C9 Let's Make a Bet

I simply nodded in agreement.

To me, following through with Kieran's demands became a habit.

The car drove into the city. At first, I had assumed that Kieran would send me back into the villa, but he took me straight to the hospital.

The smell of anti-bacterial gel and disinfectant wafted across every corner of the room. My nose scrunched up in distaste, but I didn't say a word. Instead, I followed after Kieran.

Regina was on an infusion. She appeared sick and delicate as if she had not been snapping at her a few hours ago. Her eyes were clear, looking as if she had just cried.

As soon as she saw me, her face froze. "I don't want to see her."

The innocence disappeared from her gaze. It was the same look she had used to me when she fell. I took a deep breath.

Kieran walked toward her and lifted her up from the bed. He rubbed his chin against her forehead. "Let her take care of you for a few days. It's what she should do."

Ah.

Regina wanted to say something against him, but suddenly, she smiled. "Fine, I'll listen to you."

They really decided my fate.

I was standing there, and they acted as if I was nothing more than a piece of furniture.

Kieran was busy. While he hadn't attended the old man's funeral, he was still a member of the Juarez Family. There were many things that had gone through him. He didn't have time to stay in the hospital and take care of her.

That's why he left the job to me.

That night, I didn't sleep much. How could I when there was only one chair right next to the bed? It was obvious that I had no say in this matter. I sat there and watched her sleep.

Around 2 AM, she finally looked up at me. "You really are too selfless."

Hearing this, I took a deep breath. "Isn't love too selfless?"

She smiled. "Aren't you tired?"

Tired? Was I? Not really. All I ever did was fall in love with someone.

"Can you get me a glass of water?"

I nodded and went over to pour her a cup of water.

"There's no need to add cold water. Just heat it up for me." There wasn't any emotion that could be heard from her voice.

"You know," she continued. "I feel really sorry for you. I don't really blame you for what happened to the baby, but...in a way, I think I also blame you for starting all of this."

"Just be careful of the heat," I reminded her, handing her the water.

Regina took the cup of water. However, just as I was about to head back, she quickly pulled me even closer. "Why don't we make a bet?" Her snide tone returned. "Let's see if his heart will make it after this."

"I—" Just then, I see someone standing by the door frame. There was a man at the door.

I didn't say a thing as he poured boiling hot water down my hand. My blood froze as heat ate me whole. It was like I was being bitten by a thousand ants.

They betted on this.

Regina gasped. "I'm so sorry. I didn't do it on purpose. Are you okay?"

How fake!

I retracted my hand. "I'm fine."
