C7 The New Player

Clover Williams was the precise kind of woman people couldn't help but notice.

It wasn’t simply because she was stunning—though she certainly was, in a hyper-curated, impeccably tailored sort of way. People noticed Clover because she was ubiquitous. She was always present in the high-stakes hallways, always offering a smooth solution, and always smiling like she possessed a piece of confidential information no one else was privy to.

She had joined the Mallik Empire six months ago, stepping into a middle-management role in corporate strategy. On paper, her credentials were flawless: Ivy League degrees, glowing recommendations from top-tier firms, and an impressive track record. Within weeks of her arrival, she had deftly positioned herself to become indispensable—volunteering for grueling late-night projects, sitting in on high-level briefings, and subtly signaling to leadership that she was a rising star destined for the executive suite.

Sephora had noticed Clover long before anyone else did, primarily because Clover seemed to orbit her desk like a satellite. She was constantly stopping by—asking seemingly innocent questions about workflow, offering to take over tedious reports, and continually inserting herself into Sephora’s private projects.

At first, it had the convincing polish of genuine workplace friendliness. But Sephora had spent years learning how to read the complex, shark-infested waters of corporate politics, and something about Clover’s warmth felt intensely calculated. Every interaction felt like an intelligence-gathering mission.

"You are just so ridiculously good at what you do, Sephora," Clover said one morning, gliding up to the desk and placing an artisanal vanilla latte down—a drink Sephora had never once asked for.

Sephora looked at the cup, then up at Clover’s perfectly sculpted smile. "Thank you, Clover. But you really didn't need to bring me this."

"Oh, it was no trouble at all!" Clover waved a hand dismissively, leaning against the edge of the desk. "Honestly, I don't know how Daniel survived on this floor before you arrived. You're practically essential to his entire existence."

"I just do the job I was hired to do," Sephora replied evenly, feeling a sudden, uncomfortable tightness in her chest at the observation.

"Oh, come on, don't be modest," Clover purred, her eyes scanning Sephora’s face with razor-sharp precision. "You do it seamlessly. And Daniel clearly trusts you implicitly. I mean, he barely even acknowledges anyone else on this entire floor." Clover’s smile broadened, though the light never quite reached her cold, calculating eyes. "Must be so nice... having that kind of power over a man like him."

Power. The word hung in the air between them, heavy and telling.

In that quiet moment, Sephora realized the truth: Clover didn't see her as a fellow colleague or a teammate working toward the same corporate goals. She saw Sephora as an obstacle. A rival. A piece of real estate standing directly between Clover and the ultimate prize: Daniel Mallik’s inner circle. And Clover was already beginning to lay the groundwork to tear her down.

Later that same week, Clover made her move, bypassing Sephora entirely to approach Daniel directly.

She waited for a window when Daniel’s office door was slightly cracked, slipping inside under the guise of an urgent project update. She radiated bright, high-octane energy, her polished heels clicking against the hardwood as she settled effortlessly into one of the leather armchairs across from his massive walnut desk.

"I just wanted to do a quick check-in on the global merger strategy," Clover began, her voice smooth and confident as she crossed her legs. "I know you've been working exclusively with Sephora on the preliminary valuation audits, but I wanted to make sure you had secondary perspectives on the table. Diversity of thought, you know? A fresh pair of eyes never hurts on a multi-billion-dollar deal."

Daniel didn't lift his eyes from the glowing laptop screen in front of him. "The preliminary analysis is exceptionally solid," he said, his voice flat, professional, and entirely uninviting.

"Oh, I'm sure it is," Clover offered quickly, her tone dripping with sweet, performative praise. "Sephora is undeniably competent. Though..."

She paused, leaning forward conspiratorially, her voice dropping into a soft, concerned whisper.

"Though I did find myself wondering... do you ever worry she might be getting a little too personally focused on you? Please, don't misunderstand me—I don't mean anything malicious by it! But the way she looks at you in meetings, the way she hovers... I would just hate to see a critical oversight happen on the merger because her professional objectivity has become compromised."

She offered a soft, sympathetic sigh. "Unspoken feelings can do tricky things to a person's focus, you know?"

Daniel stopped typing. He slowly raised his head, his dark, icy eyes locking onto Clover with a stillness that usually made senior board members sweat.

"Simons is an absolute professional," Daniel said, each word laced with a quiet, dangerous steel.

"Of course she is!" Clover instantly smoothed over the moment, offering her signature, flawless smile as she stood up from the chair. "I’m just looking out for you, Daniel. For the company. I want this merger to succeed just as desperately as you do."

With a subtle, graceful tilt of her head, Clover turned and exited the office, leaving a faint trail of expensive perfume in her wake.

After the heavy door clicked shut, Daniel sat motionless behind his desk.

He stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling city below, but for the first time all day, he wasn't thinking about stock valuations or acquisition timelines. Clover’s poison-laced words were echoing in the quiet room, reverberating in his mind.

Sephora looking at him with feelings.

Logically, he told himself it was ridiculous. He told himself that Clover Williams was simply an ambitious mid-level executive trying to stir the pot, attempting to create a crack in Sephora’s flawless armor so she could step into her shoes.

He told himself it was all corporate noise.

And yet, as he recalled the late nights in this very office, the lingering touches over coffee cups, and the quiet intensity in Sephora’s eyes when she looked at him, a dark, dangerous question planted itself deep within his mind.

What if Clover was right?
