C5 Chapter Five:The Distance Between Us
The next morning, the world felt heavy with the scent of rain.
Puddles glimmered under the soft sunrise, and the grass outside Crestview shimmered like glass.
Elena stood at her locker, her hair still a little damp from last night. She hadnât planned to walk home with Jayden â it just happened. The way heâd held the umbrella over both of them, close enough for her to hear the steady rhythm of his heartbeat⌠it had left her sleepless.
She traced her fingers along the spine of her sketchbook, lost in thought.
Why does it feel so different when Iâm with him?
âElena.â
Her heart jumped at the sound of her name. She turned â and there he was.
Noah.
He looked the same, yet not. His dark hair was messier than usual, and his smile didnât quite reach his eyes.
âHey,â she said softly. âYouâre early.â
âYeah,â he replied, shoving his hands into his jacket pockets. âI wanted to walk with you today⌠but I guess someone else already did that yesterday.â
Her breath caught. âNoahââ
He let out a quiet laugh, not cruel, not angry â just tired. âYou donât have to explain. I saw you.â
Elenaâs stomach sank. âIt wasnât like that. It started raining andââ
âI know.â His voice was gentle, but something in his eyes ached. âHeâs⌠different, isnât he?â
Elena hesitated. âJaydenâs justââ
âJust what?â Noah asked, his tone almost a whisper. âAnother reason youâll forget me again?â
The words hit her like a chill.
âNoah, I could never forget you,â she said, her voice trembling. âYouâreâ youâve always been important to me.â
He smiled faintly. âJust not the one youâre thinking about anymore.â
Before she could answer, the bell rang, echoing sharply through the hallway. Noah gave her one last look â a mixture of longing and quiet hurt â then turned and walked away.
Elena stood frozen, her heart torn clean in two.

In class, the tension only grew heavier. Jayden sat a few seats away, stealing glances when he thought she wasnât looking. When their eyes met, he offered that same soft smile â the one that made her pulse race.
But this time, guilt crept in alongside it.
She could still see Noahâs face in her mind, his eyes dimming when he looked at her.
âHey,â Jayden murmured as class ended, catching up to her by the door. âYou okay? You seem⌠quiet.â
Elena forced a small smile. âIâm fine. Just tired.â
He studied her for a moment. âYou sure?â
She nodded quickly. âThanks again for yesterday.â
âAnytime.â His voice softened. âI meant what I said â youâre someone worth walking with.â
Her heart fluttered, but she quickly turned away before he could see her blush.
Outside the window, Noah stood near the benches, waiting â not for her, but for the rain to wash away whatever he was feeling.

Lunch was quieter than usual. Sophie talked non-stop about weekend plans, but Elena barely heard her. Her eyes kept drifting between two tables â Jaydenâs, full of laughter and light, and Noahâs, where he sat alone, sketching absentmindedly in a notebook.
It hurt to see him like that.
Finally, she stood. âIâll be right back.â
Sophie blinked. âGoing to him?â
Elena nodded. âI have to.â
She crossed the cafeteria, her steps small but determined. Noah didnât look up until her shadow fell over the table.
âHey,â she said quietly.
He smiled faintly. âHey.â
âI didnât mean to hurt you,â she said, her voice soft. âYouâre still my best friend, Noah. You always will be.â
He closed the notebook, meeting her eyes. âThatâs the problem, Elena. Maybe I donât want to be just your best friend anymore.â
Her breath caught. âNoahâŚâ
He stood, slinging his bag over his shoulder. âI think Iâve waited long enough to say that.â
Then he walked away â leaving her standing there, stunned, her heart echoing with the sound of his truth.
Across the room, Jayden watched silently â his jaw tense, eyes shadowed.
For the first time, he realized Noah Blake wasnât just any boy.
He was the one she used to love.
