C20 The New Chief Editor

Su Kexin paused for a second before realizing that Gu Chi was holding an electric shaver.

It seemed the shaver had run out of power.

She quickly took it from him, examining the device with a furrowed brow. "It needs a button battery. Don't you have any at home?"

"I checked with Mr. Wang, and it appears we're out."

"Looks like we'll have to buy some," Su Kexin said, casting a glance at Gu Chi. His chin was shadowed with stubble; he definitely needed a shave. "Is there a convenience store or supermarket around here?"

"No."

Su Kexin was taken aback. "Nothing at all?"

Gu Chi shook his head.

Su Kexin was momentarily floored by the opulent lifestyle.

"So, what's the plan?" Su Kexin asked, feeling somewhat at a loss. "Maybe your assistant could pick one up?"

"He's already en route. There's an important meeting today, and he might not make it in time," Gu Chi replied, his brows knitting together. "I asked Mr. Zhang, and he has a new shaver, but it's a manual one. I'm not familiar with how to use it."

It took a moment for Su Kexin to grasp why Gu Chi had sought her out. Was he asking her to shave him?

"Where is it?" Su Kexin suddenly found this side of Gu Chi rather endearing. She smiled slightly. "I know how to use one. I'll shave you."

"In the storage cabinet."

Su Kexin quickly located the shaver, an old-fashioned model that required lubricant. She meticulously applied the lubricant around Gu Chi's chin before starting to shave him with gentle precision.

Suddenly, they were in close quarters, Su Kexin's breath lightly grazing Gu Chi's cheek.

Gu Chi looked up slightly and could see Su Kexin's face just inches away, her delicate skin as soft as a peach fuzz.

"Is something wrong?" Su Kexin tensed even more when she caught Gu Chi's intense gaze. "I didn't nick you, did I?"

"No," Gu Chi responded, his voice as cool as always. "It's just that, with you doing this, you really seem like my wife."

Su Kexin was taken aback, her cheeks warming with a blush.

They were undeniably a real couple, yet Gu Chi chose to say "seems like."

It was as if he was admitting that, just like her, he felt no genuine connection to their whirlwind marriage.

"All done." Su Kexin finished shaving Gu Chi's beard with swift precision. After meticulously cleaning off the shaving cream, she glanced at his reflection and a small smile played at the corners of her mouth. "Very clean."

"Thanks." Gu Chi responded coolly, then wheeled himself over to the dining table to eat.

The close encounter they had just shared hung awkwardly between them during the meal, so much so that Su Kexin completely forgot to ask Gu Chi if he was pleased with her handiwork.

Once they finished eating, Yang Zuo showed up. Gu Chi was pressed for time and couldn't escort Su Kexin to the subway station, so she hailed a cab and headed straight to the magazine office on her own.

Arriving at the magazine office, Su Kexin sensed a shift from the previous day's festive air to one of tension. She couldn't help but grab Xiaomei, whispering, "What's going on?"

"Kexin, you didn't check your email this morning?" Xiaomei's eyes were round with shock. "Our magazine was acquired by someone yesterday! The entire executive team has been changed!"

Su Kexin was floored.

Their magazine might not have been a giant, but it was an established publication with several years under its belt. How could it have been bought out so suddenly?

Before she could gather her thoughts, a buzz arose from her colleagues by the door.

"Here they come! The new editor-in-chief has arrived!"

Su Kexin looked up just in time to see a tall figure making their way into the office, flanked by a crowd. The instant she recognized the face, Su Kexin felt a blow to her gut, her complexion draining to a ghostly white.
