C6 Being Scolded!
Soong Yu rolled her eyes dramatically and pulled the paper closer to examine it. All the conditions Huo Tian had promised were clearly listed.
"Add the part about not marrying Yang Zhenzhen," Soong Yu insisted. This was essential for avenging the original owner.
Huo Tian frowned at her. "I said I wouldn't, and I mean it. Why don't you believe me?"
Soong Yu scoffed, "A man's word is worth nothing. I trust what's written down."
Huo Tian felt a pang of frustration at her words and snatched the agreement from her hand, tossing it aside.
Soong Yu met his gaze defiantly.
Huo Tian noticed that this woman had grown bolder in recent days.
After a few seconds of staring each other down, he nodded. He had no intention of getting involved with Yang Zhenzhen again. He didn't care about her family background, but character mattered. Her feigning illness to shirk responsibility was enough for him to cut ties. He disliked Soong Yu for her ruthless tactics as well.
"Fine, I'll add it. If you have any other demands, now's the time to speak up. This is your only chance."
He was mocking her.
Soong Yu mimicked his swagger, opening the car door with one hand and grabbing a cloth bag with the other as she stepped out. "You better hurry. I'm not known for my patience." With that, she walked toward the house without giving Huo Tian another glance.
She walked with her back straight, exuding confidence.
She didn't see Huo Tian's face darken with anger in the car. This woman... she really dared to speak her mind. He couldn't wait to finalize the divorce.
Huo Tian angrily turned the car around and drove off.
Once inside the compound, Soong Yu was taken aback.
This was where higher-ranking officials lived, so each house was a standalone unit, and they all looked almost identical.
She looked around, realizing she couldn't distinguish which one belonged to the Huo family.
Soong Yu racked her brain, trying to recall and headed to the right based on her memory.
After walking a couple hundred yards, Soong Yu found herself at a crossroads, completely stumped. She could only remember so much—was it the house on the left or the one on the right? She had no idea.
What should she do now?
As Soong Yu stood there, quite a few people passed by, pointing and whispering about her. She could easily guess what they were saying, thanks to Huo Ning's influence. Almost everyone around here knew how she supposedly tricked Huo Tian into marrying her.
"That's the maid who shamelessly wanted to become the Huo family's granddaughter-in-law..."
"And she actually did become a Huo family daughter-in-law."
"Shameless, right? When people have no shame, there's nothing they won't do. It's just because Huo Yuan's parents aren't around anymore. If they were, would this little maid dare to be so bold? I always opposed Elder Huo treating this maid so well. You can't be too nice to folks like that from the countryside, or they'll forget their place."
"Keep your voice down, she might hear you."
"Ha, if she had the nerve to do it, why should I be afraid of her hearing it? I'll say it loud and clear. What’s she gonna do, confront me? I'd like to see her try." The person grew louder as they spoke, even spitting on the ground as they passed Soong Yu.
Soong Yu said nothing. This was the mess the original Soong Yu had made, and she had to bear it.
Left? Right?
As she was still debating, two more people approached. They were younger, clearly housemaids or helpers. Without a word, they spat in her direction. "She's the troublemaker. Because of her, our old lady is considering firing me, saying she wants to hire an older maid instead, afraid I might pick up her bad habits."
"Exactly. Xiao Lan and Xiao Fang were both let go because their employers had grown sons..."
"Troublemaker... ugh, shameless..." They spat again as they walked past Soong Yu.
Soong Yu didn't argue or speak up. She deserved it.
As the two people walked away, Soong Yu took a deep breath and decided to choose the place on the left, hoping for the best.
Just as she was about to step forward, she heard a young girl's voice behind her, "So, how does it feel to be talked about behind your back?"
Soong Yu turned around and saw a girl with two pigtails and a backpack, around thirteen or fourteen years old, with a mischievous look in her eyes.
It was Huo Ning.
Huo Ning noticed Soong Yu's silence and let out a mocking laugh, "How are you still alive? Why haven't you just disappeared already? It would save our family a lot of trouble."
With that, Huo Ning scoffed and headed towards the house on the right.
Only after seeing Huo Ning open the door did Soong Yu follow her.
Just as she reached the door, Huo Ning slammed it shut right in her face.
