C28 Suspicion

ALARIC

I arrived at the so-called “work function” well before Sydney, dressed sharply, blending in seamlessly with the other corporate executives and socialites. On the outside, I looked calm, poised, even charming—but underneath, I was scanning, analyzing, hunting. There was something… off tonight, something subtle but impossible to ignore.

It started with a faint ripple in the air as soon as I stepped into the grand hall. Crowds of people milled about, cameras flashed incessantly, reporters whispered, but I didn’t notice any of that. My senses were tuned to a single source: the aura that prickled at my instincts like a warning. And there it was.

Andy.

The moment my eyes settled on him, a strange unease washed over me. He was Sydney’s date—or so I was told—but there was something unnatural in the way he moved, in the way he observed the crowd, the way he watched me. I couldn’t place it immediately, but instinct screamed that this man was more than he appeared.

I moved closer, keeping my distance but letting my eyes study him. He was tall, undeniably attractive in that calm, steady way, but there was a flicker in his expression—a subtle, fleeting edge—that I couldn’t ignore. And then the remarks started.

“You know, some people’s lives are… complicated,” he said softly, in a tone that carried weight I couldn’t interpret.

I stiffened, my senses sharpening. What did he mean?

Sydney was beside him, laughing at something he’d said, completely oblivious—or was she? My pulse quickened. My instincts told me he wasn’t just a man she liked, or even someone my instincts should disregard. He had secrets, layers beneath his calm demeanor, and every instinct screamed danger.

I needed to know.

---

I drifted along the periphery, a shadow in the crowd, eyes never leaving him. He leaned close to Sydney, speaking in hushed tones. His hand brushed hers just enough to draw my attention. A calculated touch, deliberate. And she responded, laughing, her eyes glinting with mischief.

I tightened my jaw. Interesting.

Andy spoke again, a cryptic remark this time. “Not everything is what it seems, you know. Sometimes, the ones closest to you hold the most dangerous truths.”

My blood ran cold. I froze mid-step. That remark… that wasn’t casual. He knew something. He knew something. And my mind immediately went to Sophie. That day, her death… the way it had been executed with precision. Could it be? Could this man know more than I realized?

---

I gritted my teeth, the weight of my suspicions pressing down on me. I had been working in Stallone Enterprises for months now, chasing leads, following dead ends, trying to find any clue about Sophie’s death. Every step I took, every trail I followed, felt like it ended in frustration. But this… this man could be the link I’d been searching for.

I had to watch, had to study, had to find out what he knew. I couldn’t confront him—not yet. Too risky. Sydney was here, and any wrong move could expose me.

And yet, a part of me burned with frustration. I wanted to step forward, to challenge him, to rip the secrets out of him. But I restrained myself. Patience, Alaric, patience.

---

As I moved closer, I caught a snippet of conversation from a group of reporters nearby.

“…did you see that? Sydney looked like she was flirting with both men at the same time!” one whispered.

I suppressed a chuckle, shaking my head slightly. Even amidst danger, the absurdity of the situation wasn’t lost on me. Sydney, my chaotic, relentless Sydney, had somehow managed to drag two men—one of whom might know dangerous truths—into a single room filled with flashing cameras and screaming reporters.

I glanced at her briefly. She was radiant, laughing at something Andy said, completely unaware of the storm brewing just beneath the surface. It was almost comical… if I ignored the fact that the man beside her might be more than a simple obstacle.

---

I decided to approach, moving with calculated ease, my presence unnoticed until I was close enough for Andy to feel it. He turned slightly, and our eyes met for a brief moment. There was no recognition, no outward acknowledgment, but the tension between us was palpable.

“I don’t know what you’re hiding,” I said softly, loud enough for him to hear but low enough to avoid drawing attention.

His expression flickered—interest, recognition, or perhaps a warning. I couldn’t tell. He tilted his head slightly, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Some things are meant to remain hidden,” he replied cryptically.

My pulse quickened. That tone. That smirk. That cryptic reply. It confirmed my suspicions—he knew more than he should.

---

I glanced at Sydney, her laughter cutting through my tension like a blade. She was blissfully unaware of the danger Andy posed—or maybe she sensed it and was simply too reckless to care. Either way, she was mine to protect. And if this man knew anything about Sophie, I wouldn’t allow him to manipulate her.

I took a slow breath, centering myself. I needed patience, strategy, and focus. I would observe Andy, track his movements, and uncover his secrets without alerting him—or Sydney.

And deep down, a thrill coursed through me, a dangerous, exhilarating spark. Because nothing in my long, cursed life had been as unpredictable or enticing as the chaos surrounding Sydney. And now, with this mysterious man in the picture, that chaos was about to escalate.

I clenched my fists, feeling the familiar pull of both rage and desire. Sydney’s heart might be mine to win, but this mysterious man… he was a threat.

And I wouldn’t rest until I uncovered everything.
