C17 When the Heart Trembles

The news spread through Crestview High faster than wildfire.

By the next morning, everyone knew what had happened in the cafeteria — how Elena Ward had said I love you to Jayden Hale in front of the entire school.

Whispers followed her everywhere.

“She said it first?”

“Bold move.”

“I thought she liked that other guy, Noah?”

“Maybe she’s just playing them both.”

Every hallway felt like a tunnel of stares and murmurs. Even the teachers glanced her way longer than usual.

Elena tried to act unfazed, but the truth was — every word, every look, every passing laugh chipped away at her.

She wished she could disappear.

⸝

“Hey,” a familiar voice said softly behind her locker door.

She turned. Jayden.

He looked tired — not physically, but emotionally. His usual playful grin was replaced by a quiet concern that made her heart ache.

“You okay?” he asked gently.

She gave a small nod. “Just tired of being the headline.”

Jayden sighed and leaned against the locker beside hers. “I hate that people can’t just let us be.”

“They won’t,” she whispered. “Not here.”

His hand brushed hers. “Then let them talk. I don’t care what they think — I care about you.”

Her lips trembled into a small smile. “You always say that like it’s easy.”

He tilted his head. “Maybe because when it comes to you, it is.”

Something inside her softened. He meant it — she could see it in his eyes.

Still, the world outside their bubble felt louder every day.

⸝

At lunch, Sophie was already at their usual spot, scrolling through her phone. “You two are trending,” she said, showing them a group chat filled with screenshots and memes.

Elena groaned. “Oh God…”

Jayden looked annoyed. “People really have nothing better to do.”

“Hey,” Sophie warned, “don’t go picking fights. The last thing you need is detention again.”

Jayden’s jaw clenched. “I’m not gonna start anything.”

But as if on cue, a group of basketball players at the next table laughed loudly.

“Yo, Hale! Love confession of the year, man!”

“Better watch out, she might dump you next week for your rival!”

Jayden’s fists curled.

Elena reached out, grabbing his hand under the table. “Please. Don’t.”

His shoulders relaxed a little, but the fire in his eyes didn’t fade.

⸝

Later that day, after practice, Elena waited outside the gym for him.

The sun was setting — golden light spilling through the chain-link fence.

She watched the team disperse, laughing and joking as they left. Then Jayden came out, towel draped over his shoulders, shirt clinging to his skin from sweat.

“Hey,” she greeted softly.

He smiled faintly. “You waited for me?”

“Yeah,” she said, “I wanted to walk home with you.”

His expression softened again. “You always know how to make my day better.”

They walked in silence for a while, the sound of crickets filling the air.

But even in the quiet, Elena could feel it — the tension, the unspoken weight of everything happening around them.

“Jayden…” she began hesitantly.

He glanced at her. “Yeah?”

“Do you ever… wonder if this is too much? All of it — the gossip, the attention, Noah—”

He stopped walking. “Don’t say his name right now, Elena.”

Her voice faltered. “He’s still my friend.”

Jayden’s expression tightened. “He’s in love with you.”

“And you think I don’t know that?” she snapped before she could stop herself. “I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t plan to fall for you. But I did — and now it feels like the whole world’s against us.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Jayden sighed, raking a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry. I just… I get jealous, okay? I see him looking at you and I can’t stand it.”

Elena’s heart ached at the vulnerability in his voice. “I don’t want to lose you over something so small.”

“You won’t,” he said, his tone softening. “But you need to know… I’m not perfect, Elena. Sometimes I get scared — scared that one day you’ll realize you deserve someone better.”

She blinked, tears threatening. “Don’t ever say that.”

He stepped closer, cupping her face gently. “Then promise me you won’t give up on us — no matter what they say.”

“I promise,” she whispered.

And then he kissed her.

It wasn’t fiery or rushed — it was slow, aching, and full of everything they couldn’t say.

The world around them faded — no rumors, no judgment, just the sound of his heartbeat against hers.

When they finally pulled apart, Elena rested her head against his chest. “Maybe love isn’t supposed to be easy.”

Jayden smiled faintly. “Maybe not. But with you, it’s worth it.”

She closed her eyes, letting herself believe those words.

For now, that was enough.

⸝

But what neither of them noticed was Noah — standing across the street, a forgotten backpack slung over his shoulder, watching them quietly.

His eyes lingered on the way Jayden brushed a strand of hair from her face, the way she smiled up at him like nothing else in the world mattered.

And in that silent moment, Noah knew — he wasn’t ready to let go.

Not yet.

Lot of love 🤍
