C9 **CHAPTER 9 — When the Power Within Her Broke Free**
The silver forest faded behind them as Lucian led Aria and Mara toward the glowing river. The ground shifted beneath their feet like ripples moving under a thin sheet of glass. The realm felt alive—breathing, watching, waiting.
Aria sensed every vibration in her bones.
Her mark still pulsed faintly on her wrist, a persistent reminder of what the guardians had said.
You are the Cursed Heir.
Bound.
Awakening too fast.
She wrapped her arms around herself, trying to suppress the tremors.
Lucian walked just a few steps ahead. He didn’t look back, but she could feel his gaze on her—sharp as a hand pressed against her spine.
Mara whispered, “Aria… are you alright?”
“Not really,” she admitted.
Lucian finally spoke up. “You shouldn’t be afraid.”
Aria blinked. “That’s easy for you to say.”
He halted his steps.
The realm fell silent.
“Aria,” he said, turning slightly so she could see part of his profile. “Nothing that touches you will ever reach you while I’m here.”
Aria’s chest tightened. “You can’t guarantee that.”
He turned fully this time, his eyes darkening. “I can. And I did.”
His voice carried a fierce certainty—a kind of devotion she didn’t yet understand.
Before she could respond, the ground beneath her cracked.
Just a thin line.
Barely a sound.
But the realm felt it.
A soft hum resonated through the air, growing louder and stronger—almost as if the ground were calling her name.
Lucian tensed. “Aria—don’t move.”
She froze. “Why? What’s going on?”
Mara slowly backed away. “She’s glowing again—Lucian, look!”
Aria glanced down.
Her wrist.
Her mark.
Her entire arm.
Lit up like a blazing constellation.
“No—no, no—not again—” Aria gasped.
The air around her warped as small particles rose from the ground, floating like dust motes but shining brightly.
Lucian rushed toward her, shadows swirling from his hands.
“Aria, listen to me—your power is responding to something. You need to breathe.”
“I am breathing!”
“Breathe slower.”
“I can’t!”
Her heart raced faster; her vision blurred. Pressure built in her chest like an exploding star trapped beneath her ribs.
The river ahead glowed brighter and brighter in response to her panic.
Lucian reached out but stopped just short of touching her skin.
“Aria,” he said, his voice dropping low and steady, “look at me.”
She tried.
But the light around her grew brighter, flaring with each heartbeat.
“Lucian—I can’t control it!”
“You don’t need to control it. Just let it flow through you.”
“I don’t know how!”
“Then allow me to guide you.”
Her breath caught. “Lucian.”
But it was too late.
The power surged forth, breaking free. It shattered through her chest in a wave of white and silver light.
The shockwave exploded outward—violent and immense. Trees bent backward. Leaves were ripped from branches. The ground cracked like thunder echoing through shattered glass.
Mara was thrown to the ground.
Lucian braced himself, shadows wrapping around him as the blast hit.
Aria screamed.
Light erupted from her fingertips, her skin glowing, her hair lifting as though gravity had forgotten her.
The world tilted.
The realm roared.
Lucian fought his way through the spiraling wind and light, battling the torrent of magic. “Aria!” he shouted over the storm. “Look at me—focus on my voice!”
She couldn’t. She felt trapped within herself, as if she were floating away from her own body.
Her power surged again, stronger and hotter.
Lucian pushed onward through it.
“Aria—stop resisting!”
“I’m not!”
“Then give it permission! Your power is reacting because you’re afraid!”
“I am afraid!”
He reached her at last.
He grasped her arms—not gently, but firmly enough to ground her.
Her light clashed with his shadows, crackling where they met.
“Lucian—you’re going to get hurt!”
“I don’t care!”
His voice reverberated in the air.
“Aria, listen to me—if this kills me, I’ll die holding you!”
Her breath hitched.
His shadows encircled her wrists, anchoring her. Her power collided with his—white and black bursting into sparks.
But he didn’t let go.
Not even as her magic scorched the ground beneath them.
Not even as energy tore across the sky.
Gradually—the light began to fade.
Her breathing stabilized.
Her vision cleared.
Lucian’s face was mere inches from hers, his eyes fierce and burning, shadows merging with his skin.
“You’re okay,” he whispered, breath unsteady. “I’ve got you.”
Aria collapsed forward.
Lucian caught her instantly, wrapping both arms around her tightly.
Her head rested against his chest, his heartbeat loud and rapid beneath her ear.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered shakily. “I didn’t mean to.”
“It doesn’t matter,” he murmured into her hair. “You’re safe. That’s all that matters.”
She swallowed hard, clutching the fabric of his shirt.
Her mark still glimmered faintly.
Mara approached cautiously. “Aria… is it over?”
Lucian held onto her. “For now.”
Aria pulled back slightly, her eyes misty. “What… what was that?”
Lucian glanced at her glowing wrist.
“That,” he said quietly, “was your first true power burst.”
Aria trembled. “Will that happen again?”
Lucian paused.
Too long.
“Lucian,” she whispered, “tell me the truth.”
He lifted his gaze to meet hers, intense and unwavering.
“It will,” he said. “And next time… it might be worse.”
Aria’s stomach twisted. “Why?”
Lucian brushed his fingers over her mark, barely making contact.
“Because your power isn’t just waking up,” he explained. “It’s trying to break free.”
Aria shivered. “What if I hurt someone? What if—what if I hurt you?”
Lucian leaned in closer.
“You won’t.”
“How do you know?”
He held her gaze steady, his expression serious and firm.
“Because your power knows me,” he said softly. “And it will never destroy what it’s bound to.”
Aria’s breath caught in her throat.
Bound.
The guardians’ words echoed in her mind.
Reluctantly, Lucian stepped back, his fingers lingering on her wrist for a moment longer.
“We need to reach the river,” he said. “It’s the only place that can explain why your power is evolving faster than it should.”
Aria nodded weakly.
But even as she followed him, her legs unsteady, one thought lingered in her mind:
If her power was tied to him…
What else was?
She didn’t know yet.
But the river of memory was about to reveal the truth.
The truth that Lucian had never shared with her.
The truth of the curse…
And her past.
