C5 Chapter Five

David was driving speedily at the instruction of Miller who was now feeling hungry. He was still speeding when he came to a stop suddenly as he almost hit a lady who strayed to the road.

Seeing the lady fall to the ground, David's heart skipped a bit. He was afraid he had killed someone. He quickly got down from the car and went to the lady.

The lady had no blood stain on her. That realisation relieved him.

"But if she has an internal bleeding?" he reasoned and quickly bent to tap the lady.

"Ma'am! Ma'am, are you okay?" he asked the lady who was trying to keep her eyes open.

By now, Miller had alighted from the car too. He recognised the lady as Kate from the previous night.

"Help her get to the hospital," Miller said.

David helped Kate up and drove her to the hospital. Miller took care of the bills and also handed few cash to the doctor to give to Kate whenever she comes around before leaving the hospital.

The drive from the hospital to the newly built hotel was tense for David as he thought he would be fired for his mistake. Breakfast was waiting for Miller at the hotel as he had ordered it while in the car because he would be late if he decide to get one himself.

After inspecting the hotel and having his breakfast, he was impressed by what he saw. Peter has proved himself to be hardworking and competent.

David drove to the family cottage.

Kate woke up feeling light-headed. She opened her eyes adjusting them to her surroundings. She was startled to find herself in the hospital. She began to panic; just then a nurse entered her ward.

"You are awake now," the nurse smiled at her.

"I'm sorry but I don't recall how I got here," Kate said confused.

"Oh? About that, you had an accident but you are lucky it wasn't much. You had just passed out from shock," the nurse said, her smile not leaving her face.

It was though the smile is meant to put hope in patients.

After the nurse mentioned the accident, Kate began to recall hearing the screeched of a car before passing out. She heaved a sigh of relief. Whoever almost hit and brought her to the hospital shall be blessed.

"Who brought me in please?" Kate questioned.

"Mr Miller Chalmers," the nurse said smiling like an idiot.

Kate wasn't stupid not to know what the smile means. She just folded her fist beside her and forced a smile. Why him?

She was still getting angry when her phone rang. She checked the caller and realised it was Manager Mark. That was when she remembered her job.

Tears welled in her eyes. She couldn't afford to lose part of her salary or worst still, lose her job.

"Kate, where are you?" Manager Mark asked worriedly.

He has been trying to reach her but she wasn't picking up. He knew Kate wasn't the type of miss work even if she will, she would have called.

"I'm at the hospital," she replied.

"Hospital? Geez! What happened to you? Are you fine now?" he questioned.

"It was a minor accident. I'm fine now. I'm sorry for missing work today. I can do the night shift if you don't mind," she responded hoping that her job won't be on the line.

That she dreaded most.

"No. Don't worry. Get better soon. I will put in words on your behalf," he assured.

"Thank you so much sir," she appreciated. The manger ended the call already.

The nurse looked at her after she was done with her phone call.

"You are fine now. A little more rest and you will good to go," the nurse quoth, "Also, do well to see the doctor before leaving," the nurse added.

"Thanks," Kate appreciated.

She visited the doctor's office before leaving the hospital. The doctor gave her the money Miller had instructed him to give to her. She appreciated and left the hospital. She ensured she was being careful this time and so, her concentration was on walking home and nothing more.

Mrs Chalmers was very happy when her son got to the mansion. She pulled him by the ear fondly and kissed his cheeks. Miller smiled.

"Mom, I've grown past these gestures," Miller complained like a child whose candy was collected from him.

Mrs Chalmers laughed heartedly, "You can't outgrow any of my gestures, okay?" she said ruffling his well-styled hair.

Her son grinned. "Don't worry, when I get married, my jealous wife will make you stop," he joked.

"Get married to Steph?" she questioned.

Miller almost puke at the mention of that name. He feels his mother wants to enforce him to marry Steph like his father is doing too.

"Mom," Mrs Chalmers noticed the change in his tone.

"I'm not forcing you to marry her. I just mention her because she is the only one I know who is all over you," she laughed trying to wave the awkwardness in the air.

Miller smiled. "I'm farmished, mom," he complained holding his stomach.

"I was waiting for your father," Mrs Chalmers said.

"Your husband. You know that man is too selfish to father me. He wants me to get married to Steph because of the power he will get when the two families become one," Miller scoffed.

"He is still your father at the end," Mrs Chalmers raised her eyebrow.

"Okay. Fine. I might as well faint from hunger," Miller said and fell to the floor pretending to faint.

His mother laughed at his childish stunts.

"Who would think the great and mighty Miller Chalmers is a big baby behind closed doors?" she said.

Miller laughed wholeheartedly. He has missed his mother so much.

Mr Fred Chalmers came back from his office few minutes later. He pulled off his suit before going to the dining room. His family members walked behind him. As soon as he got to the dining room, he served himself without waiting for others.

"Good afternoon, Mr Fred," Miller greeted to make his presence known to his father.

"Afternoon young man," Mr Fred replied and began digging in his food.

Miller rolled his eyes and raised an eyebrow when his eye came in contact with his mother's. His mother smiled wearily.

"Old man, we have been waiting for you to arrive before eating but look at you here, eating without being bothered about others. Are you selfish even on the dining table?" Miller questioned.

Mr Fred looked up. "Oh? It is you, Mill. Don't expect me to apologise. Son, I've used up my energy so I need to refill it, okay?" Mr Fred said.

"Don't call me son or any endearing names like Mill. A selfish man can't father me," Miller thundered.

"Mill!" Mrs Chamlers called.

"Mom, I'm just being honest with my remark of him," Miller said.

"Let him be honey. I'm never tired of his earful," Mr Fred said.

Mrs Chalmers glared at her husband before facing her son.

"Mill, he is your father so learn how to behave to a father and do to him. I'm fed up of trying to make you two understand each other everytime we are together like this," she said with a deep frown.

"I lost my appetite already," Miller hit his hand on the table and stood up. He went over to his mother and kissed her cheeks, "I will see you later mom when this old man is not present," he left.

"Don't ever have a contact with my wife when I'm not there," Mr Fred thundered after him.

Miller chuckled and wondered if his selfish father is a jealous husband too.
