C17 His Tolerance
Wasn't that man supposed to have gone home with Ye Ziyan?
Ye Tian was baffled as the car came to a stop beside her. The man rolled down the window and commanded in a tone that brooked no argument, "Get in."
Eagerly, Ye Tian opened the door and climbed in. As the car's heater blasted warm air, she sneezed violently.
The disdain in the man's eyes was unmistakable. Ye Tian offered an embarrassed smile, "What's the matter, Director Gu? Didn't you spend a romantic evening with your little lotus darling?"
The term "little lotus darling" was, of course, a reference to Ye Ziyan.
Gu Qinian could detect the derogatory undertone in Ye Tian's description and his brow furrowed slightly, "A dog's mouth can't spit out ivory."
Ye Tian huffed and turned her head away, her thoughts in a whirl. She didn't want to stoop to bickering with this man—it would only show her pettiness!
As the car ventured further, Ye Tian suddenly felt grateful to have encountered Gu Qinian; otherwise, who knows how long it would have taken her to get inside.
Upon opening the door, the whole building was ablaze with light. Unable to bear the cold any longer, Ye Tian darted inside. Though Gu Qinian was clearly irked, he kept silent. Did this woman really think she could just waltz in and act like the lady of the house?
Ye Tian didn't bother with formalities. The first floor was all guest rooms; it didn't matter which one she chose. "Good night," she said.
After a casual wave to the man, Ye Tian shut the door firmly and collapsed onto the bed.
Her nose was completely congested, and even in a new bed, she couldn't sleep well. Ye Tian woke up early, drew back the curtains, and saw the faint light of dawn outside. After a moment's thought, she got out of bed.
The lights throughout the house were still blazing. Muttering about the waste of national resources, Ye Tian tiptoed into the kitchen.
She had skipped dinner the night before and hunger had roused her from sleep.
With her stomach growling, Ye Tian rifled through the fridge. Thankfully, someone shopped for groceries daily, so the contents were fresh and plentiful. She grabbed an egg and fired up the stove. Remembering there was another one upstairs, she fetched it too.
Cooking wasn't her forte, but frying an egg was well within her capabilities.
She popped slices of bread into the toaster and set a pot of milk to heat. The eggs were slightly burnt at the edges, but Ye Tian heaped praise on herself, declaring her culinary skills nothing short of miraculous.
Basking in her self-satisfaction, Ye Tian spun around and nearly jumped out of her skin at the sight of Gu Qinian. The cup in her hand teetered perilously close to the floor.
She shot him a glare. "What are you, a ghost? You move so silently."
Gu Qinian paid her no mind, his gaze fixed on the omelet in the pan, his brow furrowed in disapproval.
Could that charred mess even be considered food?
Ye Tian, as if reading his mind, huffed, "With your refined palate, I wouldn't dare let my humble cooking offend your taste buds!"
Despite her words, Ye Tian went ahead and prepared two servings.
Whether he would eat it or not was beside the point; she had done her part.
In a show of courtesy, Gu Qinian graciously downed the only palatable item, the milk, while skillfully avoiding the overcooked omelet and the toast turned to charcoal.
"Do we have any appointments this morning?" inquired Gu Qinian.
Suspicion etched on her face, Ye Tian wondered what scheme the old fox was concocting now. Was he expecting her to apologize for yesterday's incident with Ye Ziyan?
"We're going to the hospital," Gu Qinian stated, sidestepping her confusion without further explanation.
The hospital? Was it related to his grandfather?
Without further questioning, Ye Tian accompanied Gu Qinian to the hospital.
"Director Gu," greeted a dignified middle-aged doctor, extending his hand to Gu Qinian.
"Good day, Professor," Ye Tian greeted in return, bowing slightly to the doctor, recognizing him as the expert Gu Qinian had mentioned.
Recalling Gu Qinian's phone call from the night before, Ye Tian wondered if he had intended to bring her along to the hospital.
She pondered whether he could truly be that thoughtful.
Regardless, she owed Gu Qinian her gratitude.
