C2 The Bed Companion Becomes a Brotherinlaw
Gu Yifan returned home, took a nap, and then headed to the radio station for a quick visit. She owned the station, having built it from the ground up after leaving her family. Over the past five years, she poured her heart and soul into it, transforming it from a struggling startup into a thriving business.
After wrapping up her tasks at the company, Yifan glanced at the reminder on her planner with a sense of dread. Tomorrow was her grandfather's birthday, a day she had to return to her family home, inevitably facing the usual drama. But with her grandfather there, she had no choice but to go.
She prepared a few gifts and set off for her family's house the next day. Her grandfather and father, both prominent figures, lived in the city center, requiring over an hour's drive to reach them.
Few people knew she was Gu Changsheng's daughter because he resented her. In his eyes, she had cost him his only chance at having a son.
When she rang the doorbell of the villa, Mrs. Liu, the housekeeper, seemed momentarily taken aback. After a long pause, she forced a smile. "Miss Yifan, you're back."
Mrs. Liu had been with the family since Yifan's mother was alive, so she was well aware of the family's dynamics, including Yifan's awkward position within it.
Yifan handed the gifts she brought to Mrs. Liu.
"Who's here, Mrs. Liu?" Lee Xue asked, descending the stairs in her red silk pajamas. Her expression changed instantly when she saw Gu Yifan. She snapped, "Who let her in? Mrs. Liu! Get her out!"
Mrs. Liu looked at Gu Yifan with a troubled expression. This scene played out several times a year.
Gu Yifan smirked coldly and said, "This is my house. I'm here to see Grandpa. Do I need your permission?" The woman before her was her stepmother, and their issues were far too complex to resolve with a few words.
"You little wretch! You ruined my son, and now you want to ruin me! Get out! Get out!" The woman, now acting like a shrew, shuffled over in her slippers, snatched the gift from Mrs. Liu's hands, and threw it out the door, scattering various supplements all over the ground.
Gu Yifan's expression changed as she stepped forward and pushed Lee Xue aside. She went outside to pick up the few boxes that were still intact. "Lee Xue, you're insane. These are for Grandpa. What gives you the right to throw them?"
"Ha, that old geezer. If you pity him so much, why don't you take him away? He's just taking up space here, and I can't stand the sight of him."
Gu Yifan shot her a cold look. Did she not want to? But Gu Changsheng wouldn't allow it. She couldn't believe that this man, worse than an animal, was her father. It was a disgrace to her. He had driven her mother to her death, and now he was exploiting the grandfather who once helped him. She couldn't understand why such a scumbag was still alive.
Yifan was carrying her things upstairs, determined not to exchange another word with these heartless people. However, Lee Xue stepped in to block her path. "Who said you could go upstairs? Get out of my house!" she demanded, trying to push Yifan back.
"Lee Xue, don't push it!" Yifan retorted, shoving her aside. Lee Xue stumbled and fell to the ground.
Without sparing her a glance, Yifan continued up the stairs, only to be stopped by Gu Changsheng. He slapped her hard across the face, causing her head to snap to the side. "You disrespectful brat, is that how you talk to your mother?"
Yifan lifted her head defiantly, her eyes blazing with anger. "My mom's been dead a long time. If she wants to be my mom, she should ask my real mom down below if she agrees!"
Gu Changsheng was taken aback by the hatred in her eyes. He remembered another woman who had looked at him that way before jumping from the twentieth floor. His expression turned violent. "Don't mention that woman in front of me!" he shouted, kicking Yifan. She was still on the stairs and tumbled down awkwardly from the force of his kick.
Her forehead hit the edge of a step, immediately splitting open. Warm blood trickled down her face, and Yifan felt dizzy. She struggled to stand as Mrs. Liu, witnessing the horrifying wound on her face, let out a gasp.
Now her face was completely unrecognizable. Yifan stood up, ignoring her own injuries, and stared at him with a look that could kill. "What? Feeling guilty? If it weren't for my mom, you wouldn't have the status you have today."
"You wretch, just like your mother!" Gu Changsheng had no desire to see his daughter, who had caused the death of his only son and constantly brought shame to him.
Yifan clenched her fists. "You think I want to come back? Even if you begged me to return after I take Grandpa away, I wouldn't!"
"You want to take that old man? Dream on! Until he hands over the money, don't even think about it! Don't think I don't know what you're up to. Not a single penny from the Gu family will be yours!" Gu Changsheng's eyebrows twitched with anger.
Yifan laughed coldly. Some people are so vile they assume everyone else is just as bad. "Ha, you think I care? Gu Changsheng, you're nothing but a beast! Being born your daughter is the greatest shame of my life."
"You!" Gu Changsheng shook with rage, storming down the stairs. He grabbed a wine bottle from the cabinet and swung it at Yifan, but she closed her eyes, bracing for impact. Yet, the bottle never struck.
She opened her eyes just as a large hand stopped Gu Changsheng's arm from striking down. "You could seriously hurt someone!" The man's voice was deep and indifferent.
Gu Yifan turned her head and saw a familiar man, Hsu Moyan. What was he doing here? Surprise flickered in her eyes, but she quickly looked away, embarrassed that he had seen her in such a state.
Hsu Moyan glanced at Gu Yifan briefly, then shifted his gaze as if he didn't know her at all.
"Moyan, why did you come down? Aren't you supposed to be upstairs with Jieyu?" The tone suddenly softened.
This made Gu Yifan look up in surprise again. Who was this man that Gu Changsheng would speak to him so kindly?
"Jieyu heard the noise and wanted to check it out," he replied, his voice still cold but with an unexpected hint of warmth. Gu Yifan had never heard him speak like this before, and it stirred something inside her, though she couldn't quite identify what she was feeling.
Gu Changsheng's expression eased considerably. "Oh, just a bit of family business. Sorry if we disturbed you."
"Dad, why are you hitting my sister again?" Gu Jieyu came down the stairs and stood next to Gu Yifan, frowning at the injury on her face. "Dad, you went too far this time. Sis, let me help you get that bandaged."
Yifan pulled her hand away from Jieyu, her stepsister, who always played the good girl.
“Jieyu, why bother with her? Just focus on your own wedding. It's coming up soon, so you should be getting everything ready for the reception.”
Yifan looked up in disbelief at the two of them. “You two, getting married?” The man she had been with for years was about to become her brother-in-law.
Jieyu shyly linked her arm with the man beside her. “Yes, we’re getting married soon. Sister, would you like to come to our wedding?”
Yifan suddenly burst into laughter, tears mixing with the blood at the corner of her eye, giving her a slightly frightening appearance. “Well, I wish you both happiness.” She turned and walked out the door.
Lee Xue was too startled by her expression to say anything, and everyone just watched as Yifan left the house.
Yifan felt like the world was incredibly small, with everyone connected to her somehow ending up together. It seemed like fate was playing a cruel joke on her.
