understood how the communication equipment worked, I put mine on. Alicia looked towards the warehouse. "All right, everyone. Let's move." We left the car and proceeded towards the area surrounding the warehouse, remaining at a distance while observing the location.
At exactly 16:00, we had reached a suitable position from which to begin our surveillance. We still had an hour before the scheduled mission, giving us time to assess the situation and decide how best to carry out our assignment. Alicia looked around at the group. "Guys, remember what the Mayor told us. Our primary objective is to identify Ann Smith and establish who she is. We need photographs and as much useful information as we can gather without exposing ourselves." She paused, making sure everyone was listening. "I don't think we should engage anyone unless the situation leaves us with no other choice. We're here to observe, not start a fight. That doesn't mean we should leave ourselves defenceless, though. Everyone should remain prepared for the possibility that things might go wrong." We all nodded. Alicia then gestured towards the two cameras. "Our most important task is to take pictures. We have two cameras, so I need two pairs of people to handle them. Is anyone willing to volunteer and choose a partner?" Sarah immediately raised her hand. "I'll take one camera. My partner will be my husband, Chris." Chris looked at her and smiled. "Of course. Who else would you choose?" Before Alicia could respond, Laura spoke up. "I'll take the other camera with Amanda." Amanda nodded in agreement. "I don't have a problem with that."
Alicia stared at the four of them for a moment before laughing. "Wait a minute! I didn't say this was supposed to be a couple's mission. How are you going to concentrate when you're working alongside your partners?" I couldn't help laughing. "Well, I was planning to partner with you." Alicia slowly turned towards me. "What?" I shrugged innocently. "What? You're my wife. I thought we were allowed to work together." She rolled her eyes, but I could see the smile she was trying to hide. Then she turned towards Chris. "Chris, why do I suddenly feel like you're responsible for all this?" Chris raised both hands. "Don't look at me! I'm just as confused as you are. For once, you should ask Mike what he's planning." I laughed. "Why are you dragging me into this?" "Because you're the one who just admitted you wanted to partner with your wife," Chris replied. The others laughed, and even Alicia couldn't maintain her serious expression. "Whatever," she said, shaking her head. She cleared her throat and returned to the mission. "All right. Sarah and Chris will handle the first camera, while Laura and Amanda will handle the second. I want both pairs to focus on capturing clear photographs of Ann Smith. If possible, record the exchange without drawing attention to yourselves." The four of them nodded. Alicia then turned towards Samantha and Faith. "You two will be responsible for getting a closer look at the people involved and observing what is being exchanged. I want us to establish whether this is simply a delivery or whether something else is happening. Don't put yourselves in unnecessary danger just to get a better view." Samantha nodded confidently. "We can handle that." Faith agreed. "We'll be careful." "Good," Alicia replied. "Stay within a safe area, keep your communication devices active, and report anything unusual. If you feel that you've been noticed, don't try to be heroes. Your safety comes first." Samantha and Faith acknowledged the instructions.
Finally, Alicia turned towards me. "Mike and I will remain here. I'll keep watch from a position where I can observe the area, and I'll have my rifle ready in case we need to respond to a serious threat." She glanced at the others before continuing. "Mike will monitor our communication channel and coordinate with everyone. If something happens, he needs to know where we are and what we're seeing. Nobody should make a major decision without communicating it first, unless there's an immediate threat to their safety." I nodded. "I'll keep the channel open. If anyone notices something suspicious, report it immediately. Even if it seems unimportant, let the rest of us know." "Understood," everyone replied. Alicia looked around at the group one last time. "Remember, we're dealing with people whose intentions we don't know and the fact that the Mayor somehow knows exactly where and when this meeting happening is suspicious. We cannot assume this is an ordinary transaction." Her expression grew serious. "We observe, we gather information, and we leave safely. That's our mission." Nobody argued. After one final check of our communication equipment, everyone began moving towards their chosen positions. Sarah and Chris went together with one camera, while Laura and Amanda took the other. Samantha and Faith moved towards an area where they could observe the warehouse without getting too close. Alicia and I remained behind, watching the others spread out. I adjusted my earpiece and tested the communication channel. "Everyone, do you read me?"
A few seconds later, Sarah's voice came through. "Clear." Chris followed. "Crystal clear, brother." Laura and Amanda confirmed that they could hear me, and Samantha and Faith did the same. Satisfied that everyone was connected, I looked towards Alicia. "Well, Cipher, everyone is in position." She kept her eyes on the warehouse. "Now we wait." I glanced at the time. It was still early, and Ann Smith was expected at 17:00, but we had no guarantee that either she would follow the plan exactly as we had been told. For all we knew, the meeting could be delayed, moved, or cancelled altogether. And there was still one question I couldn't get out of my mind. Why was the Mayor so determined to send us here? I looked at Alicia, but she appeared to be thinking about the same thing. Neither of us said anything. We simply continued watching the warehouse, waiting for the first sign that the people we had come to find were finally arriving.
