C16 Cracks in the Sky

The sound of sneakers squeaking across polished floors echoed faintly down the halls of Crestview High. The air still buzzed with talk of last week’s basketball game — the one that had ended with Jayden’s triumphant shot and Noah’s quiet walk off the court.

And in the middle of it all was Elena Ward — the girl who somehow found herself standing between two hearts that both burned for her.

Yet for now, she was happy.

At least she wanted to believe she was.

Jayden had been different lately — softer, more open. He waited for her by the gate in the mornings, carried her sketchbooks without being asked, and texted her late into the night, sometimes just to say goodnight, sunshine.

It made her heart ache in that sweet, dizzying way love always does.

But at Crestview High, nothing stayed secret for long.

“Did you hear?”

“She’s totally using him.”

“Jayden Hale dating her? Please. She’s just after the attention.”

Elena heard the whispers before she saw the faces. A group of girls leaned against the lockers, whispering behind manicured hands as she passed by. Their eyes flicked up, sharp and judgmental.

She tried to ignore it. Tried to smile.

But the words clung to her like cold rain.

When she reached her locker, Sophie was waiting. “You okay? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

“People are talking again,” Elena murmured, staring at the floor.

Sophie frowned. “Let me guess — about Jayden?”

Elena nodded. “They think I’m… with him for the attention.”

Sophie’s eyes softened. “You know that’s not true. Jayden knows it too.”

“Still,” Elena whispered, “it hurts. I never wanted this kind of spotlight.”

Just then, laughter echoed down the hallway. Jayden, surrounded by his teammates, was heading their way — charming as ever, his grin lighting up the corridor.

The moment he spotted her, his stride slowed.

“Hey, you,” he said softly when he reached her, leaning one hand against the locker beside hers.

Her heart skipped, like it always did. “Hey.”

He noticed her expression immediately. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” she lied quickly. “Just tired.”

Jayden tilted his head, studying her. “You’re lying.”

Before she could answer, a few voices called out from behind him —

“Hey, Hale! Guess your girl’s too shy to cheer for you now?”

“Careful, bro, she might be in it for the fame!”

Jayden’s jaw tightened. His friends chuckled, not realizing how their words cut.

He turned sharply. “Shut up, Evan.”

The laughter faded, but the damage lingered. Elena’s stomach twisted. She hated being the reason for his temper.

He turned back to her, softer now. “Ignore them, okay?”

She tried to smile. “I’m fine. Really.”

But Jayden saw through her — he always did.

By lunch, the tension had only grown.

Whispers. Glances. The endless hum of rumors.

Elena sat quietly at their usual table, pushing food around her tray. Jayden tried to lighten the mood, joking with his teammates, but his eyes kept flicking toward her — worried, searching.

And then Noah walked in.

It had been days since he’d properly talked to her. The look in his eyes when he saw her sitting beside Jayden was unreadable — a mix of longing and something sharper.

He didn’t head for his own table. He walked straight toward them.

Jayden noticed. His smile faded.

Noah stopped by the table, his voice low but firm. “Elena, can we talk?”

Jayden stood up slightly. “She’s with me right now.”

Noah’s gaze hardened. “I’m not talking to you.”

The cafeteria went silent. Dozens of heads turned.

Elena’s heart pounded. “Noah, please—”

But he wasn’t backing down. “I’m tired of watching you hurt her, Hale. She’s not built for this kind of pressure. The gossip, the attention — you know it’s tearing her apart.”

Jayden stepped closer. “You think I don’t see that? I’m doing my best.”

“Your best isn’t enough,” Noah shot back. “You can’t protect her from the world you dragged her into.”

The crowd murmured. Sophie whispered, “Oh, no…”

Jayden’s voice was low, dangerous. “You’ve got no idea what’s between us.”

“Maybe not,” Noah said, “but I know her heart — and I know she deserves better than rumors and fights.”

Something in Jayden snapped. He shoved Noah lightly in the chest. “You want to play hero? Stay out of this.”

Noah pushed back harder. “Not when she’s crying because of you.”

“Elena,” Jayden said, voice breaking slightly, “tell him. Tell him you want me.”

Her lips parted. Her mind spun. Everyone was watching — friends, teachers, the entire cafeteria.

She looked between the two boys — one, her past; the other, her heart.

Her voice trembled, but she said it anyway.

“I love you, Jayden.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Jayden froze — disbelief flickering into relief, then something deeper.

Noah stood still for a moment, his eyes clouded with heartbreak. He gave a faint, pained nod, then turned and walked away.

Elena’s chest ached as Jayden pulled her close, his hand trembling slightly against her back.

“You shouldn’t have said that here,” she whispered, voice small against his shoulder.

He smiled weakly. “I didn’t make you say it.”

She looked up, her eyes shimmering. “I meant it. I just… didn’t want to hurt him like that.”

Jayden brushed a thumb across her cheek. “I know. But I’ve wanted to hear you say those words for so long.”

For the first time that day, she smiled. But deep down, a quiet fear lingered — the feeling that something fragile between them had just begun to crack.

Outside, clouds gathered above Crestview. The sound of distant thunder rolled across the sky — soft, uncertain, like a warning.
