C14 When the House Is Leaking There will be a Continuous Rain
At exactly seven o'clock, Huo Tian came downstairs.
“Do you want to eat now or wait for Grandpa?” Soong Yu asked.
“I'll eat now.”
Soong Yu nodded, went to the kitchen, made two pancakes, and placed a bowl of porridge in front of him before turning to leave.
Huo Tian glanced at the pancakes, then at Soong Yu, but said nothing and started eating.
Before long, Huo Zhen also came downstairs.
Seeing him, Soong Yu quickly went to assist the elderly man. “Sorry about yesterday. I forgot you can't handle spicy food.”
Huo Zhen gave her a look. “I was the one who overindulged.”
Huo Zhen went to freshen up. When he returned, there was also a pancake and a bowl of porridge waiting for him on the table.
Huo Zhen looked at the setup, a bit puzzled.
Soong Yu had always been diligent, but she had some habits from childhood that were hard to break. For instance, when serving dishes or porridge, there would often be bits of food or rice around the rim of the bowl, which she never bothered to clean up.
But now, everything was spotless, from the dishes to the bowls. Not only that, but the chopstick rests and condiment dishes, which were rarely used, were neatly arranged. The chopsticks and spoons were placed on the rests, and although the condiment dishes were empty, there was vinegar on the side.
This attention to detail made Huo Zhen glance at his grandson.
After a few seconds of eye contact, Huo Tian said, “Grandpa, I’m off to work. If I get off early, I’ll come back sooner.”
Hearing this, Huo Zhen was overjoyed. “That’s great, that’s great. You should come back often. If you don’t keep an eye on your sister, she might get into trouble.”
Huo Tian stood up as he spoke. “I’ll handle it when I get back.”
“Drive safely.”
“Got it.” As Huo Tian left, he glanced back at the kitchen, which was completely silent. In the past, Soong Yu would always see him off at the door.
Huo Tian turned and walked briskly outside. Passing through the yard, he paused to take a good look at the flowers and plants, then glanced at the vegetable garden nearby.
The freshly turned soil still carried a distinct earthy scent in the air.
He hadn't planned on responding, but there were too many peculiar things about Soong Yu. He needed to figure out what she was really up to.
Having been taken advantage of once was enough; he wouldn't allow it to happen again. Until he understood her intentions, he couldn't rush into ending the marriage. What if she took the money and then clung to him and his family?
As Huo Tian pondered this, he headed out, got into his car, and drove away.
After Huo Tian left, Huo Zhen called out, "Soong..."
Soong Yu responded and came out.
"Sit down and eat."
Soong Yu hesitated for a moment but then decided not to be overly polite. She went to the kitchen, served herself a bowl of porridge, and began eating.
The two ate in silence, neither speaking a word.
Huo Zhen glanced at her a few times, noticing she was much quieter than before. His feelings were mixed; perhaps she'd learned some lessons from her experiences and wasn't as stubborn anymore.
Huo Zhen didn't say much either. After finishing his meal, he stood up. "I'm going to find Mr. Wang and the others..."
"Do you want me to drive you?"
"No need, it's not far."
Soong Yu didn't insist.
Once Huo Zhen left, Soong Yu quickly finished eating and cleaned up the kitchen. Only then did she have time to sort through the original owner's belongings.
While organizing the clothes, she discovered some letters. She hesitated but decided to open them. By the time she finished reading the last letter, her mind was buzzing.
The last letter was from the original owner's brother, saying he had just gotten married and planned to come to the city with his wife to find work. They were preparing to leave in a month. He mentioned that since she was now married to Huo Tian, as part of the Huo family, she should be able to help them find good jobs through connections.
Soong Yu checked the date on the letter. It was exactly a month ago, meaning the brother and sister-in-law could arrive in the city any day now.
She quickly looked at the envelope. The original owner's hometown was up north, not far from the city. They might arrive as soon as tomorrow.
Just as she was thinking, the phone at home rang. Soong Yu put down the letter and picked it up.
As soon as she answered, a gruff man's voice came through. "Hey, is this my sister, Soong Yu?"
Soong Yu felt a pang of bitterness in her heart; it was just her luck. "Yes, it's me," she replied in standard English, unable to mimic the accent from the other side.
"Sis, your sister-in-law and I are catching the train tonight. We should be there by tomorrow afternoon. Can you pick us up?"
Soong Yu rubbed her forehead. With everything going on, her brother and sister-in-law visiting was just the kind of thing that would happen when it rains, it pours...
