C12 **CHAPTER 12 — Shadows Against the Intruders**

The cathedral was filled with the scent of scorched wood, dust, and a faint metallic hint of spilled blood. Even with the hunters unconscious on the stone floor, Aria couldn’t shake the sensation that more danger was close at hand. The mark on her wrist pulsed lightly, mirroring a heartbeat she felt in her chest.

Lucian crouched next to her, his eyes scanning the broken doorway. His shadowy figure seemed to absorb the light around him, making him appear larger, darker, and more menacing than any human could ever be. He had already mended the barrier that had protected her just moments before, reinforcing it with layers of shadow magic that shimmered faintly in the dim light.

Aria swallowed hard. “Are… are they gone for good?” Her voice trembled, despite her efforts to conceal it.

Lucian’s dark, unwavering gaze flicked toward her. “They never leave completely. Hunters like these… they always return.” He stood up and moved toward the cathedral doors, his silhouette framed by the fading daylight outside. “But I can drive them away for now.”

Aria rose as well, suddenly conscious of her trembling hands. “I want to help,” she said softly. Her voice sounded small against the cathedral’s stone walls, almost swallowed by the echoing silence.

Lucian’s intense gaze locked onto hers, dangerous and fierce like a storm about to erupt. “No,” he replied firmly. “You stay behind me. You’re not a weapon to be thrown into battle.”

She opened her mouth to protest, but a sharp snap of a twig from outside made her flinch. Lucian's shadow twisted around his feet, dark and alive, stretching out toward an unseen threat. Every movement he made was fluid and predatory, calculated.

The hunters stirred not those lying on the floor but new figures emerging from beyond the treeline surrounding the cathedral ruins. Aria’s heart raced as she realized they had been deliberately lured here and trapped in Lucian’s domain, yes, but now returning stronger and more determined than before.

Lucian's jaw tightened as his shadow surged around him like black tendrils reaching outward. The air grew colder. Instinctively stepping back as the temperature dropped sharply, Aria watched as torches flickered wildly, flames twisting unnaturally in response to his power.

“Stay close,” he murmured, his hand hovering near hers without making contact. The tension between them sent a flip through her stomach. She felt the heat of his presence even through the cold, the shadow, and the distance. The way he watched her, protective and possessive, made her heart race.

The hunters had now fully revealed themselves, dressed in dark leather and cloaked in shadows, their weapons gleaming ominously. Their masked eyes were sharp and calculating. They hadn’t anticipated the cathedral's response; they had underestimated him.

Lucian stepped forward, and the shadows around him obeyed without hesitation, swirling into a protective barrier. The hunters charged ahead.

Aria instinctively reached for her mark. It pulsed with warmth as if sensing the approaching danger. Her instincts urged her to act, but she held back. Lucian's gaze was like fire, silently warning her not yet.

The first hunter approached the edge of the barrier. Lucian’s shadow lashes shot out, wrapping around the hunter’s ankles and pulling him backward against the stone wall with a thunderous crash. Aria’s eyes widened; she had never witnessed such raw and lethal power displayed so controlled.

Another hunter swung a blade at him. Lucian moved faster than anyone could see, his shadowed arms deflecting, twisting, and absorbing each strike while turning every attack back on its originator. The cathedral floor cracked under the force of their clashes, sending sparks flying. Aria pressed herself against a pillar, both awed and terrified as she felt the ground tremble beneath her.

“Aria,” Lucian said softly, his voice cutting through the chaos. “Your mark can guide you. But you have to trust me.”

“I do!” she whispered back, though uncertainty still lingered like a shadow behind her words.

Lucian’s eyes softened slightly even as his hands remained deadly in action. He positioned himself between the hunters and Aria, every movement calculated to keep her safe. In the midst of battle, there was a precision in how he protected her, he wasn't just defending her; he was committed to ensuring her survival, evident in every motion he made.

The hunters hesitated as they sensed Lucian's unnatural power surrounding him. Shadows twisted like living beings, cutting off their avenues of attack and striking with deadly accuracy. Their momentum faltered; fear flickered in their masked eyes. They had never encountered anything like him before, nor faced someone who defended what mattered so fiercely.

Lucian's voice rose slightly, authoritative as the shadows spread outward. “Leave. Now.”

The hunters exchanged uneasy glances, none daring to move closer. Shadows lashed at the edges of their formation, warning them with violent, twisting shapes that seemed ready to tear them apart if they dared.

Then Lucian spoke again, his tone softer this time, almost personal: “You do not belong here. Leave, or you will never rise again.”

The hunters retreated slowly, dragging themselves back from the threshold. The last one hesitated for a brief moment, as if sensing the connection between Aria and Lucian the invisible bond of obsession and protection radiating from him like heat. Then they disappeared into the forest, leaving the cathedral in silence once more.

Aria exhaled shakily, her hands trembling. “Lucian… that was incredible.”

He didn’t respond right away. His shadow gradually receded, leaving him standing tall and dark in the dim light of the cathedral. Finally, he turned to her, his eyes intense and unreadable. “You are safe. For now.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “For now?”

He stepped closer, his gaze locked on hers. “They won’t stop coming until they realize… they cannot touch what I protect.”

Aria’s chest tightened at his words; there was something possessive and unwavering in his tone that quickened her heart. “You… you’ll always be here?”

Lucian’s shadow shifted slightly as he moved past her, brushing near her wrist as if feeling the mark's pulse

Aria swallowed hard. The broken and ancient cathedral seemed to resonate with his words. She recognized something both terrifying and exhilarating: she had never felt safer yet so closely watched.

And deep within the silence of the cathedral, she understood that the hunters would return.

But so would he, and Lucian would ensure nothing could harm her.
