C11 The Marriage Was Not to be Consummated!

Zheng Yizhou glanced at Xia Nannan, momentarily distracted. Xia Nannan was quite pretty, but her mother... wasn't she kicked out for cheating? It seemed like Xia Nannan hadn't turned out much better.

"Let's go." Xia Nannan walked downstairs, deliberately bypassing Zheng Yizhou. She had her pride, after all.

At the Zheng family home, the whole family was gathered in the living room, including Deng Yu'er. After all, she was the daughter-in-law Zheng's mother had her heart set on, and she was welcome even for family matters.

"This must be Xia Nannan?" Mr. Zheng looked at her, thinking she was quite good-looking. For some reason, she seemed vaguely familiar.

"Yes, hello, Grandpa," Xia Nannan replied politely.

"You're being polite today, but yesterday you weren't so nice to me. Dad, you wouldn't believe how she upset me yesterday. She hasn't even married in yet, and she's already so arrogant. If she does, won't she turn our house upside down and walk all over us?" Zheng's mother said irritably. Who was bullying whom yesterday was still up for debate, but Zheng's mother sure knew how to twist things.

"Alright, calm down. You've been going on since yesterday. I'm just asking, aren't I? Kid, come with me for a moment," Mr. Zheng said impatiently. He knew Zheng's mother's personality all too well. She had already decided Deng Yu'er was her daughter-in-law and likely hadn't been too kind to Xia Nannan.

"Okay." Xia Nannan nodded, following Mr. Zheng. He seemed like a nice person, much better than the rest of the family.

"Child, I heard you're pregnant. Is that true?" Mr. Zheng asked, determined not to let his granddaughter-in-law suffer if she was indeed expecting.

Xia Nannan nodded, feeling guilty for deceiving him. She hoped he could forgive her in the future. Faced with such kindness, she found it hard to be ruthless.

"Don't worry, Grandpa will stand up for you. If Yizhou's mom gives you a hard time, bear with it if you can. If not, just tell Grandpa. Yizhou's dad passed away early, and it's not easy for her as a single mom." Thinking about it, Mr. Zheng's eyes welled up. Yizhou's dad had been gone for many years, and his last wish was to take good care of Yizhou's mom, so they've always been very accommodating to her.

"I understand," Nannan nodded. Mr. Zheng didn't know the truth. Yizhou's mom had done so many bad things to her own mom. How could she let that go? She absolutely wouldn't.

"Alright, let's head downstairs." Mr. Zheng stood up, and Nannan quickly supported him. "I'm sorry, I can't keep my promise. I can't just let it go, especially since it cost my mom her life."

"You don't need to help him; I can do it." As soon as they stepped out, Yizhou's mom saw Nannan helping Mr. Zheng and hurried over to push her away.

Nannan didn't mind. She knew what kind of person Yizhou's mom was. Sooner or later, she'd have to face the consequences.

"What did Grandpa say to you?" Yizhou asked curiously. Nannan's skills were impressive; even his grandpa seemed to be on her side. Seeing how close they were earlier, he figured Grandpa had already agreed.

"What could he say? He agreed," Nannan replied, rolling her eyes, not wanting to engage with him. He was just being unreasonable.

"We'll hold the wedding on my 80th birthday. We can't treat the Zheng family's daughter-in-law poorly," Mr. Zheng announced.

"Dad," Yizhou's mom exclaimed. She disagreed. What about Deng Yu'er?

"I don't agree either. A wedding should be about love. I only mentioned a wedding because I was confused at the time. I married her just to make up for a mistake I made when I was drunk," Yizhou suddenly declared. He wanted to embarrass Nannan, to show her the consequences of crossing him.

"Zheng Yizhou, you're being too much," Xia Nannan glared at him, wondering how someone could change their attitude so quickly.

"I always wondered why Yizhou would marry you. Tell me, did you take advantage of him when he was drunk?" Deng Yu'er clung to this idea like a lifeline. It gave her hope that Yizhou didn't really like Xia Nannan.

"Enough! I'm not going through with this wedding, okay? Are you happy now, Zheng Yizhou?" Xia Nannan stormed out. She had other options and refused to be treated this way.

"Get out of here! We don't welcome women like you," Deng Yu'er shouted after her, feeling much better knowing Yizhou didn't like Xia Nannan.

"Ridiculous! Get on your knees," Mr. Zheng scolded, shocked that Yizhou could treat a girl like this, especially after getting her pregnant.

"No way, Yizhou did nothing wrong. It was that girl who took advantage of him when he was drunk," Zheng's mother interjected, wondering why Mr. Zheng was defending that girl.

"What about our family's reputation? You can't just decide not to marry her. This wedding must happen, and it should be a grand one," Mr. Zheng reprimanded Yizhou. A girl wouldn't risk her reputation like that, and their family wasn't irresponsible.

Mr. Zheng, leaning on his cane, struck Yizhou. Zheng's mother quickly shielded him, blaming the chaos on that wild girl. Her dislike for Xia Nannan grew.

"I might as well beat some sense into you. Is this how I raised you?" Mr. Zheng fumed, coughing a little.

"Stop it!" Deng Yu'er suddenly hugged Yizhou, taking a hit from the cane.

"Yu'er!" Zheng's mother rushed to pull her away, lamenting that they were letting a good daughter-in-law slip away for that wild girl. What spell had that girl cast on Mr. Zheng?

"I got it, I'll go find her. Yu'er, wait at home, and I'll take you to the hospital soon," Yizhou said loudly. He was curious why his grandfather was so fond of Nannan; he had to admit, she was quite skillful.

Yizhou hadn't been out long when he spotted Nannan sitting alone by the roadside, looking a bit forlorn. She was debating whether to return since her bag was still at Yizhou's house, and without pockets, she had no money to get home.

"Nannan," Yizhou called out as he walked toward her, surprised she hadn't left yet.

"What are you doing here?" Nannan replied irritably. The last person she wanted to see was him. Since that morning, he seemed like a completely different person.
