C10 The Investigation Results!
"Ready for a match? It's been ages since I last worked out," Yizhou said, stretching his arms.
"Bring it on. I won't lose to you this time. It's been so long, and you always come here when something's on your mind. Some things never change," Ling remarked. He couldn't help but admire how a woman could make Yizhou so preoccupied. He suddenly had a newfound respect for Nannan, who had effortlessly captivated Yizhou and even caused him some distress.
"Is that so? Prepare to be defeated," Yizhou challenged. It had indeed been a while since he last exercised, spending most of his days cooped up in the office. He wondered if he had lost his edge.
Over the years, their friendship had deepened into something akin to family. No matter what happened, they always had each other's backs unconditionally.
That night, the two men lay on the track, drenched in sweat. If it weren't for summer break, they wouldn't have been able to get in. Their school days were the best and simplest times of their lives.
"To be honest, Yizhou, I always thought you'd end up a bachelor. I've never seen you take an interest in any girl or get caught up over one. If not for this time, I'd have thought something was wrong with you," Ling said. Indeed, Yizhou had always been distant, even tearing up a girl's love letter in front of everyone, leaving her no dignity. By the time they were about to graduate college, no girl dared approach him.
"Am I really caught up?" Yizhou didn't think he was particularly invested in Nannan. Marrying her was just a way to fend off Yu'er.
"We know each other too well. I know you only come back here when something's bothering you. Yu'er has been after you for ages. Marrying Nannan to fend off Yu'er is just an excuse. Yizhou, maybe you haven't even realized it yourself..."
"Alright, I'm going to get some water. I'm thirsty," Yizhou said, getting up and heading off campus. There was no way he could like that woman. It was impossible. She had caused him so much trouble. How could he like her? It was just that she had her own child, and he happened to need a partner. Yizhou tried to convince himself.
"Ugh," Yizhou sighed, following along. He was curious to see how long Zheng Yizhou could keep up his tough act. That girl really had some guts. When he found out she had actually spent the night with Zheng Yizhou, he was impressed. She was the first to ever treat him like that. Maybe that was what made her stand out.
"Zheng Yizhou, I've got the info. I'll send it to you in a bit, but don't get mad." As soon as he got home, the results were in. Yizhou was in this line of work, and you needed some skills to make it here.
"Okay." Zheng Yizhou glanced outside. What kind of girl was Xia Nannan, really? He looked at the information on his computer screen and quietly shut it down. Interesting, Xia Nannan. He hadn't expected her to be so bold.
"Hey, Zheng Yizhou, what are you planning to do next?" Yizhou sent another message shortly after. He wasn't sure what Zheng Yizhou would do, and suddenly he felt a bit worried for Xia Nannan. After all, Zheng Yizhou wasn't someone you messed with lightly.
"Not much to do. We're already married. Can you help me buy two rings? They need to be identical, but one should be a high-quality replica. I want to test her." For some reason, Zheng Yizhou couldn't bring himself to be harsh with her. Even though she had deceived him, he didn't want to expose her.
"You must like her, for sure," Yizhou stated confidently. This wasn't typical of Zheng Yizhou at all. What kind of magic did Xia Nannan have to make him so accommodating?
"Get lost," Zheng Yizhou snapped, shutting off his phone, ignoring Yizhou. He asked him to check something, and now he was talking too much. There was no way he liked Xia Nannan; she often annoyed him, and he couldn't stand her.
"Hey, Grandpa." Zheng Yizhou answered the call, guessing his grandfather had already heard the news. With something that big, how could his mom not tell him?
"Your mom mentioned you brought a girl home today. If you like her, bring her over to meet your grandpa. I'll support your decision," Mr. Zheng said, looking calm. He didn't mind who his grandson chose as long as he was happy. That evening, Yizhou's mom complained endlessly, badmouthing Xia Nannan. She had always hoped for Deng Yu'er to be her daughter-in-law, but she needed to consider Yizhou's feelings too.
"I understand. I'll bring her over tomorrow for you to meet. I have to get back to work now; we can talk more tomorrow." Yizhou hung up the phone and lazily sprawled on the bed, his scent a mix of natural masculinity and cologne.
Early the next morning, Nannan was unceremoniously dragged out of bed, missing out on sleeping in again. Ever since she arrived, she hadn't had a good night's sleep. Yizhou was definitely doing this on purpose.
"What now?" Nannan asked weakly, feeling exhausted from the daily disruptions.
"My grandpa wants to meet you," Yizhou replied, already seated and enjoying the breakfast the driver had just brought in.
"We should have done this yesterday. Now we have to make another trip," Nannan said, sitting down. She reminded herself that she chose this path and had to see it through.
"You don't have that privilege. If it weren't for my grandpa wanting to meet you, do you really think marrying in makes you part of the family?" Yizhou mocked, viewing her as just another gold-digger who fancied herself the lady of the house.
"What's with the attitude? You weren't saying this yesterday. If I'm not family, why give me a card?" Nannan glared at him, feeling the sting of his words.
"Even keeping a mistress costs money," Yizhou retorted. Ever since discovering her fake pregnancy, he couldn't bring himself to like her. She had schemed to marry him, and he felt he was already being merciful by not doing worse.
"Wow, you're really generous. I'm heading upstairs," Xia Nannan said with a smile, wondering if her true nature was showing. Did they think she was no longer useful? She had thought Zheng Yizhou was different from his mother.
Looking at herself in the mirror, Xia Nannan reminded herself to stay calm, even when angry. Once she cleared her mom's name, she'd leave and wouldn't have to put up with this anymore.
In no time, Xia Nannan had tidied up. The clothes she wore were the ones Zheng Yizhou bought her yesterday, since she didn't have anything nicer at the moment. After taking care of everything, she'd go home to get her own things. With light makeup enhancing her already stunning features, she exuded a unique feminine charm.
