C20 Remember Brotherinlaw Is Ye Junhao!
Mu Xiaohuan approached and took a seat beside her mother. She was about to speak when her mother subtly tugged at her, causing the words to swirl in her mouth before she spoke, transforming into something entirely different.
"Sis, guess who I saw while I was out shopping yesterday?"
Mu Chuchen gracefully continued her breakfast in front of them, without so much as inquiring if they had already eaten.
Upon hearing Mu Xiaohuan's words, Mu Chuchen didn't look up, responding nonchalantly, "Who? You're being quite secretive."
"Sis, take a guess."
"I don't have time for this."
Mu Xiaohuan was taken aback.
Su Shu chimed in with a smile, addressing Mu Chuchen, "Chuchen, Xiaohuan mentioned she saw Chung Sen."
All the while, Su Shu's gaze was fixed on Mu Chuchen, eager to catch any flicker of emotion.
Chung Sen?
Mu Chuchen paused mid-bite.
What was Chung Sen doing in Jin City?
She recalled he wasn't due back for another two years.
"Chuchen, Chung Sen must have returned for you. You've never stopped thinking about him, and the arranged marriage with the Ye Family has been unfair to you. But remember, it was your mother's arrangement before she passed. I can't openly go against it," Su Shu said, her voice tinged with sympathy.
Seeing Mu Chuchen lost in thought, Su Shu swiftly shifted the conversation. "Now, knowing you're unhappy, I deeply regret it. If you wish to rekindle things with Chung Sen, I'll support you wholeheartedly, even if it means facing your father's wrath."
"A marriage without love is bound to be miserable. You've endured so much over the years."
Suppressing the surge of resentment within her, Mu Chuchen asked with composure, "Xiaohuan, are you certain the person you saw was Chung Sen?"
This turn of events was new to her.
"Sis, I'm positive it was Chung Sen. He's the one you adored, the man I respected as a brother-in-law. There's no way I could mistake him."
Mu Xiaohuan then retrieved a small slip of paper from her purse and handed it to Mu Chuchen, "Sis, this is Chung Sen's new contact number. He asked me to pass it along to you."
Mu Chuchen declined the note. "Just put it down."
She bowed her head and continued with her breakfast.
Mu Xiaohuan had assumed that with Chung Sen's whereabouts and contact details, her sister would be overjoyed and eager to seek him out. However, Mu Chuchen's reaction was unexpected.
There was no excitement, no sense of urgency.
She ate her breakfast with grace and composure.
After finishing her meal, Mu Chuchen called for Madam Hee, who promptly arrived to clear away the dishes.
"Xiaohuan."
Mu Chuchen wiped her mouth with a napkin before emphasizing to her sister, "Your brother-in-law is Ye Junhao, remember that."
Madam Hee gave Mu Xiaohuan a puzzled glance.
Mu Xiaohuan's face turned into a kaleidoscope of colors, emotions flickering rapidly.
"Ms. Su, I'm very happy now. Chung Sen is part of my past, and everyone has a past. It's behind me now, and there's no possibility of rekindling anything with him. Thank you for your good intentions, though," she said graciously.
Madam Hee's ears perked up.
What exactly had Mrs. Mu and Second Lady Mu discussed?
It sounded as if there were insinuations of marital discord.
Su Shu initially stiffened, then smiled and said, "That's wonderful. Jun Hao is so good to you; you must treasure the one you're with."
A flicker of animosity crossed Mu Chuchen's eyes.
The old are indeed cunning. Su Shu had managed to keep her father's twenty-year affair during his marriage a secret from her mother until her dying day – she certainly had her ways.
"Thank you, Ms. Su. I will indeed cherish the one I'm with. Did you need something from me?" Mu Chuchen thought it best not to confront Su Shu's schemes head-on just yet. She would bide her time.
After all, when facing an enemy, a swift cut is too merciful. It's far more torturous to slice slowly, to flay the flesh and pare the bone – that is a fate worse than death.
