C10 You Have to Think about It!
Huo Tian frowned at her, unsure of what this woman was up to. She had gone through so much trouble to marry him, and now, after waking up, he noticed a fleeting look of unfamiliarity in her eyes. When he brought up divorce, she didn't just agree; she urged him to hurry. Wasn't this change too drastic? Drastic enough to make him think twice.
"I'll find another caretaker for my grandfather as soon as possible. Once I do, you can move out. In the meantime, you'll still need to look after them, and I'll pay you for it," Huo Tian said, watching her closely, trying to figure out what game she was playing. But he saw nothing—just a genuine desire to leave, not some ploy to get him back. Oddly, it left him a bit annoyed.
"I've packed up everything that doesn't belong in the room upstairs. For now, I'll stay in my old room," Soong Yu said.
Huo Tian had no objections.
Soong Yu nodded, picked up her suitcase, and went to her previous room. It was much smaller than the one upstairs but still very clean. After settling in, she took the bedding outside to wash. The courtyard had running water now, but in October, the water was already quite cold.
After some effort, she finished washing the sheets and was hanging them to dry when she heard a noise at the door. Huo Zhen had returned.
Huo Zhen was visibly surprised to see Soong Yu. "You're back," she said first.
He glanced at her and nodded, unable to resist asking, "How's your health?"
"I'm all better," she replied, her eyes inexplicably welling up with tears at the concern in his voice. Huo Zhen had always been good to her before. Now... she had to live with the consequences of her actions.
Huo Zhen nodded and went inside. Seeing his grandson sitting there made him uncomfortable. He had been stuck in his ways back then, and now, seeing his grandson like this, he felt he owed him. He knew why his grandson hadn't visited since getting married.
Huo Tian stood up. "Grandpa..."
Huo Zhen nodded. "You're back. How long are you staying?"
Seeing the hopeful look in his grandfather's eyes, Huo Tian changed his mind about what he was going to say. "I'll leave tomorrow."
Huo Zhen felt a bit happier hearing this, but he couldn't shake the sadness over why his grandson didn't want to stay home longer.
"Tian, it's my fault."
Huo Tian's expression softened. He stood up. "We're family, no need to talk like that. Come on, it's been ages since we played chess. Let's have a few games today."
Huo Zhen was a chess enthusiast. Hearing his grandson's offer, he was thrilled. He leaned on his cane to stand up. "Alright, but don't go easy on me."
"Don't worry, I wouldn't dream of it."
The two of them chatted as they headed upstairs.
Meanwhile, Soong Yu had finished airing out the sheets and took the comforter from her room to air out as well. Looking at the empty space in the yard, she thought it was a shame to leave it bare. It was the perfect time to plant some vegetables like lettuce and carrots.
Since she couldn't sit still anyway, she decided to tidy up and plant something. Leaving the land to grow weeds seemed like such a waste.
With that thought, Soong Yu rummaged around and actually found a shovel and a hoe in the corner.
She used the hoe to clear away the weeds, gathering them up and setting them aside. Then she started digging and turning the soil with the shovel.
It wasn't a huge area, but it wasn't small either. By the time she finished preparing the ground, she was both tired and hungry.
She hadn't even had lunch yet.
Glancing at the sky, she guessed it was around four in the afternoon. Time to head out and buy groceries.
After putting away the tools, Soong Yu went inside. Not seeing Huo Tian around, she figured he must be staying for dinner.
With that in mind, Soong Yu headed to the kitchen, recalling where some money was kept in a drawer. She grabbed a basket and set out to buy groceries.
Less than a mile from the house was a farmer's market.
Following her memory, she made her way there. When she saw the lively fish, she suddenly craved spicy fish stew. Just thinking about it made her stomach growl. She ended up buying a blackfish, along with some other vegetables and ingredients.
Nowadays, many ingredients are hard to find, so Soong Yu picked out what she could get. Unlike later times when advanced farming techniques allowed for a variety of produce year-round, she could only buy seasonal vegetables.
At the market, she spotted water bamboo, lotus root, sweet potatoes, and some peppers, greens, and celery. She bought a bit of everything, especially those bright red peppers that looked so appetizing. With Huo Tian at home, and knowing how men generally enjoy meat, she also bought about four pounds of it.
This way, they could all enjoy a good meal, and she could get the nutrition she needed.
