C18 Unexpected

"Oh." Well, Moo Nuannuan wasn't expecting that harsh response. She immediately withdrew from the chair, looking as if she had just been electrocuted by him. Pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose, she simply bowed her head at his snappy insult, not really knowing what else to say. Despite this, she didn't feel remotely surprised at his reaction, given that these were usually the words she had heard all her life.

Moo Wanqi was supposed to be his bride–her beautiful sister was supposed to be gracing his bedside every night, staring at his face as if he were a gift from the heavens. Yet, he was stuck with her–a country bumpkin who was better off living in the rural sides of the country with her damp hair and seemingly freckled cheeks. She understood why he despised her that much.

Even as he had insulted her, she didn't feel anything but complete indifference.

"If that's it, I'll be heading out first," she slowly said.

Seeing as he still hadn't replied, she turned around and walked straight out of the study.

It was only when the door was closed did Mu Tingxiao finally turned his chair around. His eyes squinted at the hard oak, and his lips were pursed.

This was the first time such a woman had responded to him. Not only did she say that she didn't care for his appearance, but she also didn't bother defending herself when he had insulted her. He tilted his head. The woman was ugly, but there was something about the way her mind had worked that intrigued him even more. His fingers twisted and turned around his pen. It seemed he had to put on an act even longer.

Since it was early, Moo Nuannuan didn't plan on heading back to the Master Bedroom.

Instead, she stayed in the living room, lounging on the couch and watching the television. The bright colors flashed across her eyes as she increased the volume, blocking the deathly silence as much as she could. The plush sofa and the clean tiles were definitely different from the dingy apartment that she was staying at. It was also quite peaceful compared to the raging and clanging of metal that greeted her at night back there.

A surge of satisfaction shot through her veins.

Although Mu Tingxiao hated her with a passion, he was still willing to strike a conversation with her. Not only that, but he didn't make things difficult for her by giving her all this time to lounge around and enjoy her time. This was actually the most freedom she had in all the years of her life!

At this point, he was already far better than any of her family members.

Just as she was enjoying the show, someone whistled behind her.

Moo Nuannuan didn't move at first, thinking that her own imagination was playing tricks on her, but when the whistling continued, she finally turned around. There, in all his glory, was Mu Jiachen. He looked a bit better compared to the last time she had seen him. He had changed out of his blood-soaked shirt and his complexion had already recovered. Even after everything, the smirk playing on his lips was still intact.

She clenched her fists. What the hell was he doing here?

"We last saw each other a few hours ago, and you've already forgotten about me?" Mu Tingxiao placed a hand on his chest. "Sister-in-law, I'm hurt."

"What are you doing here?"

"My mother is Tingxiao's Aunt, so I'm allowed to stay here for a few days." He slowly approached her, and the playfulness in his eyes still hadn't receded. He was in a far better mood compared to the last time they had seen each other too. Her fingers twitched. Moo Nuannuan didn't know if she should feel relieved that he had gotten better or be upset by the fact that he hadn't died ina hole. "Is there a problem?"

Of course Mu Tingxiao didn't have a problem with it. After all, they were related.

She, on the other hand, wanted him gone.

Mu Jiachen had already kissed her before, and there was no way in hell she was going to let go of that this easily–not if they were living in the same villa. Her lips tingled from the memory, but she pushed the thought away. Even if Mu Tingxiao was already in the villa, she doubted that his presence would be able to stop his cousin, given his naturally reckless personality. And given their close nature, her husband would side with him than with her.

"No," she said bluntly, not bothering to say anything more.

Without another word, Moo Nuannuan headed up the long staircase, lowering her head. It seemed that even the living room wasn't safe with him around.

However, she had underestimated his shamelessness.

She hadn't taken two steps to the staircase when Mu Jiachen grabbed her wrist. His thumb ambiguously trailed down her delicate wrist, and she couldn't help but shiver. He leaned over until they were at eye-level, staring at her as if she was a treasure chest trapped in between the rocks. "I haven't eaten dinner yet," he whispered, like a child tugging on his mother's shirt. "Are you just going to let me starve to death? I'm still injured, you know."

Right...his injury. That bastard!

He used his other hand to touch the back of her head, and his thin lips brushed against her earlobe. "Make me something to eat." The corners of his mouth twitched. "I'll be waiting for you."

Moo Nuannuan's entire body stiffened in response. Just as she was about to push him away, she saw a glimpse of Shi Ye coming down from the staircase. Her expression change to that of anxiety as she shook off his hold, moving to the side. The last thing she needed was to make Mu Tingxiao hate her even more...after all the freedom he already allowed her to have. Her fingers shook.

He simply smiled at her response. "Sister-in-law, hurry up. I'm hungry," he called at her flustered figure.

This was the first time Shi Ye had ever seen his boss like this. The corners of his lips twitched, and he turned his head to the side. Who would've thought that such an intimidating man would degrade himself just to playfully flirt with a woman already designated to be his wife? What the heck was he playing at? Something rumbled in his chest, but Shi Ye held himself together.

Mu Tingxiao turned to the side. "What's with that look on your face?"

"Nothing, nothing."

Instead of concentrating on his job, his boss decided to pretend to be Mu Tingxiao's cousin and flirt with his wife. As if the poor woman didn't have enough problems biting her in every corner.

Could it be that the taboo had turned him on?

No, his boss wasn't that sick in the head.

Even then, Shi Ye was intrigued. He had served Mu Tingxiao for years, and this was the first time he had ever looked directly at a woman or even flirted with her to this extent.

Although Moo Nuannuan looked a little rough around the edges, his boss treated her differently.
