C10 Chapter Ten:Hearts on the court

The sound of squeaking sneakers, echoing whistles, and roaring cheers filled the Crestview gymnasium that Friday evening.

The Crestview Hawks were playing against Lincoln High, their biggest rivals, and the bleachers were overflowing. Students wore school colors, waving banners, chanting Jayden’s name like he was already a legend.

“Elena! Over here!” Sophie shouted, waving her hand from the middle row.

Elena climbed up the bleachers, heart thudding. She wasn’t sure why she was so nervous—it wasn’t her game, but watching Jayden always did something strange to her.

And this time, Noah was there too.

He stood by the sidelines, his jacket on, hands tucked in his pockets. He wasn’t part of the team, but his quiet presence somehow drew as much attention as Jayden’s showy confidence.

As the announcer’s voice boomed through the speakers, Jayden jogged onto the court in his blue-and-gold jersey—No. 7, captain of the Crestview Hawks. The crowd screamed, and he grinned, scanning the bleachers.

His eyes found Elena instantly.

Her breath hitched.

He smiled—quick, fleeting—but it was for her and only her.

Sophie nudged her. “Girl, the boy’s gone. He just scanned the whole crowd for you.”

“Sophie, stop—”

But she couldn’t hide the flush in her cheeks.

⸝

The whistle blew.

The game began.

Jayden was fire—fast, focused, and impossibly good. Every pass, every jump shot was smooth, confident, magnetic. He played like someone with something to prove.

And tonight, that “something” wasn’t just the game.

It was her.

At halftime, Crestview was leading by six points. The team huddled near the bench, sweat glistening on their faces. Jayden gulped water, glancing at the bleachers again. Elena waved shyly, and he couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at his lips.

But the moment broke when a familiar voice came from behind.

“You’re playing well,” Noah said calmly.

Jayden turned, eyes narrowing. “Didn’t think you liked basketball.”

“I don’t,” Noah replied. “But I like her. And she’s watching.”

Jayden stiffened. “What did you just say?”

Noah’s tone didn’t rise, but his words cut clean. “You’re showing off for Elena. Everyone can see it.”

Jayden clenched his jaw. “You think you know what’s between us?”

“I know she looks at you and gets confused,” Noah said, voice even. “But when she looks at me, she remembers.”

Jayden stepped forward, tension sparking like electricity. “You think walking her home gives you some kind of claim?”

“I don’t need to claim her,” Noah replied, eyes steady. “She already trusts me.”

“Then why is she watching me right now?”

For a second, neither spoke. The air between them was sharp, dangerous.

Coach’s whistle cut through it. “Hale! Back on the court!”

Jayden tore his gaze away and jogged back toward the game—but his heartbeat wasn’t for the scoreboard anymore.

It was for Elena.

And the boy who wouldn’t stop getting between them.

⸝

The second half was chaos.

Jayden played like a storm—faster, rougher, angrier. His teammates shouted for him to calm down, but he was too far gone. Every time the ball left his hands, his eyes flicked toward Elena, like she was the reason he couldn’t miss.

“Jayden! Focus!” the coach barked.

But he was focused—on proving something.

The crowd cheered as he sank another three-pointer.

Crestview was winning by ten.

But inside, Jayden’s chest was burning.

Then, in the final minute of the game, it happened.

Jayden was driving the ball toward the basket when Noah, who’d stepped down from the bleachers, called out something—low, sharp, enough to make Jayden’s concentration snap.

He missed the shot.

The gym went silent.

Noah stepped forward, concern on his face. “Jayden, calm down—”

“Don’t tell me to calm down!” Jayden barked, dropping the ball and shoving him back. The gym erupted in gasps.

“Jayden!” Elena’s voice cut through the noise, but he barely heard it.

Noah straightened, his expression hardening. “You’re losing control in front of everyone.”

“You don’t get to talk about control,” Jayden spat. “You show up out of nowhere, act like you still matter to her—”

“I do matter,” Noah snapped. “I was there before you even noticed her.”

“And you left,” Jayden growled. “You left her alone.”

The entire gym fell silent. The only sound was Jayden’s ragged breathing.

Elena stood frozen by the bleachers, everyone’s eyes darting between her and the two boys.

Jayden’s voice dropped, low and raw. “You can call me reckless, jealous, whatever—but at least I’m here. And I’m not afraid to say it.”

He turned, eyes locking with Elena’s.

His next words silenced the entire gym.

“I’m in love with you, Elena.”

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd.

Sophie’s hand flew to her mouth.

Noah’s eyes widened, disbelief flashing across his face.

Elena stood frozen, heart hammering so loud she could barely breathe.

Jayden’s chest heaved. His voice cracked slightly, but he didn’t care anymore. “Yeah, I said it. I love you. And I’m done pretending I don’t.”

The coach tried to intervene. “Hale, that’s enough—”

But it was too late. The truth was out.

The team. The crowd. The whole school.

Everyone knew.

Noah took a step forward, voice low but fierce. “You think shouting it in front of everyone makes it real?”

Jayden’s eyes flared. “No. But at least I had the guts to say it.”

Before things could spiral further, the referee’s whistle blared, ending the game. Crestview had technically won—but no one was cheering anymore.

Everyone was watching the drama unfolding on the court.

Jayden dropped the ball, running a shaky hand through his hair. He didn’t even look at the scoreboard. He just looked at Elena—his expression softening into something broken, honest.

Then he turned and walked off the court, the crowd parting around him like waves.

Noah stood there, jaw tight, eyes following Jayden until he was gone.

Then his gaze shifted to Elena.

And in that silence, she felt her world tilt completely.

Because Jayden’s confession wasn’t just a spark anymore.

It was a wildfire.

And she was standing right in the center of it.
