C19 Chapter 19

After the female ghost finished talking, I nodded. What she said was basically right—because I already knew.

From the moment I first saw her, I could tell she’d never hurt anyone. I couldn’t sense even a trace of that dark, violent energy on her.

Anyone who’s studied even a little of this stuff knows it: someone who’s killed carries a certain murderous aura. After they take a life, that aura naturally turns into something far worse. Ghosts are no exception.

She glanced at the three of us and began telling the story of her life—

Her name was Xiao Mo. One day, she met her boyfriend, and the two of them fell hard for each other. But after he took her virginity, he turned around the very next day and coldly broke up with her.

Xiao Mo spent every day thinking about how to get back together. Whatever he liked, she tried to become. But nothing worked—she couldn’t win him back.

Then one weekend, she saw him out shopping with another girl. Xiao Mo couldn’t hold it in. In front of a crowd, she blew up and humiliated him. The other girl, furious at the scene, stormed off.

Xiao Mo thought that was the end of it. But the guy tracked her down, lured her to a secluded place, and murdered her.

Poor Xiao Mo—by now she was practically a wandering spirit. And even so, she still couldn’t let that man go. That was why she came back.

After she finished, I tested the waters and asked, “The man you’re talking about… that’s Mr. Zhou in this dorm, isn’t it?”

She gave me a look that said more than words, then nodded slightly.

“I’m not sure what I’m supposed to call you,” I said. “I’ll just call you ma’am. Ma’am—why come back at all? Why not move on? What do you still want with a guy like that?! If it were me, I’d have taken care of him a long time ago.”

Liang Jing, who’d always had a fiery temper, suddenly blurted out, and even though her words were harsh, she wasn’t wrong—guys like that don’t deserve anyone’s pity.

The ghost hesitated and said, “I want to let him go, but I just can’t. It’s like there’s a knot in my heart.”

“Knot or not, you need to remember this: he’s not coming back. And even if you stayed by his side, what would it change? You feel sorry for him—but did he feel sorry for you when he killed you?!”

Mo Ningning was clearly worked up when she said it.

After Mo Ningning finished, the ghost fell silent. Then she nodded at us and said, “Thank you. Thank you for helping me like this—especially you, Wu Xiaogang!”

What none of us saw coming was that the ghost took advantage of a moment when I wasn’t paying attention and lightly kissed me. Oh, come on—I immediately took a step back.

I can’t believe I, Wu Xiaogang, a top-tier member of a family that hunts man-eating spirits, actually lost my first kiss to a ghost. No—technically, to her lips!

How am I supposed to show my face after this? The two women beside me had obviously seen the whole thing, and they were snickering to themselves.

“Don’t worry, and don’t be scared. That kiss will only do you good—no harm. And now I have to go. Thank you again. Goodbye.”

After she said that, she faded away on the spot. Right before she disappeared, I could’ve sworn I saw her waving goodbye to someone inside the men’s dorm.

Ugh. Fine—she kissed me, whatever. But then she had to say it would “do me good.” Since when? My dad never mentioned anything like that growing up. I had no idea what she meant.

Once it was all over, the three of us from the ghost-hunting squad hurried back to our cramped little office.

For some reason, none of us said a word all night. We slept straight through until noon the next day.

“Wake up! Xiaogang! Do you realize we forgot to get paid by that guy Zhou?! Get up—go collect!”

Hearing Liang Jing’s booming voice first thing in the morning was the last straw. I jumped out of bed, got dressed, and followed those two divas to go demand our payment from that guy Zhou.

But once we managed to slip onto their campus, we found out Zhou had already been taken in by the police—suspected in a murder case. And on top of that, it sounded like he’d completely lost it.

“Wu Xiaogang? Don’t you think we’re the unluckiest trio ever? How do we not make a dime on our very first job?!” Liang Jing said, head hanging.

I didn’t answer. I was too busy wondering whether Zhou was getting what he deserved, or if it was the ghost girl coming back for him.

Whatever. I shook my head. No matter how this ends, I know I did what I was supposed to do.
