C16 Chapter 16
It was a little after eleven in the morning, and I was sleeping like a baby in my dorm when Liang Jing and Mo Ningning—those two tyrants—yanked me out of bed.
“Early? Do you even know what time it is? It’s already eleven!” Liang Jing jabbed a finger toward my head, furious. “How long has it been since you last slept?”
Me: “...”
“Seriously, what do you want? If it’s nothing, I’m going back to sleep!” I don’t know what’s been up with me these past few days—maybe it was that whole black cat incident—but I could sleep forever.
Mo Ningning toyed with her bangs, flashed a charming smile, and said slowly, “Wu Xiaogang, listen up. Starting now, you’re the ferryman of our ghost-hunting squad. From here on out, you’re in charge of catching ghosts!”
Me: “Oh. Ohhh...”
Wait—what? Ghost-hunting squad? Ferryman? What are these two up to now?!
“Cut the crap and tell me the truth. What are you really trying to pull? Talk!”
Seeing how serious I was, Mo Ningning instantly turned into the ice queen everyone knew. She shot me a cold look, pouted, and said with pure disdain, “Wu Xiaogang, quit trying to act all deep. You’ve got nothing to do but sleep anyway.”
Then Liang Jing cut in from the side. “So we found you an awesome job—perfect for your major!”
My major? My major is socialist economics and Marxist theory philosophy. Is there really a job out there that fits that?
But one look at their faces told me it wasn’t going to be that simple.
“Look, you two—just say it. Don’t dance around it.”
Liang Jing looked like she’d been waiting to let it out. “Wu Xiaogang, Wu Xiaogang… do you have any idea what an amazing job I found for you?”
Me: “What kind of job is this, exactly?!”
“Why are you snapping? Who do you think you are? Just because you can catch a ghost or two doesn’t make you special. So yeah—she and I started this ghost-hunting squad to keep you fed!”
After Mo Ningning said that, I was instantly speechless. So these two little tyrants had officially rebranded my entire profession into ghost hunting?!
Me: “No! Absolutely not! And honestly, I don’t even know how to catch ghosts!”
Liang Jing: “What’s wrong, Wu Xiaogang? Been a few days since I ‘helped’ you loosen up your joints. Feeling brave again—itching for another lesson?”
Thinking back to the first time I met Liang Jing, I couldn’t help but shiver—there was even a chill in a very unfortunate place.
“Fine, fine. Whatever you say. But let’s make one thing clear—don’t make things harder for me.”
Mo Ningning snorted. “Do we look like the kind of people who’d cause trouble for you?”
In my head: Sure, sure... you two are angels. Like I don’t remember which two “big sisters” were already sprawled on the ground before the fight even started.
Then the two of them dragged me to an unused private office just outside the school.
Everything inside was arranged perfectly, and the floor was so clean it made me look bad. Not that I’d had time to wash my face today—thanks to these two.
“Wu Xiaogang, did you see it at the entrance? I personally made a couplet to drum up business for our ghost-hunting squad!”
Me: “...I didn’t see anything when we came in.”
Then my skinny body got yanked straight to the office door by Liang Jing.
A new chapter for the Ghost-Hunting Squad!”
Me: “...”
“Miss Mo, you’re telling me you wrote this yourself? The more I read it, the more it sounds like Liang Jing’s style.”
Mo Ningning looked like she was speaking up for Liang Jing. “Mind your business! What, you don’t like it? I just wanted you to see it. Your opinion isn’t that important.”
“...What the heck?! I’m the one catching the ghosts here—so why do you two get to decide everything?” Still, after thinking it over, I figured I’d better not mess with these two divas.
“Alright! Now I announce...” Liang Jing finished the sentence and shot Mo Ningning a look. Mo Ningning immediately followed up, “Our Ghost-Hunting Squad is officially established!”
“Wu Xiaogang! Go outside and set off some firecrackers to celebrate our Ghost-Hunting Squad!”
Me: “...Fine, fine, fine. Whatever you two say goes!”
After I finished setting them off, I asked the two divas, confused—
“Liang Jing, Mo Ningning—what exactly are you two in charge of?”
Mo Ningning answered without hesitation, “Don’t even think about it. I’m in charge of the money—income and expenses!”
Liang Jing looked like she wanted to claim finances too, but after hearing Mo Ningning call it first, she lowered her head and started thinking hard.
