In the North Pacific Ocean, the eastern Alaska Peninsula of the American continent stretched to Russia in a string of small islands, like pearls encrusted with iron in a deep blue ocean. On the eastern side of the peninsula was the island of Deboth, the Russian island to the east.

There was a small town of three or four hundred people on the island. The entire island was small and lovely
