C1 The girl by the window

The morning sunlight spilled softly through the tall windows of Crestview High, scattering golden rays across rows of desks. The smell of chalk and faint perfume hung in the air as students filled the room, their laughter and chatter echoing off the walls.

But at the far end of the class — by the window where the light was calmest — sat Elena Ward. Quiet. Focused. Invisible to most.

She always chose that corner seat. It gave her a perfect view of the outside world — the blue sky, the passing birds, and sometimes, the basketball court where the school team practiced after class. Her hand moved gracefully over her sketchbook, pencil strokes bringing a half-drawn face to life.

Sharp jawline. Soft eyes. A slightly crooked smile.

She sighed. “Why am I drawing him again?” she whispered under her breath.

She didn’t have to say his name. She knew every line of that face too well.

Jayden Hale — captain of the Crestview Hawks, star athlete, and the boy everyone admired. He wasn’t just handsome; he had that careless, charming energy that made girls giggle and teachers shake their heads.

And for some reason, he had found a way into Elena’s quiet thoughts.

The bell rang. Students shuffled to their seats as Mr. Harris walked in, glasses sliding down his nose. “Alright, class. Take out your math homework,” he announced.

Elena quickly slid her sketchbook under her textbook and tried to focus. She told herself she wouldn’t look at Jayden. Not again.

But her resolve lasted barely five minutes.

He was two rows ahead, sitting with his usual group of friends — laughing at something one of them said, that dimpled smile lighting up his face. The sound of his laugh made her chest ache in a way she couldn’t explain.

And then it happened.

He turned.

Right at her.

For one heartbeat, their eyes met.

Elena froze. The world blurred at the edges — the laughter, the lessons, even the teacher’s voice faded.

Then Jayden smiled.

Not the teasing grin he flashed around the halls, but a soft, genuine one — as if he’d been watching her too.

Her pulse raced. She quickly looked away, pretending to scribble something in her notebook.

Did that really just happen?

“Miss Ward,” Mr. Harris’s voice snapped her back. “Care to share the answer to question three?”

Elena blinked. “Um…” She stared blankly at the board. “It’s—uh—thirty-seven?”

The class giggled. Mr. Harris sighed. “Close, but no. Try paying attention next time.”

Elena ducked her head, cheeks burning. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Jayden glance back again — this time, with an amused smirk.

Her heart thudded. She didn’t know if she wanted to disappear or smile back.

By lunchtime, she was still flustered.

She sat with her best friend, Sophie, at their usual corner of the cafeteria. Sophie was bubbly, fearless, and everything Elena wasn’t.

“You’re quiet today,” Sophie said, sipping her drink. “And don’t say ‘I’m fine.’ I can see your face glowing like a traffic light.”

Elena groaned. “Sophie…”

“Spill it,” Sophie demanded, leaning in. “Who’s got you looking like a walking daydream?”

Elena hesitated, tracing circles on her tray. “It’s… Jayden Hale.”

Sophie gasped dramatically. “The Jayden Hale? Basketball Jayden? Smile-that-melts-hearts Jayden?”

“Shh!” Elena hissed, looking around. “Someone will hear you!”

Sophie grinned. “Girl, half the school’s already crushing on him. It’s nothing new.”

“It’s not like that,” Elena muttered. “He just… smiled at me today.”

Sophie blinked. Then she started giggling uncontrollably. “He smiled at you and you’re acting like you just got proposed to!”

Elena tried to sound calm, but her voice came out small. “It wasn’t just any smile…”

Sophie softened. “Okay, fine. Maybe it meant something. You’re cute. And mysterious. Boys love that.”

Elena shook her head. “Jayden doesn’t even know I exist.”

“Wanna bet?” Sophie whispered suddenly, nodding behind Elena.

Elena turned — and froze.

Jayden Hale was standing a few feet away, his lunch tray balanced in one hand. His friends were at another table, but his eyes were on her.

“Hey,” he said casually. “You’re Elena, right?”

She blinked, stunned that he even knew her name. “Uh… yeah.”

He smiled again. “Mr. Harris went hard on you today. That question was impossible.”

Her cheeks flushed. “You were listening?”

“I sit two rows in front of you,” he said with a smirk. “Kind of hard not to.”

Sophie nudged her under the table, eyes wide.

Jayden nodded politely. “See you around, Elena.”

As he walked away, Sophie nearly squealed. “You see? He does know you exist!”

Elena couldn’t stop smiling the rest of lunch. Her heart wouldn’t calm down — like it was playing its own rhythm just for him.

After school, Elena stayed back to finish her art assignment. The classroom was quiet, sunlight glowing orange through the window.

She was erasing a stray line on her sketch when a voice startled her.

“Still drawing?”

She turned — Jayden again, leaning casually against the doorframe. His basketball bag hung over his shoulder, and his hair was slightly messy, like he’d just come from practice.

“Uh, yeah,” she said, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “It helps me think.”

He walked closer. “Can I see?”

Her hands trembled slightly as she turned the sketchbook around. The drawing wasn’t finished, but it was obviously him — his eyes, his jawline, that familiar half-smile.

Jayden blinked, then grinned. “Wow. You made me look better than real life.”

Elena’s face turned crimson. “I—I wasn’t—”

He laughed softly. “Relax, I’m flattered.”

There was something so warm about the way he said it that she forgot to breathe for a moment.

He glanced at the clock. “You walk home, right?”

She nodded.

“Cool,” he said, slinging his bag over his shoulder. “Mind if I walk with you?”

Elena’s eyes widened. “You want to—”

“Yeah,” he said simply, smiling. “You seem like someone worth walking home with.”

Her stomach fluttered as she packed her things. The two of them stepped out of the school together, the late afternoon sun painting everything gold.

For a while, they just walked in silence. It wasn’t awkward — just quiet, peaceful. Every few seconds, she’d steal a glance at him, and somehow, he’d always catch her looking.

“You know,” he said softly, “you have a nice smile.”

Elena blinked. “I wasn’t smiling.”

Jayden chuckled. “You were. Just now.”

She looked away, hiding her grin.

When they reached her street, he stopped. “So… I’ll see you tomorrow?”

“Yeah,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

He waved and turned away, but not before flashing that same smile — the one that started it all.

Elena stood there long after he’d gone, her heart thudding in her chest.

She didn’t know what this was.

A coincidence.

A crush.

Or something much, much deeper.

But one thing was certain — she would never forget the way Jayden Hale said her name that day.
