C2 Chapter Two:The Boy Who Came Back
The next morning, Crestview High felt different.
Maybe it was the golden light spilling through the glass doors, or maybe it was the memory of Jayden Hale’s smile still playing on repeat in Elena’s head.
She walked down the hallway clutching her sketchbook to her chest, trying to look calm even though her heart was fluttering like a secret she couldn’t hide. Every time she blinked, she could still see him — his messy hair, that easy grin, the way his voice sounded when he said her name.
“Earth to Elena,” Sophie’s voice chimed, snapping her out of her daydream. “You’ve been smiling since we left homeroom. Should I call the doctor?”
Elena rolled her eyes, cheeks pink. “I’m fine.”
Sophie smirked. “Fine? You’re glowing. I’ve seen light bulbs dimmer than you.”
Before Elena could respond, the hallway suddenly erupted with noise — whispers, laughter, footsteps rushing toward the notice board near the office.
“What’s going on?” Sophie asked, tugging at a passing student.
“New transfer student,” the girl said. “Apparently, he’s kind of… hot.”
Sophie raised her brows. “New guy alert.” Then she turned to Elena. “Bet he’s not as dreamy as your Jayden.”
Elena blushed deeper. “He’s not my—”
But her words caught in her throat when she saw him.
Standing by the office door, talking to the principal, was a tall boy in a gray hoodie and dark jeans. His posture was relaxed, his expression calm — but when he turned, Elena’s breath hitched.
Those eyes.
She knew those eyes.
“Noah?” she whispered.
The boy looked up at the sound of his name, scanning the crowd — and then, their gazes met.
For a second, time folded in on itself.
“Elena?” His voice was a mixture of surprise and disbelief.
Sophie blinked between them. “Wait, you two know each other?”
Elena nodded slowly, her heart pounding. “He’s… my childhood friend. We grew up on the same street before he moved away.”
Noah smiled — the same gentle, boyish smile she remembered from years ago. “Guess I’m back.”
He walked over, his presence grounding yet unfamiliar, like a piece of her past returning in grown-up form.
“I can’t believe you’re here,” she said softly. “You didn’t tell me you were coming back.”
“It all happened fast,” he said. “Dad got transferred back to town, and… well, I’m here now. Same school, same sky — just older, I guess.”
Sophie elbowed her playfully. “Wow, childhood friend and surprise reunion? Girl, this sounds like a drama waiting to happen.”
Elena smiled nervously. “Don’t start.”
But inside, her emotions tangled.
Just yesterday, her heart had been racing for Jayden Hale — the boy who made her blush under the sunlight.
And now, Noah was back — the boy who once held her hand when they were eight and afraid of thunder.
The bell rang, and as students scattered toward class, Noah grinned. “Save me a seat in math, yeah?”
Elena nodded automatically, watching him walk down the hall. Her chest felt tight — not in a bad way, but in the way old memories press against the present, whispering that something is about to change.

By lunch, the cafeteria buzzed with curiosity. The new transfer boy had already become the topic of a dozen conversations — “He’s cute,” “He’s polite,” “He looks like he could model.”
Sophie was practically glowing with excitement. “Everyone’s talking about your childhood friend, Elena. Who knew you had a secret connection to Crestview’s new heartthrob?”
Elena groaned. “He’s just Noah.”
“Yeah,” Sophie teased, “and I’m just Beyoncé.”
Before Elena could reply, a familiar voice cut through the chatter.
“Hey, Elena.”
Jayden Hale stood beside their table, one hand resting on the back of a chair. His presence drew eyes instantly — the golden boy with the confident smirk.
“Hey,” Elena said softly, feeling her pulse quicken.
“Coach wants me to help with the art fair setup after school,” Jayden said. “You’re in the art club, right?”
She nodded. “Yeah, I am.”
“Cool,” he said with a grin. “Guess we’ll be working together.”
Sophie’s mouth fell open. “Oh, this just keeps getting better,” she whispered dramatically.
Before Elena could recover from that surprise, another voice joined the mix.
“Elena,” Noah called from across the cafeteria, tray in hand. “Mind if I sit here?”
The air stilled for a moment.
Jayden’s gaze shifted to Noah — curious, assessing.
Noah’s calm eyes met his, equally steady.
Elena’s stomach fluttered nervously. She could almost feel the invisible thread tightening between the three of them — past, present, and something uncertain in between.
Sophie leaned over and whispered, “Oh, girl… this is about to get interesting.”
Elena just stared at her tray, her heart pounding. She didn’t know it yet, but that lunch was the beginning of everything — the start of a story where love would no longer stay a secret.
