C20 Gery's Sad Love Story

The story of Gery's past also touched Eve. She let out a long sigh and tried to hide her sympathy because she didn't want to be considered too easy to change her feelings. But, when Madame Daphne told the sad story, Eve's defenses instantly collapsed. She immediately felt so sorry for Gery's fate. She seemed to understand the change in his attitude after experiencing those two super heartbreaking moments.

"He was only a little more cheerful when he met Cheryl. The pretty girl from his school. She was often the reason for Gery's happiness when he told me about his moments at school." Mrs. Daphne said.

Eve continued to listen intently to the exciting story. She began to see how Gery's past personality was.

"Until college, they continued to choose the same place to study. In fact, Cheryl's parents and I had agreed to marry the two of them when they graduated from college," Mrs. Daphne continued, trying to play her memories chronologically so that she could tell the story in detail and not make a mistake.

"So where is Cheryl now, Ma'am?" asked Eve when she waited a little longer, but Mrs. Daphne didn't continue.

"She ... the girl disappeared. She left without saying goodbye to us. Her family also came here to apologize for their daughter's sassy behavior. She ran away exactly one day before her engagement day with Gery!" Mrs. Daphne's voice turned fierce as she said it.

Eve gasped at this. Her eyes widened to show her shock.

"Oh my! Running away, Ma'am? But didn't they love each other?" Eve asked again, trying to deduce from the story she had just heard that the young couple had been delighted together, right? Then why did Cheryl run away at the time of the engagement? How strange!

"Yes, she ran away because I told Gery not to allow the girl to continue her modeling career. I couldn't accept that the future daughter-in-law of the esteemed Foster family was a model who often had to strut her stuff in front of the camera. I don't like that," Mrs. Daphne replied.

Eve was now nodding her head. The conservative and idealistic Mrs. Daphne didn't like Cheryl's profession, so the girl decided to leave and not continue the engagement.

"That girl is a coward. She didn't raise her objections before us. Still, she ran away at the last moment when the invitations had already gone out to all our colleagues, business associates, and extended family. It wasn't about the material loss, but the shame we endured that made Gery feel even worse. He was depressed and didn't want to see anyone for some time. Fortunately, it wasn't long before Sofia and I persuaded him." Mrs. Daphne continued the story.

Eve got carried away and needed to remember the time that was getting late. She forgot her promise to her father that she would not come home after nine. Their conversation had to end when Eve received a phone call that suddenly rang loudly from the cell phone in her handbag.

"Oh, sorry, Ma'am, it's my Dad," Eve replied when she saw the name on the screen.

Mrs. Daphne nodded her head, signaling for Eve to take the call.

"Yes, Dad. Sorry, I'll be home soon." Mrs. Daphne also heard Eve's voice and immediately glanced at the wall clock.

Eve put her cell phone back into her bag and looked unpleasantly at her host.

"I'm sorry, Ma'am. I still want to accompany you tonight, but my dad has asked me to go home. I promised not to come home too late tonight," Eve said goodbye.

"Of course, Eve. I was wrong to invite you this evening. Next time, we should meet often outside the office but in the afternoon hours, right?"

Then, the Madame sent her servant to tell the family driver that Eve was ready to be driven back to her home.

"Be careful on the road, and do convey my apologies to your parents for keeping them anxiously waiting, okay?" said Madame Daphne with a smile.

"Yes, Ma'am. Thank you very much for your hospitality and kindness in hosting me this evening," Eve replied politely.

She then went to the courtyard, where the car that had picked her up earlier was ready to take her back home. When she got to the gate, another black car was about to enter the yard. And when Eve turned her head to see who the driver was, she immediately looked away as her eyes locked with a pair of jet-black eyes framed by thick, almost interlocking eyebrows.

Gery was driving the car and opening the windshield then, so he had a chance to meet Eve, who had also partially closed the passenger side windshield where she was sitting.

"Is that girl still here at this hour? Huh!" grumbled Gery, turning her face back to the steering wheel.

"Damn! That fridge is so annoying even when it's quiet!" In the other car, Eve was also grumbling.

A second later, she remembered the sad story told by Gery's grandmother inside. The tremor in her heart rushed, sending sympathy and pity back into the air. But when she encountered the man's extraordinary cynicism, Eve suddenly became annoyed again. Yes, Gery's attitude was indeed that annoying!

At the Foster family residence, a frowning Gery was greeted by her grandmother.

"Gery! Isn't it good that you left without asking for any permit from your grandma?" the old lady scolded.

"Grandma, I'll always go out whenever you invite that horrid girl. Please remember that!" Gery replied sternly and firmly, which made Mrs. Daphne shake her head in annoyance.

"Oh my! It's so hard for me to bring these two young men together. One is stubbornness. And the other one, oh, I don't know what Eve thinks of Gery now," Mrs. Daphne grumbled into the phone when she was already in her room and talking to Sofia.

"Take it easy, Ma'am. We still have plenty of time," Sofia replies comfortingly.

"But I'm getting old, Sofia. I want it soon ...."

"I'm sure that one day they will be united either by our means or love itself will act to unite the two of them, Ma'am," Sofia said in a tone full of confidence.

"Hey, Sofia. Why are you so poetic and romantic tonight, hm?" teased Madame Daphne which brought out a faint blush on Sofia's face even though no one saw it as they were only chatting over the voice phone line.

"Hehehe, just expressing what is my feeling, Ma'am."

Yes, Sofia strongly feels that Eve and Gery are indeed a match made one another.
