I collected the drink and downed everything inside it

"Here another glass" father said as he gave me another glass

"A brave girl you've got there Michele"

someone remarked

I smiled at them as I worked into the kitchen, I met mom and her friends laughing and eating

Mom's face lit up when she saw me

"Hey baby you're back I've been looking all over from you, where have you been?? "She asked concerned

"Umm... I was at the river enjoying the cool breeze "

"Cmon "she said as she dragged me into a quiet room

"Did you give your father any money?? "

I shook my head in negativity

"Where'd he get that huge amount of money from?? "

"What money?? " I asked confused

She pulled me into the basement and lifted open a metal box

There it was loads of money, I mean new currency

A scream escaped my lips

Mother quickly clamped her hands on my mouth

"Shush, I hope your father didn't rob a bank, I asked him when he showed me the money he said he's bet paid off "

"Hold on mother let me go to the pub and ask Derrick I'm sure he'd know "

As I turned to leave mother held me back

"I'm scared Ava " she said shakily as tears flowed from her eyes

I led her to sit and crouched

"Listen to me mom nothing will happen, just flow along with the party I'll be back in a jiffy "

"Be careful Ava "

"Trust me mom" I winked at her as I turned to leave

I ran all the way to the bar, I met Derrick standing outside smoking away angrily

"Hey Derrick " I greeted nervously

"What're You doing here "he growled angrily

"Quit being so mean I'm only here to ask a few questions about my father "

"Tell that wretched father of yours that once I'm done with him he'll stop trying to mess with me"

"What happened?? "

"He didn't take permission from me and he went ahead to host a party and now all my customers are gone "he raved angrily

"Cmon Derrick that's nothing to be angry at"

He glared at me

"Alright alright I'm sorry I'll tell him, but first can I ask you something?? "

"What is it" he asked impatiently

"Okay.... Did my father's bet pay off today"

He looked at me for a long time before he burst into a hard laugh

I looked at him in confusion wondering what's amusing him

"Okay I'm sorry about that, your father's bet has never paid off before "he said bursting into another bout of laughter

I muttered as I turned to leave

"Wait why are you asking?? "

"Its nothing "

"I could help you, you know "

I stopped dead in my tracks he's right

"Cmon in" he said smiling widely

Oops this is the first time I'll see Derrick smiling

I explained every single detail to him while he listened with rapt attention

"Okay... That explains why he threw a party right "

I nodded

"Alright go home I'll look into it myself and get back to you "

"Phew thanks Derrick you're a life saver"

"Anything for you kiddo now hurry home its late"

I smiled at him as I made my way outside

I smiled to myself as I watched her run off such a vibrant young kid

She reminds me of when I was younger, I sighed as I forced the thought of my childhood life out of my mind

"What'd You find?? "

"Boss he's throwing a big party in his house"

"Hmm, he thinks he can play on my intelligence right "

"There's lotta food and drinks for everyone "

"What else did you find out?? "

"Nothing boss"

"Alright you might take your leave now"

"I'll deal with that foolish man he'll regret ever meeting me"
