C3 Chapter Three:Between the Lines of a Smile

The afternoon sun shimmered across Crestview High’s courtyard as students hurried out, their laughter echoing through the hallways. Elena lingered near the art room, clutching her sketchbook and trying to slow the rhythm of her heartbeat.

She told herself she wasn’t nervous. That working with Jayden Hale was no big deal.

But her trembling hands said otherwise.

Inside the art room, tables were pushed aside, paint bottles stacked neatly, and boxes labeled ART FAIR MATERIALS were waiting to be unpacked. Jayden was already there — sleeves rolled up, his hair slightly messy, a smudge of white paint on his hand.

He looked up when she entered. “Hey, Elena.”

Her heart jumped. “Hey.”

“You came,” he said, smiling. “I was worried you’d change your mind.”

“I said I’d help.”

“I know,” he replied softly, eyes lingering on her a little too long. “Still… glad you did.”

Elena set her bag down, trying not to blush as she reached for the paintbrushes. They worked quietly for a while — cutting banners, sketching outlines, and arranging easels. Every now and then, their hands brushed, and every time, Elena felt her pulse skip.

“Your drawings are amazing,” Jayden said suddenly, watching her sketch a flower on one of the posters.

“Thanks,” she murmured. “I’ve been practicing for a long time.”

“You should join the design team for the basketball posters,” he said. “Ours look boring compared to this.”

She giggled softly. “Maybe.”

Their eyes met again — this time, it wasn’t a glance. It was a moment. The kind that made everything else fade.

Just then, the door creaked open.

“Elena.”

The voice was calm, familiar — Noah. He leaned against the doorframe, his backpack slung casually over one shoulder. His gaze shifted from Elena to Jayden, reading the air in a heartbeat.

“Oh,” Jayden said, breaking the silence. “You’re the new guy, right? Noah?”

“Yeah,” Noah said, walking in. “Heard you needed help with setup.”

Jayden’s lips curved slightly. “We’ve got it covered. But sure — the more, the merrier.”

Elena could feel the tension rise like invisible smoke between them. She tried to smile, hoping to soften it.

Noah moved closer, picking up a stack of canvases. “So, Elena,” he said quietly, “still drawing like you used to?”

She nodded, her voice gentle. “Yeah. I never stopped.”

Jayden glanced between them. “You two go way back, huh?”

“Since we were kids,” Noah said, his tone calm but firm. “We used to do everything together.”

Elena froze, unsure how to respond. Jayden only nodded, but there was a flicker in his eyes — something almost protective.

For the rest of the afternoon, the three of them worked side by side. Laughter came and went, but under it was something deeper — the start of an unspoken rivalry neither of them would admit.

When the sun dipped low and the hallways turned quiet, Jayden wiped his hands and turned to Elena. “You heading home?”

“Yeah,” she said, glancing at Noah, who was packing his bag.

Jayden hesitated. “Want me to walk you again?”

Before she could answer, Noah spoke. “I can walk her. We live in the same direction.”

The room went silent.

Jayden looked at Elena — not angry, but disappointed. “Right. Maybe next time, then.” He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “See you tomorrow.”

Elena watched him leave, her heart caught somewhere between two familiar beats — the warmth of yesterday and the comfort of years ago.

Noah walked beside her as they stepped into the fading sunlight. For a while, neither spoke. Then, softly, he said,

“You’ve changed, Lena. But… you still smile the same way.”

She looked at him, her chest tightening. “You remember that?”

He smiled faintly. “I remember everything.”

And just like that, the quiet walk home didn’t feel simple anymore. It felt like the past had come back — and it was quietly asking for space in her heart.
