C6 What did I do wrong?
Emily smiled as she looked at the clothes she had just prepared for Axton, occasionally glancing towards the bathroom door where she could still hear the sound of running water as Axton was inside.
With a wide smile and boundless enthusiasm, Emily got out of bed to welcome the sun and embrace her role as a devoted wife on Axton's first day at work. Just like now, after arranging Axton's office attire, Emily chose to head straight to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for both of them.
"I hope Axton likes the clothes I've prepared," Emily murmured. In reality, Emily didn't know Axton's favorite colors. She simply coordinated colors that matched the suit, shirt, and trousers, thinking they would look great on her husband.
Still with a smile lighting up her face, Emily descended the stairs to the kitchen. She was truly in a happy mood, and it seemed like she would have a good day, thought Emily.
Emily started opening the refrigerator to see what food items were available. However, her smile faded when she found only a few wilted vegetables, heavily frozen meat, and a few canned foods, causing her to furrow her brow. In truth, during her separation from Grace, Emily had no idea what kind of life Axton was living.
Emily then sighed, looking at a few pieces of bread and some jam available there, realizing that this morning she could only prepare a simple breakfast menu for them. Emily had actually thought about what menu to cook.
With slightly less enthusiasm, Emily began to arrange the toasted bread on the dining table along with a glass of milk, some fruit, juice, and also coffee. Emily didn't know what Axton typically drank in the morning, so she felt uncertain about how Axton would respond to this breakfast.
Until Emily's movements came to a halt when she heard footsteps descending the stairs, causing her to turn around to greet Axton in the morning with her sweet smile. However, her smile faded when Axton was wearing different clothes than the ones she had prepared earlier. Emily simply stared at Axton, who remained focused on his phone.
"Why are you wearing different clothes?" Emily asked, causing Axton to finally look in her direction and then at the clothes he was wearing.
"My clothes? Is there something wrong?" Axton asked, making Emily fall silent.
"I had prepared your clothes on the bed earlier. Why didn't you wear them? Don't you like the colors?" Emily asked, leaving Axton speechless.
"You prepared my clothes? Sorry, I must not have seen them. I went straight to the dressing room and picked out my own clothes. I didn't look around," Axton replied casually, leaving Emily speechless.
It was impossible for neatly arranged clothes not to be seen on the bed. Emily could only sigh deeply. Axton then moved to sit down, but his movements stopped when he saw three different beverages in front of him. Axton immediately looked at Emily, who could only smile awkwardly.
"Actually, I didn't know what you liked to drink in the morning, so I chose to prepare milk, coffee, and juice. So, you can choose the drink you prefer," Emily said again, making Axton look at the bread and some jam placed near the drinks.
"Initially, I wanted to cook, but after seeing what's in the fridge, there were only wilted vegetables, some canned food, and frozen meat. So, I thought it would be better to prepare toast for breakfast. But I promise, before lunch, I'll go to the office and bring you lunch, a dish cooked by my own hands. So, before that, I have to—" Emily's words stopped when Axton immediately raised his hand.
"I understand, but you don't have to go through all that trouble. I'll eat at the office canteen, and for breakfast, you can have it yourself. I'm running late," Axton replied, getting up from his seat without touching the drink or breakfast Emily had prepared. Of course, Emily couldn't just let it be. She immediately chased after Axton, taking long strides.
"But at least you can have some toast. I prepared it with all my heart," Emily said again, carrying the plate of toast, following Axton's steps.
"I'm running late, Emily. So, you better have it yourself," Axton replied. However, Emily was a determined woman and wouldn't give up just because her toast was rejected.
"No, you have to at least taste it, and I can't eat this much toast by myself," Emily said, continuing to follow Axton's steps. But suddenly, Axton came to a stop, seemingly growing tired of Emily's chatter as she continued to trail behind him.
Axton stopped abruptly, causing Emily to be unable to halt her steps and eventually collide with his rigid back. Emily covered both her ears as the plate of toast and its contents fell to the floor, with shards of glass decorating the bread.
Emily fell silent, then looked at Axton, who still had a stern expression on his face. Afterward, Axton could only sigh deeply.
"Emily, you really don't need to go to all this trouble to play the role of a good wife. You can just stay here, and we'll take care of ourselves. You don't need to take care of my food, clothes, or anything else. I can do it myself, and I can also think about my own stomach. So please, stop playing the role of a good wife," Axton said, leaving Emily speechless. Somehow, Axton's words really hurt Emily's feelings. Emily still remembered clearly when Axton agreed that she would be a legitimate wife to him, not a pretend wife or a contractual wife.
"And I know what you're thinking right now, but I plead, I need privacy, and I also have certain boundaries. I hope you won't cross those boundaries," Axton said before leaving abruptly, leaving Emily who hadn't even responded to his words.
Emily then stared at the bread mixed with the shards of glass, slowly bending her knees to pick up some of the glass shards.
"Men can be so cruel. What did I do wrong? I just wanted to pay attention to his messed-up life. He should be thankful to me for willingly becoming his wife and even waking up early to prepare everything so I could be a good wife. But what's his response? He uttered such hurtful words to his wife. Hah, love can be cruel. Why do I love someone with a heart so cold and a mind so stone-like?" mumbled Emily, continuing to rant while cleaning up the mess that morning.
Once again, Emily could only sigh deeply. However, her movement stopped when she saw someone standing in front of her front door. Emily fell silent because this person seemed to be an audience applauding the drama of her household this morning. Emily didn't know what comment would be made about the drama she had just witnessed.
