C532 Our Leader Is Gone
Sarah was still on her knees beside Samantha, crying as she desperately tried to wake her up. "Sam, please wake up! Samantha, can you hear me?" She gently shook her friend's shoulder, but Samantha remained unconscious. Blood continued to run from the wound on her head, making Sarah even more terrified. A few steps away, Chris was helping Faith when he suddenly froze. He looked from Faith to Samantha. "You two were together! How did this happen? Faith couldn't answer. She was too overwhelmed by fear and grief to explain anything. Chris took a deep breath, forcing himself to concentrate. "Forget it. We need to get Samantha to the hospital immediately. Faith needs medical attention too." He helped Faith towards our car while I carried Samantha. "Sam, please don't do this to me," Sarah whispered through her tears. "You can't leave us. Not like this." Chris opened the vehicle door. "Sarah, help me get her inside. We don't have time!" I said. We managed to get Samantha into the car. Faith climbed in beside her, and Chris took the driver's seat. Before leaving, Sarah looked towards the rest of us. "Please find Alicia."
Then Chris drove away, taking Samantha and Faith to the hospital. I stood there, watching the vehicle disappear, unable to shake the feeling that everything was falling apart around us. Laura approached me, her expression a mixture of anger and disbelief. "Mike, where is Alicia?" I turned towards her, but I had no answer. Laura stepped closer. "I also want an explanation. Why didn't she shoot Hanna when she had the chance? We had her right there in front of us, and Alicia simply refused to act. Now Hanna has escaped, Samantha is badly injured, and Alicia has disappeared!" "Laura, not now," Amanda interrupted. "Not now?" Laura turned towards her. "When, then? When something else happens? We need to understand what went wrong!" I barely heard their argument. "Alicia!" My voice echoed through the area. I called her name again, louder this time. "Alicia!" Still nothing. I began searching the surrounding area, checking every place where she might have gone. I looked near the destroyed vehicle, along the road, and around the warehouse entrance. She was nowhere to be found. Amanda followed me, her expression becoming increasingly worried. "Mike, what happened out here? You and Alicia were together. How did you end up separated?" I stopped walking. For a moment, I couldn't bring myself to answer. My throat tightened, and tears began to fill my eyes. This was the life we had chosen. We had known that our work would expose us to danger, that every mission carried risks, and that one mistake could change everything. But knowing the risks had never made the thought of losing Alicia any easier.
I wiped my face and took a deep breath. "She rushed towards Samantha and Faith after the explosion. I was packing our equipment when she ran ahead of me. I don't know exactly what happened after that." Amanda stared at me. "You didn't see anyone take her?" I shook my head. "No. By the time I reached you all, she was already gone." Silence settled over us. Nobody knew what to say. I could see that Laura still wasn't convinced. She looked towards the warehouse, then back at me, as though she suspected there was something we hadn't discovered yet. We continued searching, but every passing minute made the situation more hopeless. Eventually, Amanda stopped and shook her head. "It's clear she's not here." She hesitated before asking the question none of us wanted to consider. "Mike, could they have taken her?" I looked at her. "Taken her? How?" Amanda had no answer. Laura suddenly looked towards me. "Wait a minute. The communication devices you gave us earlier. You said they had cameras built into them, right?" I nodded slowly. "Yes." "Then can't we check the footage? If Alicia recorded anything before she disappeared, we might be able to see what happened to her." I felt a small flicker of hope. "You're right. They should have recorded everything, provided she pressed the recording button." Amanda frowned. "But how will we know whether she activated it?"
I opened my mouth to answer, but something caught my attention near the ground. An earpiece lay among the scattered debris. I quickly bent down and picked it up. "Could this belong to Samantha or Alicia?" Amanda and Laura examined it, but neither could identify its owner. "I don't know," Amanda admitted. I turned the device over in my hand, studying its small camera. "If this belongs to Alicia, we might have a chance of finding out what happened to her." "But if it belongs to Samantha?" Laura asked. I looked towards the road. "Then we keep searching until we find something else." I placed the earpiece somewhere safe. We couldn't afford to waste any more time. Whatever had happened after the explosion, I needed to understand it before we could begin searching for Alicia properly. And if someone had taken my wife, I needed to know who they were and where they had taken her. At the hospital, Sarah could barely control her tears as the medical staff rushed Samantha into the emergency department. "Please, you have to save her!" she cried. "She's badly injured. Please help her!" A nurse tried to reassure her while the doctors examined Samantha. Faith was taken for treatment as well. Although her injuries appeared less severe, she had suffered several cuts and scratches from the explosion, and the medical staff wanted to ensure she was otherwise unharmed.
Sarah remained outside the emergency room, staring at the closed doors. "Sam, please don't die," she whispered. "Please." Chris stood beside her, equally worried but trying to remain calm. After a few minutes, a member of the medical staff came out and informed them that Samantha needed immediate surgery. Sarah's legs nearly gave way. "Surgery?" Chris caught her arm. "Sarah, sit down for a moment." "How can I sit down, Chris? She's in there fighting for her life!" "I know," he replied gently. "But we need to stay strong for her." Sarah covered her face with both hands and began crying again. Chris looked towards the operating area before turning back to her. "We need to inform everyone about what happened. I'll also have to return to the warehouse to collect Mike and the others. They shouldn't remain there any longer than necessary." Sarah nodded, wiping her tears. "Go. I'll call my parents and tell them what's happening." Chris gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze before leaving. Sarah remained seated for a moment, trying to steady her breathing. She had never imagined that their afternoon would end like this. They had gone to the warehouse expecting to gather information about Ann Smith. Instead, Samantha was being prepared for surgery, Faith was receiving treatment, and Alicia had vanished.
Sarah took out her phone and called Kelvin. The call connected quickly. "Sarah, my child." The moment she heard her father's voice, her composure crumbled. She tried to speak, but only sobs came out. Kelvin frowned. "Sarah? What's wrong?" When she failed to answer, he immediately put the call on speaker. At the time, the Wood and Chambers families were gathered together. Tracy, Valeria, David, and the others had been discussing family matters when Kelvin's sudden concern caught their attention. Everyone turned towards him. "Sarah," Kelvin said more firmly, "talk to me. What happened?" Sarah struggled to catch her breath. "Dad..." "Yes, my child. I'm listening." "It's Samantha." Her voice broke, and she began crying again. Kelvin and Tracy exchanged alarmed looks. Tracy immediately moved closer to the phone. "What happened to Sam? Sarah, please tell me!" Sarah tried to explain, but the words came out unevenly. "She's badly injured, Mom. We're at the hospital." Tracy went pale. "Badly injured? How? What happened to her?" Tears began streaming down her face. "Oh, God! How am I going to explain this to her parents?" Kelvin interrupted, his expression hardening as he tried to remain composed. "Sarah, listen to me. Stay at the hospital. Don't go anywhere. We're coming." "Okay, Dad." Kelvin ended the call and immediately stood up. "We need to leave now." Tracy wiped her tears and hurried to gather her things. Valeria rose as well. "I'm coming with you." She turned towards David. "David, please stay here with Monica and Tristan. We'll contact you as soon as we know more." David nodded, although his expression showed how concerned he was. "Go. I'll take care of them. Just keep me informed."
There was no time for further discussion. Kelvin, Tracy, Ben and Valeria hurried out, leaving David to look after the children. As they made their way to the hospital, Tracy struggled to hold back her tears. Samantha had already endured so much in her life. The thought of losing her was unbearable. Kelvin kept his eyes on the road, his jaw clenched. He needed answers. And he needed his daughter-in-law to survive. Back at the warehouse, Chris returned only to find us still searching for Alicia. He approached me immediately. "Mike, did you find her?" I shook my head. "No. She's nowhere around here." Chris looked towards the surrounding area, as though hoping he might spot her himself. "You think they took her?" I swallowed hard. "I don't know what else could have happened. She was here, and then she was gone. I think they took her." Chris's expression darkened. Laura asked. "What about Samantha and Faith?" Chris answered before I could. "We need to get to the hospital. Samantha was badly injured, and Faith was hurt too. We can't stay here any longer." I nodded. "Then let's go." We gathered the remaining equipment and made our way to the vehicles. As we prepared to leave, I looked towards the warehouse one final time. Everything had happened so quickly. We had arrived believing we were in control of the situation, only to discover that our plans had fallen apart within minutes. Hanna had escaped. Samantha was critically injured. And Alicia was missing. I clenched my jaw and climbed into the vehicle.
As we drove towards the hospital, I took out my phone and called Mark. He answered almost immediately. "Mike, how did it go? Did you see Ann Smith?" For a moment, I couldn't speak. How was I supposed to explain everything that had happened? How could I tell him that his daughter had disappeared while we were supposed to be protecting her? I took a deep breath. "Father, things went badly." There was a brief silence on the other end. "What do you mean? What happened?" "Samantha is critically injured. We're on our way to the hospital now." Mark's voice changed instantly. "What? How did that happen?" I closed my eyes for a moment. "There was an explosion. Samantha was caught in it, and Faith was injured too. We managed to get them away from the scene, but..." I couldn't finish the sentence. "Mike, what else happened?" My grip tightened around the phone. "Father, they took her." Silence. Then Mark spoke. "Who took whom?" I swallowed hard, forcing myself to say the words. "Father, they took Alicia." I heard him draw a sharp breath. "What?" "Hanna took her." For several seconds, Mark said nothing. I could only imagine what was going through his mind. He was the Police Minister, a man who had spent his life dealing with dangerous people and impossible situations. But this wasn't simply another criminal case. This was his daughter.
Finally, he spoke again, his voice tight with alarm. "Where are you, Mike? Tell me where you are. I'm coming immediately." "We're on our way to the hospital." "Which hospital?" I gave him the details. "All right. I'll meet you there. Don't do anything reckless until I arrive. Do you understand?" I stared through the window as the road passed by. "Yes, Father." The call ended. I lowered my phone and leaned back, trying to control the anger and fear building inside me. I had promised Alicia that I would protect her. Yet, in the space of a few minutes, she had disappeared before my eyes. I didn't know who took her, what they intended to do, or whether Alicia was even safe. But I knew one thing. I wasn't going to rest until I found my wife. And when I did, I would make sure that whoever had taken her answered for it.
