C15 The First Shadows
Crestview’s hallways looked brighter lately — or maybe it was just Elena.
Everywhere she went, people noticed the change. The shy girl who once hid behind her sketchbook now walked with her head a little higher. She still wasn’t loud, still wasn’t one of the popular ones — but she smiled more. And Jayden Hale was almost always somewhere nearby.
They weren’t a secret anymore.
He’d walk her to class, carry her books sometimes, and send her little notes folded into messy hearts. The girls who used to stare at him in awe now whispered behind their hands. Some rolled their eyes. Some smiled in envy.
Elena tried not to let it get to her. But sometimes, when she saw the way other girls looked at Jayden, her stomach twisted.
One of them — Amber Collins, the cheer squad’s co-captain — was especially hard to ignore.
Amber had known Jayden since freshman year, and she never hid how she felt about him. Every time Elena passed her in the hallway, she’d feel those perfectly lined eyes sizing her up, a smug little smile tugging at her glossed lips.
And when practice ended, Amber was always the first to run up to Jayden — offering water, laughing too loudly at his jokes, brushing his arm as if by accident.
At first, Elena tried to laugh it off.
But lately, it wasn’t funny anymore.
⸻
After school one afternoon, Elena waited by the gym door, sketchbook in hand. Practice had ended ten minutes ago, and the sound of sneakers had quieted down. But Jayden hadn’t come out yet.
She peeked inside. He was still on the court — talking to Amber.
Amber was smiling, twirling a strand of her blonde hair, and Jayden… was smiling too.
Something inside Elena tightened.
When he finally noticed her, his eyes lit up. “Hey, you waited!”
Amber turned, her expression unreadable. “Oh, hey, Elena,” she said sweetly. “Jayden was just telling me about Friday’s game.”
Elena forced a smile. “That’s nice.”
Amber’s gaze flickered between them before she shrugged. “Well, good luck, Jay. Don’t let me distract you.”
As she walked past, Elena caught the smirk she tried to hide.
Jayden sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “She’s harmless, you know.”
“I didn’t say she wasn’t,” Elena replied quietly.
“You’re upset.”
“I’m not,” she said too quickly.
He stepped closer, his hand brushing her arm. “Elena… you don’t have to worry about Amber. You’re the one I—”
“Jayden,” she interrupted softly, looking down. “You don’t have to say it again. I just… I don’t like the way she looks at you.”
He smiled faintly, cupping her cheek. “Then I’ll look at you instead.”
The words made her blush, but a part of her heart still ached.
Because even when he held her like that, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone — or something — was waiting to come between them.
⸻
The next few days, Jayden got busier.
Between basketball practice, school projects, and interviews with the local paper, Elena barely saw him.
He texted, but the messages were shorter.
The calls came later.
And when they talked, he always sounded tired.
Sophie noticed first. “You okay? You’ve been quiet lately.”
Elena forced a smile. “Just school stuff.”
But inside, she felt something else — a strange, creeping distance she didn’t know how to fix.
⸻
Friday came, and with it, another big game.
The stands were packed. The noise was deafening. Elena sat beside Sophie, clutching her hands together as she watched Jayden on the court — his focus sharp, his movements flawless.
He was perfect out there. Everyone could see it.
But her stomach twisted again when Amber ran up to him after the final buzzer, hugging him a little too long, her voice shrill with excitement.
Jayden laughed, and for a second, forgot Elena was even there.
That was the moment she felt it — that faint, invisible crack forming in her heart.
It wasn’t enough to break them. Not yet.
But it was enough to make her wonder if love alone was ever enough.

Lot of love 🤍
