C1 The Only Person He Missed
Zhai Yaotian was a perfect man in almost every aspect. Not only did he have a face that was carved by the heavens itself, but he also had the wallet to match. He had it all–all except one thing, a wife that he loved. After all, Jian Jia knew for a fact that he didn't love her.
Although they had known each other for six years, married for three, he had never changed.
The late autumn breeze blew against the windowpane, howling through the night. It was cold. However, the freezing temperature couldn't even match the rapid drop in their atmosphere the moment the door had opened.
At exactly 11:59 P.M., Zhai Yaotian returned home.
The red and black racing suit hugged his figure quite well, highlighting his tall figure and emphasizing his muscled arms. Despite looking exhausted, he looked like he had just stepped out from a photoshoot. Even after so many years, his handsomeness remained the same.
"Yaotian, you just came back–wait, you're wearing that tracksuit again. Were you practicing? Do you know how cold it is out there?"
The moment Jian Jia had seen him, she quickly set the soup she had just boiled on the table and raced into the shelf to grab a pair of slippers for him. Her pale face was strained with worry as she bent down.
"I don't need you to worry about me." While some husbands would coddle their wives and ease their worries, he gazed at her bent posture like he was looking at a stranger. His voice was indifferent, and his face showed no emotions.
His words were like a thousand knives stabbing straight into her heart. Her smile faltered a bit, but she didn't say another word.
What's new? It had been three years, yet he still hated her.
Straightening her back, she helplessly pinched the sides of her shirt. 'Stay calm,' she told herself over and over again, resisting the urge to sniffle. "I've made soup for you," she slowly said. "Why don't I get it for you?"
She was just about to walk into the kitchen when he grabbed her wrist.
"I heard that you complained to that upstart dad of yours about our marriage." Ignoring the sourness in her eyes, he took another step forward. His words became even more chilling. "You've also told my mother that I haven't touched you since the day we've gotten married."
"I–" Before she could say anything, the man had already pushed her up to the side of the wall. She winced in pain as her back slammed against the hard pavement, but he didn't seem bothered. Instead, he lifted his hand and pinched the corner of her chin.
"Jian Jia, tell me, do you really like me so much that you'd have to tamper with Lanyi's car? Tell me, was it even worth it? Hmm? To have me?" Although his face remained indifferent, his eyes were practically flashing with anger–like a storm that was just waiting to strike.
She winced, struggling to blink the bitter tears away, only to fail. The best she could do was avoid his startling gaze.
"I didn't–"
"Bullshit." Zhai Yaotian snorted, releasing his hold of her. She stumbled back in the process.
"Aren't you going to be the future CEO of the Thunder Car Club? Yet you don't even have the balls to admit your own mistakes. Pathetic! Get the hell out of my sight!"
He sneered coldly and stomped straight into the other side of the room. Slam! The door banged shut, and its sound echoed throughout the quiet household.
The sound of the door closing was like a slap to her face.
Pain racked over her body, and she couldn't help but squeeze her eyes shut. Was this what she had wanted? From him? Did she really love him that much? All his words rushed into the back of her mind, and she took a deep breath.
They had been married for three years, yet he always treated her the same way. Every single day, he'd remind her of the incident and leave her there to reflect on their past. Although she was used to it, that didn't mean that the pain had dissipated.
That night, she didn't sleep a wink.
All she wanted was to wait for the next day to make a sumptuous breakfast for Zhai Yaotian. "He may hate me now, but he won't hate me forever," she told herself, clutching her pillows as the first creek of sunlight seared through the curtains.
However, just as she raced down the steps, she saw that his slippers were already on the shoe rack. The man was nowhere to be seen.
"Miss Jian Jia." Mrs. Zhang, the housekeeper, quickly walked up to her in greeting.
She didn't dare to raise her head as she stated, "I've already prepared breakfast for you, Madame. I'm just keeping it warm in the pot."
After all, Mrs. Zhang knew what kind of person she was–at least, according to the rumors that she had heard. Before their marriage, Zhai Yaotian had a girlfriend. She was also an accomplished racecar driver–beautiful, too. They were happy, a lot of people had said, and that had caused Jian Jia to become vengeful over the young woman. It was said that she had secretly ordered people to tamper with the woman's car, causing her to die in the process.
That was why he had hated her with all his heart.
Being their caretaker for quite some time, Mrs. Zhang felt as if she had always been walking on thin ice.
Although she worked for Zhai Yaotian solely, she knew that if she were to accidentally offend Jian Jia, her life here would be difficult. After all, the woman always had the reputation of getting what she wanted.
"What time did he leave?" she asked.
"He left right after dawn to..." Suddenly, Mrs. Zhang fell silent.
Jian Jia paused. Silence overwhelmed them before she finally spoke, "He went to the cemetery again?"
He went right after dawn after all. That was the only place that could make him leave so early. It was also the only place that could make him so anxious. The hold she had on the chopsticks quivered dangerously.
"I...Yes, Madame." Mrs. Zhang didn't dare breathe as she waited for her response.
"All right. Please, go back to your work." With a light sigh, she waved her hand and dismissed the middle-aged woman.
In an instant, the food didn't look so delectable anymore.
Why would she be hungry when her husband was still visiting Hsu Lanyi?
Even the thought of the name was enough to turn her blood cold, and she couldn't help but grit her teeth.
Hsu Lanyi was Zhai Yaotian's first love, the person who he had loved the most.
She was also the only person he had missed the most.
