C5 Know Your Place

Regina was stunned for a moment, and her eyes darkened intensely. She slowly leaned against Kieran, pouting. "I was wrong last night for disturbing you and Teresa. Can you ask her to stay and have breakfast with us? Just...I just wanted to apologize to her."

Apologize?

Shameless! It seemed that as long as she acted cute and piteous, she could have anyone wrapped around her finger. Even my husband.

Initially, Kieran was indifferent to my words and appearance. However, as soon as he heard Regina's words, he gazed up at me. "Let's eat together."

His tone made no room for excuses.

Was I hurt? Yes, but I was used to it.

"All right."

It's not like I could reject his request. Even if there was a choice, I'd still sit beside him and eat. After all, I could never let go of him that easily, not after he had taken my heart.

I glanced around. This was my first time eating with him in the last two years. The dishes were ordinary—a plate of fried eggs and a bowl of porridge. However, it still felt different. It was Kieran who had cooked all of these.

"You should try his fried eggs! They smell so good," Regina said kindly, placing the egg on top of my rice. "He used to fry them a lot for me when we were younger."

Just then, she turned to him. "Kieran, you promised to accompany me to Nanjing to see the flowers. You can't go back on your promise."

"I won't." He had always been a man of few words, but when it came to Regina, he always attended to her needs.

Schaffer seemed to be used to their banter as he ate his breakfast silently.

I lowered my gaze. Today was his grandfather's funeral. If he had left with Regina today, then what face would I show to the Juarez Family?

After a few more bites, I spotted Kieran already finishing up his bowl from the corner of my eye. He got up, and I soon followed. We had to talk about this.

We walked into his bedroom when he stopped.

"What's the matter?"

He took his shirt as if there was no one else in the room. Instinctively, I turned around. "It's Grandfather's funeral."

There was a sound of rustling and squeaking when he replied, "Then you can go."

"He's your grandfather." He was the eldest son of the Juarez family. Shouldn't he be there? What would the rest of his family think?

"I've already asked David to take care of the burial. If there are any other concerns during the procession, you may speak to him." He was calm as if someone had just asked him about the weather.

Just as he was about to walk into his study, I snapped, "Is everyone truly that replaceable to you? Is Regina the only one you care about? Do you even know what family means?"

There was silence. A few seconds later, he turned—his eyes were cold and his mouth was set in a thin line. "The Juarez Family affair isn't something you should be meddling with."

"Do you really think you're worthy enough to order me around? Have you forgotten your place?"

His words were like a bucket of cold water. My entire being froze as I stared at him.

Only when he had left did I laugh bitterly.

Not worthy.

I guess that was all I was to him.

Never worthy.

"I thought you were just shameless, but I never imagined you to meddle in other people's business."

I turned around to see Regina leaning against the doorframe with her arms crossed. The cute and innocent expression she had worn was long gone.
