C11 Chapter Eleven :The Morning After

The next morning, Crestview High buzzed louder than ever.

By the time Elena walked through the front doors, she already knew what awaited her — the stares, the whispers, the pointed glances from every corner of the hallway.

“Did you see it?”

“I can’t believe Jayden Hale said that!”

“Right there in front of everyone—he told Elena Ward he loves her!”

Her name floated through the halls like a secret gone viral.

Elena clutched her books tighter, her pulse racing. The moment replayed in her mind like an echo she couldn’t shut off — Jayden’s voice, raw and trembling, his eyes finding hers as the gym went silent.

“I’m in love with you, Elena.”

She had dreamt of hearing those words once — in the quiet of her heart — but never like that. Never with the whole school watching.

“Elena!”

Sophie appeared beside her, breathless and dramatic as always. “Girl, you’re basically trending. Everyone’s talking about you and Jayden!”

Elena groaned. “Don’t remind me.”

“I have to! Do you realize what happened yesterday? The Jayden Hale just confessed his love — publicly. Half the school is dying, and the other half is stalking your Instagram.”

“Sophie!”

Sophie grinned, though her eyes softened. “Okay, okay. Jokes aside — how are you holding up?”

Elena hesitated. “I don’t know. It doesn’t even feel real.”

Sophie sighed. “You know Noah’s not taking this well, right? He left right after you did yesterday. Didn’t even show up to the after-party.”

Elena looked down, guilt sinking in. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

“I know,” Sophie said gently. “But… maybe it was bound to. You can’t hide from feelings forever.”

By the time Elena reached her locker, the whispers had quieted — only because everyone nearby wanted to hear her.

A group of girls stood nearby, whispering not-so-quietly.

“She’s so quiet; who knew she could get the basketball captain?”

“Must be nice being mysterious.”

“Do you think it’s true, though? Maybe Jayden just said it to get attention.”

Elena’s hands trembled as she closed her locker. She didn’t turn around. She didn’t have to — the words already stung.

Then a familiar voice spoke, calm but edged. “You all done talking about her?”

Noah.

The girls froze. His tone wasn’t loud, but it carried enough authority to silence them instantly. They quickly scattered down the hall, pretending to be busy.

Elena turned. “Noah…”

He looked tired — dark circles under his eyes, his hair slightly messy. He forced a half-smile. “You okay?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted softly. “Everything feels… strange.”

“Yeah,” he said, voice low. “Yesterday was… something.”

Elena wanted to explain — to tell him she didn’t ask for any of it — but the look in his eyes stopped her. It wasn’t anger. It was hurt. Quiet, deep hurt.

“Noah—”

“Don’t,” he said gently. “You don’t have to explain. I just… wish he didn’t do it like that.”

Her chest tightened. “He didn’t mean to—”

“Didn’t he?” Noah asked. “He wanted the world to know he loves you. But he didn’t think about what that would do to you.”

Elena had no answer. Because deep down, she knew he was right.

Noah took a small step closer. “I’m not angry at you, Lena. I just don’t want to lose you again.”

His voice cracked slightly on the last word, and before she could respond, he turned and walked down the hall, leaving her standing there with a thousand unspoken words between them.

Later that day, Jayden sat alone in the gym.

The court was empty now — no crowd, no noise, no adrenaline. Just silence.

He spun a basketball slowly on his fingers, replaying last night in his mind.

The look on Elena’s face when he said it.

The way Noah had stared at him, like he’d just crossed a line that couldn’t be uncrossed.

He’d never meant to hurt her — but when he saw Noah standing there, acting like she belonged to him, something inside Jayden snapped. And the truth just spilled out.

“Guess that makes me an idiot,” he muttered to himself.

“Not an idiot,” came a familiar voice. “Just a guy who finally said what everyone already knew.”

He looked up. Sophie stood by the door, arms crossed. “You really shook up the school, you know.”

Jayden smirked weakly. “That bad, huh?”

“Let’s just say if Crestview had social media trends, you’d be the top one,” she said, walking over. “But… I think she needed to hear it. Even if it was messy.”

Jayden leaned against the wall, staring at the court lines. “She hasn’t talked to me since.”

“Give her time,” Sophie said. “Elena doesn’t process things fast. She feels everything, then hides it until she’s ready to break.”

He looked up, surprised by how well she understood her. “She told you that?”

“No,” Sophie smiled softly. “I just know her.”

For a moment, Jayden nodded, silent. Then he murmured, “I don’t regret saying it, though.”

“Even with everyone watching?”

He smiled faintly. “Especially with everyone watching.”

After school, the air outside was cool, soft sunlight fading through the trees.

Elena sat by the fountain in the courtyard, her sketchbook open but untouched. The page was blank.

She didn’t even notice when Jayden sat beside her — quiet, hesitant.

“I wasn’t sure you’d want to see me,” he said.

Elena didn’t look up. “Jayden… why did you say that? In front of everyone?”

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Because if I didn’t say it then, I never would’ve.”

“People won’t stop talking about it,” she whispered.

“Let them,” he said simply. “I don’t care what they say about me.”

“But they’re talking about me, too.”

That made him pause. For the first time, he looked unsure. “I didn’t mean to drag you into that.”

“I know,” she said softly. “But you did.”

Silence stretched between them, heavy but not cold. Then Jayden spoke again, voice low.

“When I saw you with him, I felt like everything I wanted was slipping away. I couldn’t help it, Elena. I couldn’t pretend anymore.”

Her throat tightened. “You can’t just say things like that.”

He looked at her, eyes searching. “Why not? You deserve to be told how special you are.”

Elena blinked, tears threatening. “Jayden…”

He reached out, brushing his thumb gently against her hand — a simple, trembling touch. “I’ll wait for you to figure out what you want. But I’m not going anywhere.”

And with that, he stood and walked away, leaving her sitting by the fountain — torn between two boys, two histories, and two kinds of love she didn’t understand yet.

As the sun dipped behind the school, Elena finally looked at her blank sketchbook and whispered,

“What if I’m not ready to choose?”

The breeze carried her words away, soft and uncertain.

But in her heart, she knew — the story between her, Jayden, and Noah was only just beginning.
