C10 Chapter Ten:Hearts on the court
The sound of squeaking sneakers, echoing whistles, and roaring cheers filled the Crestview gymnasium that Friday evening.
The Crestview Hawks were playing against Lincoln High, their biggest rivals, and the bleachers were overflowing. Students wore school colors, waving banners, chanting Jaydenâs name like he was already a legend.
âElena! Over here!â Sophie shouted, waving her hand from the middle row.
Elena climbed up the bleachers, heart thudding. She wasnât sure why she was so nervousâit wasnât her game, but watching Jayden always did something strange to her.
And this time, Noah was there too.
He stood by the sidelines, his jacket on, hands tucked in his pockets. He wasnât part of the team, but his quiet presence somehow drew as much attention as Jaydenâs showy confidence.
As the announcerâs voice boomed through the speakers, Jayden jogged onto the court in his blue-and-gold jerseyâNo. 7, captain of the Crestview Hawks. The crowd screamed, and he grinned, scanning the bleachers.
His eyes found Elena instantly.
Her breath hitched.
He smiledâquick, fleetingâbut it was for her and only her.
Sophie nudged her. âGirl, the boyâs gone. He just scanned the whole crowd for you.â
âSophie, stopââ
But she couldnât hide the flush in her cheeks.
⸝
The whistle blew.
The game began.
Jayden was fireâfast, focused, and impossibly good. Every pass, every jump shot was smooth, confident, magnetic. He played like someone with something to prove.
And tonight, that âsomethingâ wasnât just the game.
It was her.
At halftime, Crestview was leading by six points. The team huddled near the bench, sweat glistening on their faces. Jayden gulped water, glancing at the bleachers again. Elena waved shyly, and he couldnât stop the small smile tugging at his lips.
But the moment broke when a familiar voice came from behind.
âYouâre playing well,â Noah said calmly.
Jayden turned, eyes narrowing. âDidnât think you liked basketball.â
âI donât,â Noah replied. âBut I like her. And sheâs watching.â
Jayden stiffened. âWhat did you just say?â
Noahâs tone didnât rise, but his words cut clean. âYouâre showing off for Elena. Everyone can see it.â
Jayden clenched his jaw. âYou think you know whatâs between us?â
âI know she looks at you and gets confused,â Noah said, voice even. âBut when she looks at me, she remembers.â
Jayden stepped forward, tension sparking like electricity. âYou think walking her home gives you some kind of claim?â
âI donât need to claim her,â Noah replied, eyes steady. âShe already trusts me.â
âThen why is she watching me right now?â
For a second, neither spoke. The air between them was sharp, dangerous.
Coachâs whistle cut through it. âHale! Back on the court!â
Jayden tore his gaze away and jogged back toward the gameâbut his heartbeat wasnât for the scoreboard anymore.
It was for Elena.
And the boy who wouldnât stop getting between them.
⸝
The second half was chaos.
Jayden played like a stormâfaster, rougher, angrier. His teammates shouted for him to calm down, but he was too far gone. Every time the ball left his hands, his eyes flicked toward Elena, like she was the reason he couldnât miss.
âJayden! Focus!â the coach barked.
But he was focusedâon proving something.
The crowd cheered as he sank another three-pointer.
Crestview was winning by ten.
But inside, Jaydenâs chest was burning.
Then, in the final minute of the game, it happened.
Jayden was driving the ball toward the basket when Noah, whoâd stepped down from the bleachers, called out somethingâlow, sharp, enough to make Jaydenâs concentration snap.
He missed the shot.
The gym went silent.
Noah stepped forward, concern on his face. âJayden, calm downââ
âDonât tell me to calm down!â Jayden barked, dropping the ball and shoving him back. The gym erupted in gasps.
âJayden!â Elenaâs voice cut through the noise, but he barely heard it.
Noah straightened, his expression hardening. âYouâre losing control in front of everyone.â
âYou donât get to talk about control,â Jayden spat. âYou show up out of nowhere, act like you still matter to herââ
âI do matter,â Noah snapped. âI was there before you even noticed her.â
âAnd you left,â Jayden growled. âYou left her alone.â
The entire gym fell silent. The only sound was Jaydenâs ragged breathing.
Elena stood frozen by the bleachers, everyoneâs eyes darting between her and the two boys.
Jaydenâs voice dropped, low and raw. âYou can call me reckless, jealous, whateverâbut at least Iâm here. And Iâm not afraid to say it.â
He turned, eyes locking with Elenaâs.
His next words silenced the entire gym.
âIâm in love with you, Elena.â
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
Sophieâs hand flew to her mouth.
Noahâs eyes widened, disbelief flashing across his face.
Elena stood frozen, heart hammering so loud she could barely breathe.
Jaydenâs chest heaved. His voice cracked slightly, but he didnât care anymore. âYeah, I said it. I love you. And Iâm done pretending I donât.â
The coach tried to intervene. âHale, thatâs enoughââ
But it was too late. The truth was out.
The team. The crowd. The whole school.
Everyone knew.
Noah took a step forward, voice low but fierce. âYou think shouting it in front of everyone makes it real?â
Jaydenâs eyes flared. âNo. But at least I had the guts to say it.â
Before things could spiral further, the refereeâs whistle blared, ending the game. Crestview had technically wonâbut no one was cheering anymore.
Everyone was watching the drama unfolding on the court.
Jayden dropped the ball, running a shaky hand through his hair. He didnât even look at the scoreboard. He just looked at Elenaâhis expression softening into something broken, honest.
Then he turned and walked off the court, the crowd parting around him like waves.
Noah stood there, jaw tight, eyes following Jayden until he was gone.
Then his gaze shifted to Elena.
And in that silence, she felt her world tilt completely.
Because Jaydenâs confession wasnât just a spark anymore.
It was a wildfire.
And she was standing right in the center of it.
